NHK has learned that footage from multiple security cameras has given clues about how Carlos Ghosn fled Tokyo before boarding a private jet at an airport in western Japan.

The former Nissan Motor chairman arrived in Lebanon from Turkey on December 30. Ghosn had been out on bail and was banned from leaving Japan.

Investigative sources say Ghosn left his residence in Tokyo around 2:30 pm on December 29 and joined two men, believed to be American citizens, at a luxury hotel some 800 meters away.

The three boarded a Shinkansen bullet train from Shinagawa station in Tokyo, and arrived at Shin-Osaka station before 7:30 pm.

The three arrived at a high-end hotel near Kansai International Airport just after 8:00 pm. Two hours later, the two men who were accompanying Ghosn left the hotel lugging two large containers. No security cameras captured Ghosn.

After their arrival at the airport at around 10:30 pm, the two men boarded a private jet bound for Turkey. The plane took off around 11:10 pm.

Sources say the two containers, declared as music-related cases, did not undergo X-ray checks. Nor were they opened by customs officials.

Tokyo prosecutors and police say Ghosn likely hid inside one of the containers.

Japanese Justice Minister Masako Mori says that former Nissan Motor Chairman Carlos Ghosn's criticisms of the country's justice system do not justify his escape.

Mori spoke to reporters on Monday, a week after Ghosn announced his arrival in Lebanon. Ghosn had been out on bail and banned from leaving Japan.

Mori said the Justice Ministry has been working to confirm what really happened, but that the former Nissan chairman is believed to have used illegal methods to leave Japan. She called the move extremely regrettable.

Mori said criticisms against Japan's judicial system and Ghosn's illegal departure are separate issues.

She said that different countries have varying judicial systems, and that simple comparisons are not appropriate.

Mori said her ministry will use every available opportunity to increase the public's understanding of the Japanese system.

She also said the ministry will consider recent escape cases and suggestions from various fields as it does a swift and thorough review of the bail system. She suggested that GPS monitoring would be considered for people released on bail.

The funeral of a top Iranian military commander will be held in Tehran on Monday. Armed groups in the region say they will retaliate for his death in a US drone strike.

General Qassem Soleimani's coffin arrived in Iran on Sunday from Iraq. His convoy was attacked on Friday near Baghdad International Airport.

Memorial services are taking place across Iran. The coffin will be moved to the capital Tehran on Monday from the southwestern city of Ahvaz.

The Iranian government has declared Monday a national holiday and is calling on the public to attend the funeral.

Iran has said it will retaliate against the US for killing Soleimani. Armed groups in the region that are sympathetic to Iran are also vowing to take revenge.

In Lebanon, the leader of the Shia Muslim group Hezbollah, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, called for the need to retaliate in a televised speech on Sunday.

Nasrallah said the objective of the so-called Axis of Resistance is to drive out US troops from the entire region. He indicated that Hezbollah will work with Iran and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government.

On Sunday night, rocket attacks injured three people in a house near the US Embassy in Baghdad.

Some observers say the attacks were carried out by a local Shia Muslim militia with close ties to Iran. Concern is mounting that tensions could rise across the Middle East.

US President Donald Trump has warned Iran of "major retaliation" if Tehran were to respond to the killing of a top Iranian commander.

Trump spoke to reporters on Sunday on board the presidential plane as he returned to Washington from the southern state of Florida.

Iranian leaders have suggested that Tehran will retaliate against the killing of Qassem Soleimani in a US drone attack in Iraq last week.

The parliament of Iraq has also responded to the killing on the country's soil. It has approved a resolution calling for an end to the deployment in Iraq of foreign troops, including those from the United States.

Trump expressed his displeasure with the decision. He said if Iraq asks US troops to leave, Washington will impose sanctions against Baghdad like it has never seen before.

Iran says it will enrich uranium beyond the limits set by restrictions on the number of centrifuges and enrichment levels in its 2015 nuclear agreement with major powers.

Iran announced the decision in a statement on Sunday.

The statement does not mention any specific criteria for raising uranium enrichment. It says the country will maintain relations with the International Atomic Energy Agency as before.

