The international community is urging the United States and Iran to exercise self-restraint following a pledge by Tehran to take revenge for the killing of a top military commander.

Funerals for Qassem Soleimani were held across Iran three days after he was killed in a US drone attack in Iraq.

In the Iranian capital, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei wept as he led huge crowds in mourning and prayers.

Soleimani's burial is scheduled for Tuesday in the southeastern province of Kerman, where he is from.

The three days of mourning which Khamenei declared after the killing were coming to an end.

Iranian media quoted Ali Akbar Velayati, a foreign policy adviser to the supreme leader, as saying Americans must leave the region.

He warned that if they don't, they will end up in a worse situation than in Vietnam.

On Sunday, multiple rockets landed near the US Embassy in Baghdad. American troops and other US embassies in the region are on heightened alert.

The International Atomic Energy Agency says it will continue verifying Iran's nuclear program, despite the country's latest announcement to back further away from the 2015 nuclear deal.

Iran said on Sunday that it will no longer abide by limitations on uranium enrichment contained in the deal with major powers. It says the move is a countermeasure to economic sanctions imposed on Tehran by the United States.

The IAEA released a statement on Monday. It says the agency's inspectors will continue to carry out verification and monitoring activities in Iran. It noted that the country says its cooperation with the agency will continue as before.

IAEA says it will keep its member states informed of any developments.

A United Nations cultural body has reacted sharply to US President Donald Trump's threat to attack Iran's cultural sites.

Trump tweeted on Saturday that the US has targeted 52 Iranian sites that it would strike if Iran retaliates for the death of one of its top generals. He added that some of the targets are at "a very high level and important to Iran and the Iranian culture."

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay met with the Iranian ambassador to UNESCO on Monday.

Azouley noted that both the US and Iran have ratified two conventions -- one designed to protect cultural assets during armed conflicts and the other to protect the world's cultural and natural heritage.

She stressed that the conventions ban any attack targeting cultural properties or world heritage sites.

Trump has been under fire even within the US over the threat. Some argue that doing so would be a breach of international law.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Sunday that any target the US strikes will be "a lawful target," and that "it will be a target designed at the singular mission of protecting and defending America."

Later in the day, Trump defended his threat, complaining that the US is not allowed to touch Iran's cultural sites while Iranians are allowed to kill American people. He said, "it doesn't work that way."

Iraq has called for US cooperation in removing foreign troops from the country.

Iraq's acting Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi made the call in a meeting with US ambassador to the country Matthew Tueller on Monday.

The meeting follows a resolution adopted by the Iraqi parliament on Sunday that calls for foreign troops, including those from the United States, to leave Iraq in the wake of the killing of a top Iranian military commander in the country.

The senior officer of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, General Qassem Soleimani, died in a US airstrike in the Iraqi capital Baghdad on Friday.

The Iraqi government reacted sharply, calling the US move a grave violation of the country's sovereignty. The US attack also killed a senior member of a Shia militant group in Iraq, fueling anger among the Iraqi people.

The Iraqi acting prime minister stressed the importance of mutual cooperation in the withdrawal of foreign troops in line with the resolution. According to the prime minister's office, he also pointed out how dangerous the current situation is and said that Iraq is doing everything it can to prevent the descent into open war.

Iran has repeatedly threatened retaliation against the US and demanded the withdrawal of US troops from Iraq and other countries in the region.

Iraq appears to be trying to avoid possible clashes between US and Iranian forces by urging the US to act quickly.

Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga has said the government will make every diplomatic effort to realize the extradition of former Nissan Motor chairman Carlos Ghosn.

Last week, Ghosn allegedly departed Japan illegally and entered Lebanon.

Suga said on a TV program on Monday that he was at a loss for words when he first heard about the incident and said it is extremely regrettable. He added he will make sure that the details of Ghosn's departure are ascertained, and measures are taken to prevent such incidents from happening again.

The Chief Cabinet Secretary explained that Japanese authorities have asked Interpol to put Ghosn on an international wanted list.

