Taiwan's incumbent President Tsai Ing-wen is now headed into a second term after soundly defeating her main rival in Saturday's presidential election.

In a news conference, Tsai said the results have a special significance. She said they show that Taiwan's people will shout their determination even more loudly when their sovereignty and democracy are threatened.

Tsai said; "I want to once again call upon the Beijing authorities to remind them that peace, parity, democracy and dialogue are the keys to cross-strait interaction and long-term stable development. These four words are also the only path to bringing together and benefitting both our two peoples."

The Central Election Commission said Tsai had a record more than 8 million votes. That compared with Nationalist Party candidate Han Kuo-yu, who had 5.5 million.

Han said earlier he couldn't win as his efforts came up short.

"I call on President Tsai to work hard for the next 4 years, so that the people of Taiwan can live happily," Han said.

Taiwan's relationship with China became a deciding factor in the election. Tsai capitalized on the Hong Kong protests, calling Beijing's "One Country, Two Systems" principle a failure.

Han also criticized this principle, but campaigned on promises to improve relations with China.

The Nationalists said Tsai's tendency to lean toward independence would isolate the territory from the international community.

But that failed to resonate with a population worried about Beijing's growing influence.

The organization of the Chinese government in charge of Taiwan affairs has reacted to results of the presidential election in Taiwan, which Beijing considers a renegade province.

China's Taiwan Affairs Office issued a statement on Saturday night.

The office said, without mentioning the historic victory of incumbent President Tsai Ing-wen with a record number of votes, that the Chinese government adheres to the basic policy of peaceful reunification, "One Country, Two Systems", and the One China principle.

The office stressed that the government resolutely opposes any separatist schemes and acts for the independence of Taiwan.

It said the government is willing to work with its compatriots in Taiwan to promote the peaceful development of cross-strait relations and advance the peaceful reunification of the homeland.

It also said the government wants to jointly create a bright prospect for the great resurgence of the Chinese people based on a shared belief in the One China principle and opposition to Taiwan's independence.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has released a statement congratulating Tsai Ing-wen on her reelection. He said that Taiwan had once again demonstrated the strength of its robust democratic system. In an apparent attempt to highlight differences with China, which doesn't have direct elections for top leaders, Pompeo said the US and Taiwan are "members of the same community of democracies" and share "political, economic, and international values."

He also said the US applauds Tsai's commitment "in the face of unrelenting pressure," in an apparent reference to Beijing. Pompeo went on to say that the US hopes Taiwan, under Tsai's leadership, will "continue to serve as a shining example for countries that strive for democracy."

The British and US governments are criticizing Iran for briefly detaining London's ambassador to Tehran during an anti-government protest in the Iranian capital on Saturday.

British media say Ambassador Rob Macaire was attending a memorial to remember those who died in the crash of a Ukrainian airliner on Wednesday. The event turned into a protest against the government, and the ambassador was detained on suspicion of being involved.

British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab said in a statement, "The arrest of our ambassador in Tehran without grounds or explanation is a flagrant violation of international law."

The statement also says, "The Iranian government is at a cross-roads moment; it can continue its march towards pariah status with the political and economic isolation that entails or take steps to de-escalate tensions and engage in a diplomatic path forwards."

US State Department Spokesperson Morgan Ortagus criticized Iran in a tweet for what she called its violation of the Vienna Convention. She demanded that Iran respect the rights of diplomats and formally apologize to the British government.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Russian President Vladimir Putin have agreed to work together to bring stability to the Middle East amid increased hostility between the United States and Iran.

Merkel and Putin met in Moscow on Saturday.

At a joint news conference after their talks, Merkel welcomed Iran's acknowledgement that it accidentally shot down a Ukrainian passenger jet. She said it is good that those responsible have been identified. Merkel called for a thorough investigation, saying "everything has to be done to find a solution."

Putin urged both the US and Iran to avoid major military actions, which he said would be a catastrophe not only for the Middle East, but for the entire world.

The two leaders also reaffirmed they will continue their efforts to keep the Iranian nuclear deal alive. Washington unilaterally walked out of it in 2018.

On the ongoing civil war in Libya, Merkel announced her intention to host peace talks in Berlin. Putin strongly supported the idea and called it timely.

Thousands of demonstrators in Thailand have joined a run to protest against the government of Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-o-cha.

Organizers say about 10,000 people took part in the protest jog in a Bangkok park on Sunday.

Thailand shifted from military rule to a civilian government last year. Many young people are critical of Prayuth, who led the 2014 military coup.

Some demonstrators shouted, "Prayuth, go away," while running the 2.5-kilometer course. Others wore T-shirts with a cartoon of the prime minister.

After the 2014 coup, Thais were barred from holding political rallies involving five people or more. They are currently required to give notice before organizing such gatherings.

The student activists who organized the run say they wanted to provide an opportunity for people to demand the government stop its abuse of power and restore freedom and personal rights.

The participants included the leader of the Future Forward party, which seeks to end military influence on politics. Thailand's Election Commission has petitioned the Constitutional Court to dissolve the party. Future Forward's leader, Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit, said Prayuth must step down to restore democracy.

Supporters of the prime minister held a walking event in another park in the Thai capital on Sunday.

Two American soldiers have been killed in southern Afghanistan by a roadside bomb. Taliban insurgents have claimed responsibility for the attack.

The blast hit a vehicle carrying US military personnel in the southern province of Kandahar on Saturday.

Local media are reporting two others were wounded and are being treated at a hospital.

The incident follows bomb attacks by the Taliban last month, including one near Bagram Airfield on the outskirts of the capital, Kabul.

In September last year, US President Donald Trump announced a halt to peace negotiations with the Taliban after a US solider was killed in a terrorist attack.

The peace talks later resumed, but the resurgence of Taliban attacks has raised concerns about future negotiations.

Young men and women in northeastern Japan have talked about their hopes for rebuilding towns that were devastated by the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

Many local governments in those areas held Coming of Age ceremonies on Sunday, one day before the national holiday to celebrate the occasion.

About 180 people who are turning 20 this year took part in a ceremony in Shichigahama in Miyagi Prefecture. They were elementary school students when the disaster struck the town, killing more than 70 people.

Kenta Aoki and Mako Endo gave a speech on behalf of the new adults. They said they will never forget the date of the disaster -- March 11, 2011.

They said they will always cherish their lives because they survived the disaster. They added that they want to make use of their experiences and to return the kindness they received from the people of the town and their supporters.

Some of the new adults had to live in makeshift housing after the disaster. Others took classes in a prefab building when they were at junior high school.

One woman said some people around her age died in the tragedy and she remembered them during the ceremony.
