The Tokyo metropolitan government has further eased restrictions on businesses as the daily number of new coronavirus cases has fallen from its peak.

Tokyo initiated step 2 in its coronavirus recovery road map on Monday. That allows cram schools, theaters, gyms and retail shops -- including department stores -- to reopen.

Five new cases were confirmed in Japan's capital on Sunday. It was the first time in six days that the number of new cases was below 10.

The metropolitan government plans to relax restrictions in phases at two-week intervals, while evaluating the extent of the infection. It may move to the next step earlier than planned if the number of infections remains low.
Officials also plan to issue a "Tokyo alert" to urge people to exercise vigilance if there is a resurgence in cases.

They are watching the situation closely before deciding to move to step 3, which includes reopening karaoke parlors and bars.

New coronavirus cases have been confirmed among children at a local elementary school in the southwestern Japanese city of Kita-kyushu.

City officials confirmed 12 new cases on Sunday, including four at the Moritsune Elementary School in the city's Kokura-minami district.

A classmate of the four was found to be infected with the coronavirus last Thursday.

Three other elementary and junior high schools in the city have been temporarily closed after some students tested positive for the virus.

The city's educational board asked elementary and junior high schools on Sunday to thoroughly check temperatures and health conditions of students.
A city official said that as anyone can be infected, children who have contracted the virus should be protected from possible discrimination and bullying.

The number of coronavirus cases in Kita-kyushu rose to 97 over the past nine days. Of those, the infection routes are not traceable in 34 cases.

Fukuoka Prefectural Governor Ogawa Hiroshi asked the health minister on Saturday to send antigen test kits for the coronavirus on a priority basis. They will be supplied to local hospitals in Kitakyushu.

Japan's government is asking people to continue taking preventative measures against the coronavirus after a renewed surge in cases in the southwestern city of Kitakyushu.

Officials there confirmed 12 new infections on Sunday, bringing the total number of coronavirus cases to 97 over the past nine days.

Economic Revitalization Minister Nishimura Yasutoshi, who is in charge of the coronavirus response, told reporters on Sunday that the government is not considering re-declaring a state of emergency as infection routes have been identified.

But he said a sense of crisis remains as the number of infections has risen significantly.

Government officials say there is also the risk of a resurgence of cases in other areas. They are urging people to continue taking preventative measures, such as maintaining social distancing and wearing masks when resuming social and business activities.

Even if infections occur, the government plans to contain them by enhancing the testing system to quickly detect those who have been infected. It also plans to identify those who have had close contact with infected people.

The government says that from Monday it will not ask people to refrain from traveling across prefectural borders, except for Tokyo and its surrounding three prefectures, as well as Hokkaido.

But officials are calling on people in Fukuoka Prefecture and nearby Yamaguchi Prefecture to be cautious about traveling to Kitakyushu.

Countries in Southeast and South Asia are easing restrictions imposed to contain the coronavirus pandemic. Some countries will resume economic activities while infections are still on the rise.

India is easing its stay-at-home order on Monday, which has been in place since late March. Restrictions will also be lifted on retail and manufacturing sector operations.

India's government stressed it will further reopen business activity, after measures to deal with the pandemic caused mass unemployment and seriously affected the country's economy.

However, coronavirus infections have yet to decline in India, with the number of new cases exceeding 8,000 per day.

The Indian government will keep its stay-at-home order in place and will not resume subway operations in areas with a high number of infections.

The Philippines is easing strict travel restrictions in the capital Manila and its surrounding areas and resume operation of public transportation.

But in the Philippines, the rate of increase in the number of infections has yet to drop even after two-and-a-half months of lockdown.

The government seeks to accelerate resuming economic activities in a cautious manner. It will continue to limit the number of passengers using public transportation to half the full capacity or less, and will impose age limits for outings.

Thailand is further easing restrictions in phases on Monday, by allowing movie theaters and other indoor facilities to reopen along with massage parlors.

The Thai government has extended its state of emergency so it can impose restrictions if there is a resurgence of infections.

