North Korea has announced it will deploy military units to two areas near the border with the South. The announcement came one day after the North blew up an inter-Korean liaison office in the city of Kaesong.

North Korea's state-run media aired video of the demolition on Wednesday. It came with a warning that the destruction was only a first step, and the next step will be decided based on how Seoul responds.

State media also said the North's military will be mobilized near the border. The units will be deployed to two areas where inter-Korean joint projects are located---the Mount Kumgang tourist area and the Kaesong industrial zone.

The North also unveiled plans for exercises to be conducted near the military demarcation line.

One of South Korea's top military officials has expressed deep concern over Pyongyang's announcement and has warned against further provocations.

South Korean Army Joint Chief of Staff Director of Operation Jeon Dong-jin said, "the North will surely pay if these measures are put in place."

Meanwhile, South Korea's Unification Minister has offered to resign over worsening ties.

The North's state media also reported that Seoul proposed dispatching its director of national security as a special envoy. But it said leader Kim Jong Un's younger sister, Kim Yo Jong, turned down the offer.

The South Korean Presidential Office said the proposal had been confidential, and Pyongyang showed a lack of common sense by leaking it and intentionally distorted the purpose.

The United States is backing South Korea and closely monitoring a recent North Korean provocation.

A senior administration official told NHK on Tuesday the US is aware that North Korea destroyed the liaison office in Kaesong and remains in close coordination with its South Korean allies.

A State Department spokesperson also told the media that the United States fully supports South Korea's efforts on inter-Korean relations and urges the North to refrain from further counterproductive actions.

The Trump administration continues seeking to resume a dialogue with Pyongyang aiming at its complete denuclearization.

Meanwhile, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will visit Hawaii from Tuesday along with Deputy Secretary of State Stephen Biegun.

No details are known, but US media outlets are quoting government officials as saying that Pompeo will meet a senior Chinese official, possibly to exchange views on the North.

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order on police reform amid nationwide protests against police brutality and racism.

Calls for police reform have been growing in the United States after George Floyd, an African American, died in police custody in Minneapolis last month.

Trump said in a speech at the White House on Tuesday that Americans want law and order. He dismissed calls to defund and dismantle police departments.

The executive order forbids chokeholds except when the use of deadly force is allowed by law.

The order also includes the creation of a database to coordinate the sharing of information on officer misconduct.

It also encourages the involvement of social workers, who will cooperate with officers to respond to certain nonviolent calls, including drug addiction.

Observers say Trump is trying to demonstrate that his administration is taking measures to improve the situation as it faces pressure for change following a series of incidents of police brutality.

But some critics are casting doubt on the effectiveness of the order, saying more drastic reforms, including cuts in police budgets, are necessary.

A survey of Hong Kong residents found that more than 80 percent of young people see themselves as Hongkongers rather than Chinese.

Hong Kong Public Opinion Research Institute surveyed the territory's residents aged 18 or older on how they view their identity, and received answers from 1,002 people. The poll was taken during the first four days of June, right after the Chinese government decided to introduce national security legislation in Hong Kong.

The survey asked respondents to choose from four identities, Hongkongers, Chinese, Hongkongers in China, or Chinese in Hong Kong.

Fifty-point-four percent of respondents identified themselves as Hongkongers. The figure was 81.1 percent for those aged 18 to 29.

Just 12.6 percent, and only 3.7 percent of young people, identified themselves as Chinese.

The results show the growing self-awareness as Hongkongers among young people amid fears that the mainland will tighten controls through the new legislation.

An expert told local media that the survey shows that the Chinese government's attempt to force national awareness on Hong Kong people isn't working well.

Authorities in the Chinese capital Beijing are stepping up measures against the coronavirus after more than 100 new cases have been reported since last week.

Beijing raised its alert level to the second highest degree on Tuesday.

Health officials say 106 symptomatic cases have been confirmed in the capital since last Thursday. Some of the cases have been linked to a large food wholesale market in the city.

Officials took steps to gradually get life in the city back to normal after lowering the emergency response level on June 6.

Officials say elementary and junior high schools that had reopened will be shut again from Wednesday, with students taking classes online.

Municipal authorities have closed the market, and are testing about 200,000 people who have visited it since May 30.

They have also tightly restricted the movements of people and vehicles in residential areas where infections have been confirmed.
