Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has vowed to ask for US help in resolving the abductions of Japanese nationals by North Korea when he meets President Donald Trump later this month.

Abe said on Monday that he hopes to visit Florida from April 17th to the 20th. He said he wants to have in-depth talks for 2 days with Trump on topics that are important for both countries, including their policies on North Korea.

Abe said he would ask Trump to take up the abduction issue at the expected US-North Korean summit. Calling the matter a top priority, he pledged to do his utmost to resolve it through cooperation with the US and South Korea.

Abe also said that past experience shows there is no use in having talks merely for the sake of talks.

He stressed the need to keep applying maximum pressure on the North until it takes verifiable and irreversible steps to completely abandon its nuclear and missile programs.

The Japanese government has fixed the schedule for next year's Group of 20 summit in Osaka and chosen the sites for related ministerial meetings in Japan.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga announced on Monday that the 2-day G20 summit will open next year in Osaka on the 28th of June.

It will be the first G20 summit held in Japan.

The government selected 8 municipalities for the G20 ministerial meetings.

To take a look at the municipalities from the north to the southwest; the town of Kucchan in Hokkaido will be the site for a meeting of tourism ministers; Tsukuba City in Ibaraki Prefecture will host a meeting of trade and digital economy ministers; Niigata City will host a meeting of agriculture ministers; and the town of Karuizawa in Nagano Prefecture will be the site of a meeting of ministers in charge of the global environment and energy conversion for sustainable growth.

The foreign ministers will meet in Aichi Prefecture; the health ministers in Okayama City; the labor and employment ministers in Matsuyama City, and the finance ministers and central bank governors in Fukuoka City.

The government says it will negotiate with the municipalities to fix the dates of the ministerial meetings.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has praised a performance by South Korean musicians in Pyongyang.

A South Korean troupe presented a concert called "Spring Comes" on Sunday. The group includes veteran pop singer Cho Yong-pil and a member of the idol group Girls' Generation.

North Korea's ruling party newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, gave the event prominent coverage on the front page of its Monday edition.

The paper says Kim attended the concert with his wife, Ri Sol Ju, and his younger sister, Kim Yo Jong. It carries a picture of him with the South Korean musicians.

The paper says Kim told them that despite his busy political schedule in early April, he chose to come to Sunday's concert no matter how late he might arrive. It says Kim expressed his thanks to the musicians.

The paper also reports that Kim said he was moved to see the North Korean audience respond enthusiastically to the South Korean pop stars.

South Korean reporters say Kim proposed holding the next one in Seoul under the title "Autumn Comes" this fall. The South Korean group will give a joint performance Tuesday with North Korean musicians.

The two Koreas will have a historic summit between Kim and President Moon Jae-in on April 27th.

North Korean media have carried a photo of the country's leader Kim Jong Un speaking to a South Korean girls' pop group known as "Red Velvet" after a concert in Pyongyang.

Rodong Sinmun, the official newspaper of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea, posted the photo, which was taken after the performance of a South Korean musical troupe on Sunday.

South Korean media accompanying the troupe quoted Kim as saying that people were highly interested in whether he would come to see the performance.

North Korea bans its people from access to South Korean popular culture, including music and movies.

The newspaper said in a commentary on Sunday that capitalist art propagates a decadent lifestyle and is a tool for corrupting people.

Kim is believed to be trying to show that he is committed to improving relations with the South.

The members of Red Velvet said the audience in Pyongyang was more responsive than they had imagined.

A senior North Korean official has apologized to South Korean reporters for restricting access to the concert given by a South Korean musical troupe in Pyongyang on Sunday.

On Monday, Kim Yong Chol, a vice chairman of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea, visited the hotel where the media team was staying.

Of the 8 members of the team, only one cameraman was allowed to enter the concert venue.

Kim told them that the performance was special because the country's leader Kim Jong Un was in attendance. He added that there was insufficient coordination between the leader's security guards and the concert organizers.
The vice chairman said it was wrong to restrict the media activities.
Kim Yong Chol, who is in charge of inter-Korean relations, led a high-level delegation to the South in February.

He is obviously aware of the criticism aimed at him by conservatives in the South because of his alleged involvement in the sinking of a South Korean naval vessel and the shelling of a South Korean island in 2010.

When he appeared before the reporters, he introduced himself as "the purported main culprit behind the sinking of the vessel."

Japan is placing more regulations on high-frequency trading, or HFT. Many brokerages use this system which is capable of executing massive buy and sell orders at extremely high speeds.

HFT is becoming more common in markets around the world. It helps boost transaction volumes and market activity, but is often blamed for excess volatility in stock prices.

A legal revision that took effect on April 1st requires HFT operators trading in Japan to register with the authorities.

They also have to take steps to prevent systems failures and introduce safeguards against the execution of erroneous orders.

Transaction records must be kept for a certain period of time, and operators face penalties if problems occur.

Around 70 firms in Japan currently use high-frequency trading. They include domestic and foreign brokerages as well as hedge funds.

Authorities in Europe and the US are also moving toward stricter HFT regulation.

Japan's Finance Ministry has welcomed new employees amid a document-tampering scandal over a controversial land deal.

22 new career employees attended a ceremony at the ministry's headquarters in central Tokyo on Monday -- the first business day of fiscal 2018.

This comes after the ministry admitted to altering documents related to the sale of a state-owned plot of land to a school operator at a price well below its appraised value.

Deputy Vice Minister Koji Yano handed a letter of appointment to each new recruit.

On behalf of all the recruits, Akane Nakamura pledged to be aware of the responsibility she will bear as she works for the interests of all the people of the country as a public servant. She noted that she will carry out her duties in a fair and impartial way.

After the ceremony, a new employee said the scandal was very shocking and regrettable. He said he takes the issue seriously and will sincerely try to carry out his duties to prevent a recurrence.

Another said she does not see the scandal as someone else's business. She says she wants to fulfill her responsibility to win the people's trust.

The Finance Ministry has been conducting an in-house investigation to determine how the documents were tampered with. But it remains unknown who gave the order to do so.

In a separate ceremony, the National Tax Agency welcomed 13 new career employees on Monday.

The agency's deputy head, Takeshi Fujii, called on the new recruits to gain the strong work ethic needed for government employees.

Fujii reportedly did not talk about last month's resignation of then agency head, Nobuhisa Sagawa.

Sagawa used to head the Finance Ministry's bureau in charge of state property. He gave sworn testimony at the Diet last week. He is suspected of having played a role in the document-tampering.

Japan's Major League Baseball newcomer Shohei Ohtani has won his pitching debut for the Los Angeles Angels. The two-way star took to the mound just 3 days after he was designated hitter in the season opener.

Ohtani made a good start against the Oakland Athletics with four straight outs.

His team led 2-0 in the second inning. But it was short-lived. Ohtani allowed a three-run homer from Athletics' Matt Chapman.

But the 23-year-old shut out 3 batters in the 3rd.
He pitched for 6 innings and led the Angels to a 7-to-4 win.

Ohtani is the first major leaguer since Babe Ruth in 1919 to start as a hitter on opening day then start as a pitcher during the first 10 games of a season.

Ohtani said, "I really enjoyed pitching today. I felt excited like it was the first time I was playing baseball when I stepped onto the mound."
