Chinese media outlets are reporting that Alibaba Group founder Jack Ma has made his first public appearance in almost 3 months. He had not been seen since publicly criticizing Chinese financial regulators last year.
The Communist Party-affiliated Global Times and other outlets said on Wednesday that Ma had attended an online event organized by his charity.
A video clip shows him speaking about education. He does not address his absence or mention his whereabouts.
The tech billionaire raised eyebrows in October when he suggested in a speech that China's financial regulations were "outdated." He had not been seen since.
The following month, the government halted the planned stock market debut of Alibaba's financial arm Ant Group.
Beijing then launched an anti-monopoly investigation into the company in December.
These moves had pushed Alibaba's shares down. But prices surged more than 10 percent on Wednesday following the news of Ma's reappearance.

The Chinese government has issued a directive requiring residents to undergo PCR testing before heading for their homes during the Lunar New Year holidays.
The government has taken steps to prevent the spread of the virus as next month's holiday season has raised fears of a major wave of infections, with more than 1.7 billion holidaymakers expected to travel within the country.
Specifically, the government has called on residents to refrain from nonessential travel and gatherings.
Residents returning to their hometowns are requested to undergo PCR tests before their journey. They also will have to report their health conditions to local authorities for 14 days after returning to their domiciles.
The announcement comes as Chinese health authorities say the number of new cases of the coronavirus has topped 100 for eight days in a row in all of China as of Tuesday.
Beijing on Wednesday confirmed its first case of the virus variant earlier found in Britain, prompting local authorities to call on more than 24,000 residents to stay at home.

People in many parts of Japan have reported seeing what appeared to be a fireball flashing through the sky on Wednesday night.
Eyewitness reports were posted on social media about the phenomenon that was observed shortly after 8:30 p.m. in regions including Kanto, Tokai and Kinki.
A video taken by an NHK camera in the western prefecture of Osaka shows a ball of light streaking across the sky for several seconds at around that time.
Fujii Daichi, a curator who specializes in astronomy at the Hiratsuka City Museum, near Tokyo, said he believes it was a fragment of an asteroid that burned up in the Earth's atmosphere.
Footage taken by Fujii shows the fireball appearing in the northern sky and becoming brighter as it falls.
A camera that he installed in Fuji City, Shizuoka Prefecture, also captured images of the fireball.
Fujii says the fireball appeared to be traveling at a relatively slow speed compared to a regular meteor, but it was as bright as the moon.
