Weather officials are forecasting localized torrential rainfall in western and eastern Japan through early Friday, and are warning of mudslides and flooding.
The Meteorological Agency says a front stretching along the Honshu region and warm humid air are making atmospheric conditions unstable over a wide area of western and eastern Japan.
Some areas in the Kyushu region are experiencing downpours as rain clouds develop. Nagasaki City got 31 millimeters of rain in one hour early Thursday morning.
More than 50 millimeters of rain per hour may fall in some areas in western and eastern Japan as the unstable atmospheric conditions are expected to continue through early Friday.
During the 24-hour period through Friday morning, up to 300 millimeters of rain is expected in the Kansai region, 250 millimeters in northern Kyushu and Shikoku, and 200 millimeters in southern Kyushu and Tokai.
Up to 150 millimeters of rain is also expected in the Kanto-Koshinetsu region, and 120 millimeters in Chugoku and Hokuriku.
The agency is warning of mudslides, flooding in low-lying areas and swollen rivers, as well as lightning strikes and gusty winds.
Residents are urged to check hazard maps and prepare to evacuate.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government is expected to lift its alert for the spread of the coronavirus unless there is a surge in infections on Thursday.
The government issued a "Tokyo alert" on June 2, citing signs of increased infections.
The situation has improved in the past several days. Newly confirmed cases in Japan's capital stood at 18 on Wednesday, a fourth straight day for the figure to be below 20.
This means that two of the three indicators for lifting the alert have cleared their threshold.
Tokyo officials will also take into account views of experts in lifting the alert. The officials are considering the timing of the lifting.
They are also considering advancing the easing of restrictions from step two to three.
Step three allows restaurants to open until midnight, and karaoke parlors can resume business.

A Japanese pharmaceutical company is expected to continue clinical trials of the anti-flu drug Avigan, a candidate to treat COVID-19 patients, as the tests lag behind the original schedule.
The government had aimed to approve the drug in May by speeding up the process.
The firm had planned to carry out clinical trials on 96 patients in Japan from March to the end of June. But it says the trials are proceeding slowly mainly because the number of people infected with the coronavirus has declined.
Separately, clinical studies on Avigan are being conducted at institutes including Fujita Health University in Aichi Prefecture.
The researchers there say they cannot determine the drug's effectiveness on COVID-19 at this point and plan to finish the studies by the end of August.
Meanwhile, animal experiments have indicated the possibility of side effects on fetuses. But no other serious adverse reactions have been reported from more than 3,000 people who were administered the drug through observational studies by medical doctors.
The health ministry plans to proceed with approval procedures after confirming the efficacy of the drug through clinical trials and research.

A brother of George Floyd, a black man who died after being pinned down by a white police officer, has called for law enforcement reforms in testimony to Congress.
The younger brother, Philonise Floyd, spoke before the House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday.
He said, "Maybe by speaking with you today, I can make sure that his death would not be in vain."
The brother mentioned that George was held by police on suspicion of using a fake 20 dollar bill.
Philonise said that George did not deserve to die over 20 dollars. He said, "I am asking you, is that what a black man is worth?"
The case triggered protests across the country, as well as calls for police reforms. It has emerged as an issue in the campaign for the presidential election in November.
Floyd said, "I'm tired of pain." He said, "George called for help and he was ignored."
He asked Congress to listen to calls by his family and "the calls ringing out in the streets across the world."
Floyd called for changes that make law enforcement the solution -- not the problem.
He referred to the situation that led to his brother's death, saying, "Anybody with a heart, they know it's wrong. You don't do that to a human being. You don't even do that to an animal."
Floyd said in tears, "I wish I can get him back."

The top diplomats of Japan and France have confirmed that the foreign ministers of the Group of Seven industrialized nations will issue a joint statement on Hong Kong at an early date.
Japanese Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu and French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian spoke by phone on Wednesday. They discussed China's decision to introduce national security legislation in Hong Kong aimed at cracking down on anti-government protesters.
They shared serious concern about the decision and agreed on close cooperation through various frameworks, including the G7.
Japanese government sources say Motegi and Le Drian confirmed that the G7 foreign ministers will issue a joint statement expressing concern and calling on China to maintain the "one country, two systems" for Hong Kong.
Japan has worked to urge other G7 countries for the statement, as some members, including France, had reportedly been cautious about it.
