Chinese lawmakers have begun discussing new national security legislation targeting Hong Kong. That comes after the country's congress approved the plans last month, prompting renewed protests in the city territory.

The draft legislation lays out four criminal acts which Beijing says are a threat. Those are secession, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign or external forces. The nation's legislative committee tabled the law during a meeting this week, but details have not yet been made public.

The legislation is expected to enable mainland authorities to set up agencies in Hong Kong. Pro-democracy forces have denounced the law, while Chinese Premier Li Keqiang says it will help maintain the 'one country, two systems' framework.

People in Japan are out and about on the first weekend since authorities lifted cross-country travel restrictions.
The change is proving a boon for tourist sites which are welcoming back big numbers for the first time in months.

The coronavirus crisis may be far from over, but that's not stopping shoppers and people watcher's from heading to Takeshita Street in Tokyo's Harajuku district.

A woman from Kanagawa Prefecture says, "I'm worried about the virus, but I'm also concerned about the economy. That's why I decided to go out today."

Dozens of people gathered at a bus terminal to make a day trip to nearby prefectures for rafting and fruit picking.

Cabin attendant Oyama Miyoko says, "To be honest, I'm delighted. We thought people would still be reluctant to go out, but we actually got a lot of reservations."

The operator says it carefully sanitizes and ventilates the buses, and maintains strict distancing between customers.

The World Health Organization has warned that the coronavirus pandemic is accelerating, after reporting a single-day record of more than 150,000 new cases.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Friday that the world is "in a new and dangerous phase."

Tedros said almost half of the new cases came from the Americas, with large numbers also being reported in South Asia and the Middle East.

He called on "all countries and all people to exercise extreme vigilance." He urged people to take precautions, such as maintaining physical distancing rules and wearing face masks.

Infection numbers have been surging in the states of the US that reopened their economies early. Media reports say Florida and South Carolina reported their biggest one-day infection counts on Friday.

Brazil confirmed more than 50,000 new cases on Friday, pushing the total above 1 million. Brazil's President Jair Bolsonaro has been encouraging businesses there to reopen.

US media say tech giant Apple will temporarily close stores in states where the number of coronavirus cases has recently spiked.

Media reports say that, from Saturday, the company will shut 11 stores across Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina and Arizona.

Apple resumed operations at those stores after the states began to reopen their economies in around May. It reportedly plans to get the stores back up and running as soon as the situation allows.

Apple's decision hit stock prices in New York, as investors feared that a resurgence in the number of virus cases may affect the economy.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average opened higher on Friday, but ended more than 200 points lower than the previous day's close.

The Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force has confirmed that a foreign submarine navigated an area just outside Japan's territorial waters without surfacing this week. Defense officials say they believe the submarine belongs to the Chinese Navy.

Defense Ministry officials say MSDF destroyers and patrol planes first spotted the submarine on Thursday afternoon in the contiguous zone northeast of Amami-Oshima Island in Japan's southwestern prefecture of Kagoshima. They say it was moving west and that the MSDF kept it under observation.

The officials say the submarine left the zone by Saturday morning, moving west through the East China Sea. They say the submarine did not enter Japan's territorial waters.

Japanese Defense Minister Kono Taro on Saturday instructed Defense Ministry officials and the Self-Defense Forces to do their utmost to gather information and carry out surveillance and warning activities.

Under international law, a submarine is supposed to surface and raise its national flag when it navigates through foreign territorial waters. But the rule does not apply to contiguous zones.

Japanese defense officials say the submarine navigated from the Pacific into the East China Sea through a narrow channel between Amami-Oshima Island and the Tokara Islands. They say the latest move is unusual and are analyzing the purpose of the excursion.

This is the first time in about two years that a foreign sub has been detected in Japan's contiguous zone.

In January 2018, a Chinese nuclear-powered submarine was spotted in Japan's contiguous zone off Miyako Island as well as the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea.

Japan controls the Senkaku Islands. The Japanese government maintains the islands are an inherent part of Japan's territory. China and Taiwan claim them.

The UN nuclear watchdog's board of governors adopted a resolution Friday calling on Iran to give inspectors access to two facilities where the country is suspected of storing undeclared nuclear material.

The International Atomic Energy Agency resolution was proposed by Britain, France and Germany. It was rejected by Russia and China.

US Ambassador Jackie Wolcott said, "This matter has entered a new phase and the Board has made clear Iran must comply."

Iran's representative Kazem Gharibabadi protested the move. He said the resolution is a trap set by the United States and Israel, which are trying to pressure the agency with unfounded accusations.

The resolution is non-binding, but is expected to increase the pressure on Iran.
