Foreign ministers of ASEAN members and other countries have exchanged opinions on North Korea's denuclearization at the ASEAN Regional Forum in Singapore.
Japan's Foreign Minister Taro Kono, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and North Korea's Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho joined the meeting that was held on Saturday.
Pompeo and Ri shook hands and exchanged words with a smile before the meeting started. The US Ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim, formerly a special envoy on North Korean affairs, was seen handing an envelope to Ri.
Pompeo later tweeted that the envelope held US President Donald Trump's reply to a letter from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
The proposed denuclearization of North Korea was the main topic of the meeting.
With no progress being observed in the North's denuclearization, the United States is wary of international pressure being eased, and is believed to have called on other countries to continue to implement sanctions.
Japan has the same stance, while the ASEAN countries expressed in a joint communique their support for achieving the complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
North Korea's foreign ministry, on the other hand, quoted Ri as saying there will be no case whereby the North will unilaterally move forward first, as long as the US does not show in practice a strong will to address its concerns.
He was apparently reiterating the North's stance that it will not unilaterally denuclearize unless progress is made towards declaring a formal end to the Korean War and easing economic sanctions.
China and Russia support the idea of considering easing sanctions.
The focus is on what will be said about the North's denuclearization in the Chairman's Statement that is expected to be issued following the meeting.

Japan's foreign minister has called on other Asian countries to continue to fully implement sanctions on North Korea in accordance with the UN Security Council resolutions.
Foreign ministers of the 10 ASEAN members and other countries, including Japan, China, the United States and Russia, exchanged opinions on regional issues on Saturday on the sidelines of ASEAN-related meetings in Singapore.
Foreign Minister Taro Kono said Japan wants to work closely with other countries to achieve the complete, verifiable and irreversible abolition of weapons of mass destruction on the Korean Peninsula.
He asked for their cooperation in implementing measures to prevent the North's evasion of sanctions and to resolve the issue of Japanese nationals abducted by North Korea.
Kono also said Japan strongly opposes unilateral changes to the status quo in the South China Sea, where China is stepping up maritime activity, and called on relevant countries to create rules to prevent conflicts.
Prior to the meeting, Kono met his Chinese, South Korean and ASEAN counterparts.
He told them Japan would like to achieve a swift conclusion of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, or RCEP, which is a free trade deal between 16 Asia-Pacific countries.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said he urged Asian leaders to strictly enforce UN sanctions on North Korea.
He spoke at a news conference on Saturday in Singapore where officials from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations are meeting.
Pompeo said he stressed the need for diplomatic and economic pressure on North Korea to achieve the denuclearization the country has agreed to.
Pompeo said he had emphasized the same in a meeting the previous day with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
He said he had called on Beijing to continue to enforce UN Security Council resolutions. China has proposed easing sanctions against Pyongyang.
Citing reports about Russia granting new work permits to North Korean workers, Pompeo urged Russia to abide by the UN resolutions that ban such permits.
He said ending North Korea's nuclear program will take time, but he is optimistic it will be achieved.

A United Nations' panel of experts says North Korea is continuing with its nuclear and missile development programs in defiance of UN sanctions resolutions.
The UN Security Council panel monitors implementation of sanctions against North Korea and submitted a 6-month report on Friday.
Sources say the report states that a 5-megawatt reactor in Nyongbyon has been in almost continuous operation since December 2015.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un reportedly agreed to denuclearization in a summit with US President Donald Trump in June.
The report says the North is breaching the sanctions by offshore transfer of petroleum products using ships flagged to other countries.
It says a Russian tanker delivered petroleum to a Belize-flagged vessel, which later unloaded the goods at a port in North Korea. The transfer took place in April in the East China Sea.
The document adds that the North uses such methods to try and avoid surveillance.
The report says that from March to April, a North Korea vessel carried coal to waters off Vietnam. It was then transferred to smaller ships of unknown nationality.
Last August's UN Security Council resolution imposed a total ban on coal exports from North Korea.
The report also says Russia is involved in a construction business with North Korea. This violates a resolution prohibiting establishment of new joint ventures with the North.

A Russian media report says the country's air force has deployed fighter jets on a trial basis on one of the 4 Russian-held islands claimed by Japan.
Sakhalin Info reported on Friday that the fighters were sent to Yasniy Airport on Etorofu Island.
Russia's Defense Ministry has yet to formally comment, but the report says this is the first step toward full-scale deployment.
A photo obtained by NHK shows at least 3 parked Su-35s.
Yasniy Airport was opened 4 years ago as a civilian airfield. But the Russian government decided in January this year to allow both military and civilian aircraft to use the facility.
In March, Russian fighters landed there during a training exercise.
The deployment of fighter jets to the airport is seen as part of an attempt by Russia to increase its military capability on the 4 islands.
Russia considers those islands and another nearby island chain to be military strategic points facing the Pacific Ocean.
Russia controls the 4 islands. Japan claims them. The Japanese government maintains the islands are an inherent part of Japan's territory. It says the islands were illegally occupied after World War Two.

The whereabouts of a Chinese professor are still unknown after he was taken from his home by security authorities while being interviewed by a US government broadcaster.
Voice of America says retired Shandong University Professor Sun Wenguang was speaking by phone on Wednesday during a debate program when security officials stormed into his house.
In a recording published on the VOA website, Sun can be heard saying there are 7 or 8 officers in his home. He expressed his right to freedom of speech, but the line went dead.
Sun criticized the government of Chinese President Xi Jinping last month for huge expenditures on foreign aid and investment.
His criticism coincided with Xi's tour of the Middle East and Africa. Sun reportedly expressed similar views during Wednesday's interview.
VOA says it has not been able to reach Sun since then, and that sources say he is under house arrest in Shandong Province.
The incident comes as Chinese authorities are stepping up measures to suppress criticism of Xi's leadership.
