Japan's Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera says the Air Self-Defense Force has found some of the records of its operations in Iraq.

Onodera told reporters on Friday that he was notified by the chief of staff of the Air Self-Defense Force earlier in the day that the daily logs of the ASDF's operations in Iraq between 2003 and 2009 were stored in a section of the Air Staff Office.

The 3 pages that have reportedly been found are said to cover 3 days of activities.

Onodera said his ministry is continuing the search for the logs as part of its effort to prevent a recurrence of the mishandling of the records of the SDF's operations in South Sudan.

He said the latest find was made during a search for documents requested by lawmakers.

The Defense Minister repeated his apology for the delay in reporting the discovery of the SDF activity records for Iraq after the ministry denied their existence in February last year.

He vowed to continue the investigation.

The US Ambassador to the United Nations says President Donald Trump will seek the complete denuclearization of North Korea when he holds the first summit with that country's leader Kim Jong Un sometime before the end of May.

Nikki Haley was speaking in a lecture on US diplomacy at Duke University in North Carolina on Thursday.

She said North Korea is now suffocating, adding that strengthened international sanctions led by the Trump administration have worked in getting North Korea to sit down for a dialogue.

She stressed, however, that sanctions won't be eased only because the North comes to the talks.

She said the United States is going into the summit very cautiously.

Haley said the conversation between Trump and Kim has to be about denuclearizing, not just some of it but all of it. She added that the US does not want an irresponsible actor to have any sort of nuclear weapons. She said if Kim does not choose his country's complete denuclearization, then the US will deal with it accordingly.

Haley also noted that the US's tough stance in holding Iran accountable for its actions sends a powerful message not only to Iran, but also North Korea.

Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono says any resumption of the six-party talks on North Korea's nuclear program should be cautiously studied.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Kono referred to media reports that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had told Chinese President Xi Jinping during last week's meeting in Beijing that he agreed to return to the denuclearization talks.

Kono expressed the hope that the international community will adopt the best possible course of action while watching the outcome of a summit between the 2 Koreas and an expected meeting between the US and North Korean leaders.

The Japanese Foreign Minister said North Korea has yet to make any official announcement on the six-party talks.

He added that a resumption of the talks should be discussed only after the North's clear commitment to denuclearize is confirmed at those summits.

A South Korean court has sentenced former president Park Geun-hye to 24 years in prison over corruption allegations that forced her out of power.

The Seoul Central District Court found her guilty of 16 of the 18 counts of bribery, abuse of power and coercion. It ordered a fine of about 16.8 million dollars.

Prosecutors had sought a 30-year sentence. They said Park conspired with longtime confidante Choi Soon-sil to receive or secure promises of bribes worth about 55 million dollars from Samsung, Lotte and other conglomerates.

The court acknowledged that Park took bribes from the conglomerates and she also demanded payments to foundations closely associated with Choi.

But the court said most of Samsung's payments did not constitute bribes. It said Park was unaware that the money was in return for helping Samsung complete a merger of group firms that was needed for a smooth leadership succession.

The court said in its ruling that Park abused her presidential status and the power entrusted in her by the people, and has shown no signs of repentance.

Park has consistently claimed her innocence. She did not attend Friday's session, which was televised live. She has been boycotting the court hearings since last October to protest the proceedings.

The corruption scandal triggered months of mass protests and political turmoil in South Korea.

Park was dismissed in March last year when the Constitutional Court upheld her impeachment. She was indicted the following month.

Park's defense lawyers say they will decide whether to appeal the ruling after confirming her intentions.

US President Donald Trump has instructed the US Trade Representative to consider additional tariffs on 100 billion dollars' worth of Chinese goods.

The Trump administration announced earlier this week that it would levy a 25 percent tariff on 50 billion dollars' worth of them.

China immediately announced that it was preparing countermeasures on a similar scale.

The White House released Trump's statement on Thursday.

It says rather than remedy its misconduct, China has chosen to harm American farmers and manufacturers.

But the statement also indicated that the US would continue negotiations with China.

China's state-run Xinhua news agency reported the US move as a breaking news story, with a comment saying the practice is a serious violation of international trade rules.

A government body has given up trying to arbitrate between Tokyo Electric Power Company and more than 15,000 people seeking higher monthly compensation for the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster.

It was the largest arbitration case involving the nuclear accident.

Namie Town in Fukushima Prefecture filed a petition with the Nuclear Damage Compensation Dispute Resolution Center in 2013, on behalf of residents who were forced to evacuate after the disaster.

More than 15,000, or about 70 percent of the town's population, signed the petition to demand more compensation from TEPCO, the operator of the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

TEPCO's monthly payment for each Namie resident was calculated at 100,000 yen, or about 934 dollars.
In March 2014, the dispute resolution center offered an arbitration plan that called for raising this amount by 50 percent. The town agreed to accept it.

But TEPCO maintains that increasing the compensation would have a significant impact on other evacuees. The center has repeatedly asked the utility to accept the plan.

On Friday, the dispute resolution center told the town of its decision to end the arbitration process.

The claimants are expected to consider whether to file a lawsuit against TEPCO. The town says more than 800 of the claimants are now dead.

Fans of Japanese animation and manga comics have been heading to "Comic-Con" in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

The festival of comic books, costumes and celebrities, one of the largest of its kind in the Middle East, kicked off on Thursday.

Many fans have dressed up as anime characters.

Japan's pavilion is selling goods related to Hatsune Miku, a so-called "virtual idol." A bookstore is selling English editions of Japanese comic books.

Fans have the chance to snap up goods based on their favorite characters.
Also taking part in the event is a Saudi Arabian production company, which is involved in a joint entertainment venture with Japan.

The firm invited producers of a Japanese movie that has been a hit in the Middle East, and organized a gathering of fans.

A female attendee says Japanese comics and games have triggered an interest in learning about Japanese culture and language. She hopes that this will grow.

People dressed as samurai warriors will parade in Paris in October as part of an exposition to promote Japanese culture.

The French capital is hosting the event for Japonismes 2018.

The parade is the highlight of an annual festival in Yamanashi Prefecture, central Japan. The participants re-enact the battle preparations of a 16th-century warlord, Takeda Shingen.

Officials from the prefecture say that most of the 40 people taking part will be French.

They plan to ask a French celebrity to play the role of Takeda.
