The Japanese government will suspend the entry of all foreigners in principle, starting on Thursday, as the coronavirus keeps spreading around the world.

The government had continued to allow businesspeople to enter Japan from 10 Asian countries, including China and South Korea, plus Taiwan, after variants of the virus, which are believed to be highly transmissible, were detected in some countries.

But the government decided on the full suspension as the virus is surging in Japan. The measure will continue as long as the declaration of a state of emergency is effective. The declaration covering some prefectures is to remain in place until February 7.

Japanese citizens can return to Japan. Foreigners with resident status are allowed to reenter the country, and foreigners with special reasons, such as a relative's funeral or childbirth, are also admitted.

Those people are required to pledge to stay at home or at accommodation facilities for 14 days and to preserve their location information. If they violate the rule, the government will consider disclosing their names and revoking the resident status of those with that status.

The South Korean government says it will release more than 900 prisoners on parole on Thursday as a measure to curb coronavirus infections.

The Justice Ministry said the move is to ease overcrowding at correctional facilities across the country.

The ministry said criteria for early release will be relaxed for people with high infection risks, including the elderly and those with underlying conditions, as well as model prisoners.

It said prisoners convicted of sex crimes, child abuse and drunk driving will not be included.

This announcement comes after a mass infection at a detention center in Seoul. City officials say the number of related infections had surpassed 1,160 by Wednesday since the first case was found in late November.

China's government has strongly denied allegations by Britain that forced labor and other human rights violations are being committed against Uighur Muslims in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

British Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab announced a plan on Tuesday to tighten rules to rid the supply chain of products linked to the forced labor of Uighur Muslims in China. He cited evidence of human rights violations committed against Uighurs.

Commenting on the matter on Wednesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said forced labor is a lie fabricated by Western countries, and stressed that it does not exist.

Zhao said Britain should immediately withdraw its mistaken decision and stop interfering in China's internal affairs. He added that China will take all necessary measures to protect its national interests and dignity.

Raab said British firms will be required to check their supply chains and report the results. He said suppliers found to be profiting from forced labor will be barred from government procurement.

An opinion poll conducted by NHK earlier this month shows only 16 percent favor holding the postponed Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics as scheduled. This contrasts sharply with the close to 80 percent who say the Games should be canceled or postponed again.

NHK carried out the survey over the weekend by telephoning people aged 18 and older chosen at random. A total of 1,278 people, or 59 percent of those contacted, provided responses.

On the Tokyo Games, which are set to take place this summer after being postponed by a year, 16 percent said the events should be held as scheduled, down 11 percentage points from the previous month. A total of 38 percent said they should be canceled and 39 percent said they should be further postponed, up about 7 percentage points in both cases.

Combined, that means that 77 percent said the Games should be canceled or further postponed.

India is getting ready to begin a nationwide vaccination drive this weekend against the coronavirus.

Indian Health Ministry officials say the country is fully prepared for the massive undertaking. Airlines began transporting more than 5.6 million doses of the vaccine on Tuesday.

The first round of the shots are being delivered to distribution centers around the country. The AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine for local use is manufactured at an institute in the western city of Pune.

Officials say about 30 million health and other frontline workers will be given priority. They'll be followed by around 270 million people older than 50 and other people at risk.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the move as a "landmark step" in India's fight against the virus.
The country's drugs regulator recently approved emergency use of the AstraZeneca vaccine and another one developed by local firm Bharat Biotech.

Ahead of the campaign, India conducted two dry runs to ascertain the best way to administer the vaccines and detect any logistical loopholes in their distribution.
More than 10 million people in India have been infected with the virus. Only the United States has more cases.

The Asian Development Bank will offer financial help to developing nations in the Asia-Pacific region as they look to vaccinate their people against COVID-19.

ADB President Asakawa Masatsugu said on Tuesday that systems for vaccine transportation and management need huge investment. He said support will come through a 9-billion-dollar vaccine initiative the bank launched late last year.

Meanwhile, the ADB said it had offered nearly 10 billion dollars in emergency financial aid by December to countries such as Indonesia and the Philippines, where the virus continues to spread.

Recipients also included Thailand and the Maldives, where the pandemic has hit tourism hard.

Asakawa said the ADB will come up with new measures as necessary to encourage stable economic growth in the region.

A Japanese research group says it has successfully developed the world's first digital signal-processing method that can help create lower-cost and smaller devices for quantum cryptography communication.

Experts say quantum cryptography is theoretically unbreakable. They say it will be necessary as conventional encryption standards could be easily broken with quantum computers that have a much higher level of performance than that of supercomputers.

The current quantum cryptography technology in practical use utilizes photons to carry signals. Photons are microscopic particles of light. Sending photons to carry signals requires expensive apparatus that can keep the environment for the technology at freezing temperatures.

A University of Tokyo research team developed a communication method that does not rely on photons. The method processes signals using a special mathematical function to allow them to pass through optical fiber. It says the technology is as secure as the currently used one.

Koashi Masato, a professor at the University of Tokyo and a member of the research group, says the new method will make it possible to develop a lower-cost and smaller device for quantum cryptography.

The research was published in the Wednesday issue of the British science journal, Nature Communications.
