Officials in Gunma Prefecture have confirmed the deaths of all 9 people on board a helicopter that crashed on a mountain north of Tokyo.

The helicopter came down Friday near the border with Nagano Prefecture.

Authorities confirmed the deaths of 2 members before Saturday noon, after confirming the deaths of 7 others on Friday and Saturday morning.

Police are working to identify the victims.

Gunma officials say GPS records show the aircraft made a sudden turn at 9:58 AM on Friday, and that data was lost 3 minutes later.

Officials from the transport ministry's safety board are visiting the crash site to investigate the cause.

The helicopter was on its way to inspect a new climbing trail on the mountain.

Officials from Japan and the United States have failed to narrow their differences in 2 days of trade talks. They agreed to meet again in September.

Japan's Economic Revitalization Minister Toshimitsu Motegi and US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer wrapped up their meeting in Washington on Friday.

It was their first round of negotiations on what both countries are calling "free, fair and reciprocal" trade.

The US side indicated its desire to proceed with bilateral negotiations, with the aim of concluding a free trade agreement.

Japanese officials said they favor multilateral frameworks, such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
US President Donald Trump pulled out of the TPP soon after taking office.

Japanese officials are afraid that bilateral talks could lead to tough US demands to open up Japan's auto and agricultural markets as a way of narrowing the US trade deficit.

After the meeting, Motegi told reporters that talks are just beginning, and that no decision has been made on any specific issues.

He said Japan and the US will decide how to deal with various challenges as they study steps to promote trade.

The 2 sides confirmed they have differences in their basic positions, and agreed to explore ways to facilitate bilateral trade when they meet again next month.

North Korea has criticized UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for making "reckless remarks" about the country.

The North's mission to the United Nations issued a statement on Friday.

Guterres has said that North Korea can be a "normal member" of the international community through total denuclearization that is verifiable and irreversible.

He made the statement during a joint news conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo on Wednesday.

He also pledged his full involvement as UN chief in UN Security Council resolutions that include sanctions against the North.

The mission criticized Guterres' remarks for coming at a time when the world supports and welcomes the historic North Korea-US summit and joint statement in Singapore.

The mission is calling on Guterres to do something beneficial for peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula instead of siding with sanctions that only please some countries.

The North's mission has repeatedly condemned UN Security Council resolutions in the past. But it is rare for the mission to criticize the UN chief by name.

Red Cross officials are appealing for urgent international aid to North Korea which faces a serious food shortage due to a heat wave and lack of rain.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said on Friday that North Korea has had no rain since early July, with temperatures averaging 39 degrees Celsius across the country.

They warn that any threat to food security will have a serious effect on its already vulnerable population.

The federation says the lives of children aged 5 and under, as well as the elderly, are especially at risk from the heat and serious malnutrition.

More than 10 million people in North Korea -- or 40 percent of its population -- are said to be malnourished. The United Nations announced plans last month to extend humanitarian assistance.

The Red Cross says it has deployed emergency response teams and water pumps to irrigate fields in the hardest-hit areas. It says support must be provided to prevent the situation from becoming a full-blown crisis.

Japanese police carried out a climbing safety campaign on Mount Fuji on Mountain Day on Saturday.

August 11th is one of Japan's national holidays. Many climbers gathered on the 5th station of the country's highest mountain, the starting point of the climb to the peak.

Police officers handed out fliers urging climbers to wear a helmet and the correct climbing clothes and to submit a trekking itinerary to police.

The officers also recommended that climbers walk in a group so that no one gets left behind.

Mount Fuji straddles Yamanashi and Shizuoka prefectures in central Japan.

Police say 2 accidents have been reported on the Yamanashi side since July 1st. In one of them, a 70-year-old man died.

A senior Yamanashi police officer said he wants climbers to cooperate with each other to ensure safe and enjoyable climbing.