The Islamic State militant group has attacked a minibus in Afghanistan's capital of Kabul, killing two employees of a local commercial TV station.

The Afghan government says that the vehicle carrying 15 employees of Khurshid TV was attacked by a roadside bombing in Kabul on Saturday. Two of the workers, including a reporter, were killed and six others were wounded.

The militant group took responsibility for the bombing in a statement.

They said that the attack targeted a bus carrying employees of the TV station which they described as loyal to the Afghan government.

The chief executive at the TV station, Mohammad Rafi Sediqi, told Afghan media that a terror attack against free speech and expression should never be tolerated, and that the attack should never be forgotten.

The militants have carried out terror attacks in Kabul and the eastern city of Jalalabad since the United States and the Taliban signed a peace agreement in February. Jalalabad was once the group's stronghold.

In the US city of Minneapolis, increasingly violent protests over the death of an unarmed black man in police custody have continued for a third night.

On Friday, many people threw rocks at police officers, who responded by using tear gas and rubber bullets.

The police say some people looted supermarkets.

A police station was set ablaze, prompting Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey to order an evacuation. Thick smoke could still be seen billowing from the building in the morning.

Frey requested the National Guard to help control the crowds. Authorities say more than 500 soldiers were deployed across the area.

On Friday, the Minnesota State patrol arrested a CNN television crew, including a black reporter who was reporting live on air. He could be seen showing his ID, but was handcuffed and led away.

They were all released after being confirmed as members of the media.

CNN protested, saying the arrests were a clear violation of their rights. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz apologized to the news outlet, and said he takes full responsibility.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump called the protestors thugs in a tweet on Friday. He also warned that "when the looting starts, the shooting starts."

George Floyd died on Monday in Minneapolis after a white police officer kneeled into his neck for several minutes, despite him saying he couldn't breathe.

A video of the incident prompted thousands of people to take to the streets to protest racial discrimination and excessive use of force by the police.

On Thursday, Governor Walz declared an emergency as the situation turned violent.

US National Guard troops were deployed in more than 10 states as protests erupted nationwide over the death of a black man in police custody.

The New York Times reports that demonstrations were held in at least 75 cities in recent days.

The protests follow the death of George Floyd, who died after being pinned down by police officers in Minneapolis on Monday.

In Los Angeles, retail shops have been looted.

Protesters in Washington DC clashed with police near the White House, prompting officers to fire warning shots.

In New York, demonstrators gathered in well-known places such as Times Square.

City officials say 33 police officers have been injured, and at least 47 police vehicles have been damaged or destroyed. New York police have detained more than 300 people.

At least 25 cities have imposed curfews. Media reports say the last time such restrictions were imposed in this many cities was in 1968 following the assassination of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

Some observers say the situation in Minneapolis may have stoked public discontent nationwide at a time when many people were already disgruntled by the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, including high unemployment as businesses were forced to close.

US streaming giant Netflix has posted this Twitter message: "To be silent is to be complicit. Black lives matter. We have a platform, and we have a duty to our Black members, employees, creators and talent to speak up."

Twitter has changed its official account's profile picture's color from blue to black. It also added the hashtag "#BlackLivesMatter".

Meanwhile the hashtag "#ICantBreathe," the phrase the man used while pleading to a police officer as he was pinned down to the ground, has been tweeted by many users.
Since the video capturing this scene was posted online, it has become a popular catchphrase nationwide for those protesting the killing.

A US spacecraft with two NASA astronauts on board has successfully docked with the International Space Station.

The Crew Dragon, developed by US firm SpaceX, docked shortly after 14:00 UTC on Sunday -- about 19 hours after launching from Florida.

It's the first private, manned spacecraft to reach the ISS.
The US mission is also the first in nine years to use a domestically built rocket ship, following the retirement of the space shuttle fleet.

This journey is the final test for the Crew Dragon.
NASA said if it's a success, it will carry out the first launch of the Crew Dragon in the operational phase on August 30. Japanese astronaut Noguchi Soichi will be among the crew.