A US news channel has reported that former Nissan Motor chairman Carlos Ghosn said he has evidence proving that his arrest was a coup to take him down, and that he plans to name the people behind it.

Fox Business disclosed on Monday that one of its reporters interviewed Ghosn over the weekend, ahead of his news conference scheduled on Wednesday.

Ghosn reportedly said he plans to reveal the names of those responsible for his arrest. He said he believes they include some people behind the Japanese government.

The report quoted Ghosn as saying that he believes "they wanted to take him out" because he was going to merge Nissan and Renault.

It also said Ghosn secretly left Japan because he was upset as he failed to understand the unfairness of the Japanese judicial system, and he wasn't allowed to speak to his wife.

The operator of a nuclear power plant in central Japan will halt operations of two of its reactors due to a delay in the construction of mandatory anti-terror facilities.

The facilities for the No. 3 and No. 4 reactors at the Takahama plant in Fukui Prefecture must be completed in August and in October, respectively.

But Kansai Electric Power Company says it won't be able to complete them on time, and therefore decided to suspend their operations as soon as the deadlines arrive.

The No. 3 reactor has been offline since Monday as it undergoes regular inspections. It is scheduled to be put back online in early May. But the utility's decision means that it will go offline again three months later.

A similar problem is plaguing another nuclear power plant in southwestern Japan. Kyushu Electric Power Company plans to suspend operations of two reactors at its Sendai plant due to delayed anti-terror measures.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in has expressed willingness to improve bilateral ties with Japan, but said he will continue to demand that export controls be reviewed.

In a televised New Year's address on Tuesday, Moon spoke about his plans for the domestic economy and foreign policy.

He said that as Japan is South Korea's closest neighbor, he will promote bilateral relations in a more future-oriented way.

He added that if Japan retracts its export restrictions, relations could develop more quickly.

Moon also pointed out that talks between the US and North Korea are stalled, and said Seoul needs to improve relations with Pyongyang. He proposed joint enterprises near the demilitarized zone.

He said he is prepared to meet repeatedly with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and remain in constant dialogue with him.

Moon also called for exchange through sports and said they need to continue discussions to send a joint team to the Tokyo Olympic Games.

Japan's Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Hiroshi Kajiyama has stressed that any decisions on export controls will be made only after repeated policy dialogue with South Korea.

Kajiyama responded on Tuesday to a televised New Year's address by South Korean President Moon Jae-in during which Moon urged Japan to retract its export restrictions.

Kajiyama declined to comment on the future of Japan's export controls, but noted that the two countries have agreed to continue policy dialogue on the matter.

He said he believes that repeated talks and an item-by-item review will help break the deadlock.

He also expressed hope that the dialogue will promote bilateral cooperation on the nonproliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

US aerospace company SpaceX has launched dozens of mini satellites in a global high-speed internet project.

The company's Falcon 9 rocket lifted off from an Air Force base in Florida on Monday.

It deployed 60 satellites at an altitude of 290 kilometers as part of the Starlink project.

The satellites will move under their own power into orbit at an altitude of 550 kilometers to join 120 other satellites launched earlier.

SpaceX plans to start the broadband internet service once 1,500 satellites are in place.

Company founder and CEO Elon Musk plans to eventually have more than 10,000 satellites covering the entire globe.

Other firms have announced similar plans. They include US IT giant Amazon and US venture OneWeb. Japan's Softbank Group is an investor in OneWeb.

Commercial services using next-generation 5G networks will begin this year in Japan.

The country's three major mobile phone carriers -- NTT Docomo, KDDI and Softbank -- are scheduled to launch their services this spring. Rakuten hopes to begin a service in June.

The 5G are expected to play a major role in the entertainment industry, distributing content such as sports and music event videos.

The carriers are currently working with various firms to test ways to put the technology to practical use.

Possibilities include telemedicine using three-dimensional images, and the use of high-definition drones images for security at stadiums and other locations.
