An opposition party legislator is calling for former Defense Minister Tomomi Inada to be summoned as a witness to the Diet about the recently discovered Ground Self-Defense Force records.

The Party of Hope's Lower House Diet affairs chief, Kenta Izumi, spoke to reporters on Tuesday. He called the situation outrageous and said a climate that supported cover-ups cannot be allowed.

The daily activity logs of the GSDF during their mission in Iraq emerged after the ministry repeatedly denied their existence.

Izumi said, what Inada was told, and the orders she gave when the defense ministry was asked to provide the documents, needs to be clarified.

Meanwhile, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told reporters that the ministry is working to prevent recurrences.

He said he hopes thorough efforts will be made to follow new guidelines on government documents under Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera's leadership.

When asked who he thinks should be held accountable, Suga said the problem should first be addressed within the ministry.

An aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin says US President Donald Trump proposed a summit at the White House during a phone call last month.

Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov revealed this on Monday.

He said the proposal was made when Trump called Putin on March 20th to congratulate him on his election victory.

Ushakov said it's now difficult to discuss the possibility of holding a summit, as bilateral relations worsened after the poisoning of a former Russian spy in England.

But he described a summit meeting as important for the international community, and stressed that it's necessary for both countries to work toward the resumption of talks to set up a summit.
An NHK reporter says that Putin will likely continue to seek talks with Trump in order to prevent bilateral ties from deteriorating further.

The administration of US President Donald Trump has urged China to correct what it calls the country's unfair trade practices.

White House Deputy Press Secretary Lindsay Walters issued a statement on Monday. She criticized China's retaliatory moves against US import duties on steel and aluminum that took effect in March.

Beijing responded by imposing steep tariffs on American imports, including pork, on Monday.

Walters said, "China's subsidization and continued overcapacity is the root cause of the steel crises."

She said, "Instead of targeting fairly traded US exports, China needs to stop its unfair trading practices."

She said Chinese actions "are harming US national security and distorting global markets."

White House trade advisor Peter Navarro spoke to a US media outlet. He said he doesn't believe the 2 countries will escalate their exchanges.

Beijing is strongly against Washington's decision to slap stiff tariffs on a wide range of Chinese imports. The duties are based on US dissatisfaction over Chinese policies that it says violate US intellectual property rights.

Attention is on whether the 2 sides will make progress in bilateral negotiations to avoid worsening trade friction.

US forces in Japan say 5 Air Force CV-22 Osprey aircraft will arrive at Yokota Air Base in suburban Tokyo later this week.

They announced on Tuesday that the Ospreys will remain at the air base after taking part in exercises around the region.

Their formal deployment to Yokota happens this summer after personnel transfers over the next several months.

The USAF will assign 10 Osprey aircraft and about 450 personnel to Yokota in stages in the coming few years.

They initially planned to bring the Ospreys to Yokota after October 2019, but the schedule was moved up due to security concerns in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Osprey deployment at Yokota will be the first at a US base in Japan outside Okinawa.

Their presence is expected to enhance the US military's readiness toward North Korea and China.

But residents around Yokota Air Base are likely to oppose the deployment due to concerns over the safety of the tilt-rotor aircraft.

Ospreys have been involved in a series of accidents, including a crash off Australia last year that left 3 people dead.

A Japanese government-backed fund will sell part of its stake in Renesas Electronics, giving the leading chipmaker more business options amid intensifying global competition in the semiconductor industry.

The fund, Innovation Network Corporation of Japan, became the ailing company's top shareholder 5 years ago as part of a corporate rescue effort.

The fund announced on Tuesday that it would unload nearly 12 percent of the company's shares on the market, signaling that Renesas is back on track.

This will leave the fund holding a little more than 33 percent of Renesas shares, down from its current 45.6 percent. That's still enough to retain veto rights on crucial proposals, but gives more leeway to the chipmaker.
Mergers and acquisitions are increasing in the global semiconductor industry as makers look to gain an upper hand in new markets such as self-driving technologies.

Microchips for cars are Renesas' main product. The company plans to expand its global operations with acquisitions and tie-ups.

A Tokyo-based cryptocurrency exchange apparently attacked by hackers may see sweeping changes in its management.

Sources say Coincheck is holding buyout talks with a major online brokerage. The exchange is making final arrangements to sell a majority of its shares to the Monex Group.

The move comes after Coincheck lost more than 500 million dollars' worth of a virtual currency in a suspected hacker theft. Officials have apparently decided that the firm needs a management shake-up to win back the trust of customers.

Japanese children have linked up with Norishige Kanai on the International Space Station for a question and answer session.

About 450 children gathered in a city near Tokyo on Monday night for the livestream chat with the Japanese astronaut.

A large screen showed Kanai floating on board the ISS. He is there on a 6-month mission.

The kids asked Kanai how being in a gravity-free environment is affecting his body. He said that because his blood is not being pulled by gravity, his face feels a bit puffed up.

Asked how Earth looks from space, Kanai said the same as in photos. But he noted that it feels rather wondrous to see the planet from the window every day.

After speaking with the children for about 20 minutes, Kanai said he hopes to tell them more about his experience in person when he returns. Then he performed a somersault to demonstrate zero-gravity.

One girl who joined the talk said it was fun to learn about space.
