Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono says Japan will contribute to building peace in Syria.
Speaking at an Upper House committee meeting on Thursday, Kono said the issue of a suspected chemical weapons attack in Syria cannot be resolved through military strikes. He said a solution should be pursued through a political process.
Japan has been calling on all parties involved in the conflict in Syria to cease military action and engage in a peace building process led by the United Nations.
Kono expressed hope that Japan will play a part in establishing peace in Syria.
He said he will explain Japan's stance at an international conference on humanitarian aid to Syria, scheduled for late April in Brussels.
Following the suspected chemical weapons attack, US President Donald Trump hinted at possible military action.

Meanwhile, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis stressed that the United States has yet to complete its analysis of the suspected chemical weapons attack by Syrian forces on an opposition stronghold last week.
He said, "we're still assessing the intelligence, ourselves and our allies."
When questioned about the possible use of force against the Syrian government, Mattis replied the US stands "ready to provide military options if they're appropriate as the president determined."

The World Health Organization has announced that some 500 patients in Syria have been treated for symptoms of gas poisoning.
The WHO on Wednesday demanded immediate access to the site of an alleged chemical attack in Syria's opposition stronghold of eastern Ghouta, near Damascus.
The organization cited reports from its health partners at hospitals in the affected district, and announced an estimated 500 patients exhibited symptoms consistent with exposure to toxic chemicals.
It maintains 43 people sheltering in basements reportedly died in the suspected chemical attack on Saturday. They developed symptoms that included respiratory failure and disruption to the central nervous system.
A senior official for emergency preparedness and response said the international community should be outraged at the horrific reports and images from Ghouta.
He said WHO demands immediate, unhindered access to the area to provide care to those affected.
The suspected use of chemical weapons by the government of President Bashar al-Assad has prompted The Hague-based Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons to announce on Tuesday that it will send a fact-finding mission to the country shortly.

North Korea's parliament has approved a state budget and a reshuffle, but unveiled no new foreign policy ahead of planned summits with South Korea and the United States.
The ruling Workers' Party newspaper Rodong Sinmun on Thursday devoted 5 pages to the annual session of the Supreme People's Assembly in Pyongyang on Wednesday.
Members of the North Korean leadership who attended the session included Choe Ryong Hae, vice chairman of the Korean Workers' Party and a close aide to leader Kim Jong Un. Kim Yong Nam, the 90-year-old president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly, was also in attendance. Kim Jong Un appears to have skipped the meeting.
The assembly picked 4 new members for the State Affairs Commission. They include Kim Jong Gak, chief of the General Political Bureau of the Korean People's Army.
Another new member of the State Affairs Commission is Park Kwang Ho, head of the ruling party's propaganda and agitation department. He accompanied Kim Jong Un to Beijing last month.
The North Korean leader referred to the upcoming summit with South Korea and dialogue with the US at a meeting of the ruling party's political bureau on Monday.
However, no new diplomatic policy was announced at Wednesday's parliament session.

Geological experts say Wednesday's deadly landslide in southwestern Japan was likely caused by weathering of the slope's bedrock.
The massive landslide buried 4 houses at the foot of the slope in Nakatsu City, Oita Prefecture.
At the land ministry's request, a team of researchers from a Kyushu University graduate school inspected the site later in the day.
The researchers found that the bedrock on the upper-most part of the slope has turned into whitish sand, due to weathering.
The team says on top of a relatively solid layer of andesite is a softer layer of ignimbrite near the top of the slope. The upper layer is a pyroclastic flow deposit caused by a volcanic eruption between 900,000 and 1,000,000 years ago.
The team says the slope collapsed because the weathering of the bedrock extended more than 10 meters below the surface.
Dozens of boulders measuring 2 to 3 meters in diameter remain on the slope. Experts warn that rain or other conditions may cause the rocks to fall or trigger another landslide.
One of the researchers, Professor Noriyuki Yasufuku, says extra caution is needed to ensure the safety of the rescue workers.

Japan is facing a serious labor shortage with a shrinking working population. The government has come up with a plan to address the problem by allowing certain non-Japanese to come and work in the country.
There are currently 2 main statuses for non-Japanese workers. One is for people employed in 18 professional categories, including professors, doctors and lawyers.
The other is for people who take part in a technical intern program.
The newly proposed status would allow foreigners with certain skills to work in the country for up to 5 years. Those who have completed internships would be eligible on the condition they do not bring their families to Japan.
The government would require companies employing these workers to draw up support plans that help them settle in and arrange accommodation. Businesses would be asked to submit reports to the Justice Ministry.
The government adds it is also considering allowing those status-holders to stay in the country indefinitely if they pass stipulated exams during their 5-year stay.
The government plans to include the proposal in this year's basic policy in economic and fiscal management and reform.