The statement says Iran is ready to comply again with the nuclear agreement if the US lifts the sanctions.

This is the fifth time for Tehran to take phased countermeasures since the United States resumed sanctions on Iran.

The country insists the sanctions have prevented it from getting the economic benefits promised in the nuclear deal.

Analysts say while refraining from the risk of a collapse of the nuclear deal, Iran is trying to raise concern in an attempt to gain economic assistance from major powers in Europe and elsewhere.

Share prices in Tokyo opened sharply lower in the year's first trading session on Monday, with the key Nikkei index briefly falling more than 500 points from last year's close.

Sell orders surged just after the market opened amid growing tensions in the Middle East following the killing of a top Iranian general by a US drone attack in Iraq.

Market sources say risk-averse sentiment has spread among investors after stocks fell in overseas markets out of concern over the US-Iran tensions.

They say the yen's appreciation against the dollar also pushed share prices down. The dollar briefly fell below the 108-yen mark in Tokyo on Monday.

Investors are buying the yen, which they view as a relatively safe asset, due to intensifying tensions in the Middle East.

Crude oil futures hit a new seven-month high in Tokyo on Monday as the killing of a top Iranian general in a US airstrike heightened tensions in the Middle East.

Buy orders flooded the Tokyo Commodity Exchange just after the year's first trading started.

Key crude futures opened above 43,300 yen, or 400 dollars, per kiloliter. In December, they were trading between 38,000 yen and almost 43,000 yen.

Market sources say investors are worried about a possible drop in the supply of crude oil from Middle East oil-producing nations due to the tensions.

They say if the impact begins to be actually felt in the production and transport of oil in the region, the prices would rise further.

They say markets are closely watching to see how Iran will react.

Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe says he will urge all relevant parties to make diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East.

Abe held a New Year's news conference on Monday after visiting Ise Shrine in Mie Prefecture, central Japan.

He said he is deeply concerned about rising tensions in the Middle East, and said he would call on all parties involved to make diplomatic efforts to keep the situation from escalating further.

He touched on Iranian President Hassan Rouhani's visit to Japan last month and said Tokyo will continue to engage in tenacious diplomacy to help stabilize the Middle East.

Abe added that Japan relies on the Middle East for most of its energy sources. He said Japan will send the Self-Defense Forces to the region to collect information to ensure that ships with links to Japan can safely navigate waters in the region.

A Japanese lawmaker has said his office received more than 9,000 dollars from a Chinese company that was seeking to enter Japan's integrated resort business.

Mikio Shimoji of Nippon Ishin Japan Innovation Party held a news conference in Okinawa Prefecture on Monday. He also said he plans to pay back the money when preparations are made.

Another Lower House member, Tsukasa Akimoto, has been arrested on suspicion of receiving more than 27,000 dollars in bribes from the Chinese firm, 500.com, in September 2017.

A former adviser to the company told investigators that the firm also provided more than 9,000 dollars to each of five Lower House members in addition to Akimoto.

Shimoji, who is among the five in question, told reporters that his staff received the money in October 2017 from Masahiko Konno, a former adviser for the company, as a campaign fund.

Shimoji said the staff intended to issue a receipt to Konno but he refused it. The lawmaker explained that his office failed to record the acceptance in the political funds report because the receipt was not created.

He said he deeply regrets that transparency in campaign funds was not maintained.

Shimoji served as a vice chair of a lawmakers' group promoting integrated resorts.

He also said he met with Konno and others three times between February and August in 2017, and that he has never granted the firm any favors.

Japan Post Holdings is marking the New Year with a new president, who promises to put the scandal-hit financial group back on track.

Hiroya Masuda became president on Monday. His predecessor resigned after it was revealed that firms in the group were using improper methods to sell insurance.

In his New Year's address, Masuda told executives the group is facing its biggest crisis since launching in 2007.

He called for redress as soon as possible for the customers who have suffered, and he vowed to take steps to ensure the problem doesn't happen again.

He said he would rebuild trust one step at a time.

Regulators have ordered Japan Post Insurance and Japan Post to suspend sales of insurance products for three months. Japan's Financial Services Agency found that the firms were giving false information to customers and double-charging premiums.
