Nagoya City in central Japan saw the mercury hit 40.3 degrees Celsius -- the highest since record-keeping began, 128 years ago in 1890.
Mino City in Gifu Prefecture also recorded a daytime high of 40.3 degrees. Elsewhere, the highs reached 38.9 degrees in Kyoto City and 38 degrees in Fuchu City in suburban Tokyo.

Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has announced a relief package for the reconstruction of areas hit by torrential rain last month. About 110 billion yen, or some 950 million dollars, will be taken from a reserve fund in the fiscal 2018 budget.
Abe was speaking on Thursday at a meeting of the government's emergency task force on the rain-triggered disasters. Most of them were in western Japan.
The governors of Hiroshima, Okayama, and Ehime prefectures were present. Those prefectures were hit hard.
Okayama Governor Ryuta Ibaragi said the prefecture needs support from the government to overcome its current difficulties.
Abe said the relief package would help to cover the cost of removing mud and debris, and building temporary housing and public housing units for people forced from their homes.
The package also includes subsidies for farmers to help them plant new fruit trees.
Abe said the government will do everything in its power so that people affected by the disaster can rebuild their lives with hope and local governments will be able to proceed with reconstruction without having to worry about funding.
The use of the reserve fund is expected to be approved at a Cabinet meeting on Friday.

North Korea's Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho is in Singapore to attend the ASEAN Regional Forum.
On Friday, Ri arrived at an airport and entered his hotel without responding to reporters' questions.
He is expected to meet his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, and foreign ministers of other countries on the sidelines of the forum.
Ri will likely underscore the North's commitment to denuclearization. He will also try to justify his country's calls for a declaration to formally end the Korean War and loosen economic sanctions in talks with the United States.
The war is not technically over although an armistice in 1953 ended hostilities. Pyongyang believes that a declaration to end the war will help it win security guarantees from Washington.
Japan's Foreign Minister Taro Kono is also in Singapore and exploring an opportunity to meet Ri. Kono is hoping to convey Japan's position of seeking a comprehensive resolution of the North's nuclear and missile programs and its abductions of Japanese nationals.
However, North Korea has claimed in recent weeks via state-run media that the abduction issue has already been settled.

The British Navy's main amphibious assault ship HMS Albion has arrived in Tokyo for joint drills with Japan's Self-Defense Forces.
The Albion is on its first visit to Japan. It will take part in an amphibious landing exercise with the SDF.
The British Navy Captain who commands the ship, Tim Neild, said on Friday that the deployment shows the strength of the Royal Navy's commitment to the Asia-Pacific region.
Neild said the Albion has successfully cooperated with Japan to monitor the illegal offshore transfer of cargo to North Korean ships.
Japan and Britain have been promoting joint drills as part of their agreement last year to strengthen defense cooperation. The Albion is the 2nd British naval vessel to dock in Japan this year.
The series of moves appear to reflect an eagerness by Britain to monitor activities in the region, in particular those of China and North Korea.

Five senior US national security officials say Russia is conducting a campaign to interfere in the US midterm elections in November.
The officials held a news conference at the White House on Thursday.
Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats said Russia is behind the attempts to interfere in the upcoming US elections. He said Russians have tried to hack into and steal information from candidates and government officials.
FBI Director Christopher Wray said the intelligence agencies will work closely with US technology companies to stop any attempts to inject divisive misinformation into US social media.
National Security Advisor John Bolton said President Donald Trump has instructed the relevant agencies to take measures to protect the US system of representative government. He said the Trump administration will demonstrate leadership and determination to block interference from Russia and other countries.
The senior officials apparently hope to fend off criticism that President Trump is too soft on Russia.

Japan's Toyota Motor has announced that it will dissolve its capital tie-up with Isuzu Motors.
The 2 automakers formed the alliance in 2006 to develop small diesel engines for passenger cars.
But the 2008 financial crisis and changes in the market environment forced them to suspend some of their intended projects.
Toyota plans to sell off its nearly 6 percent stake in Isuzu.
The 2 automakers said in a statement, "As the automotive industry faces sweeping, once-in-a-century changes, Isuzu and Toyota intend to accelerate their efforts to improve competitiveness in the commercial and passenger vehicle markets, respectively."
Meanwhile, Toyota Motor announced on Friday that the company posted gains in both sales and profit.
Its group sales for the April-June quarter rose 4.5 percent from the same period last year to about 66 billion dollars.
Operating profit increased 18.9 percent to 6.1 billion dollars. Net profit rose 7.2 percent to 5.9 billion dollars.

Japan's Justice Ministry has decided that court records involving the Aum Shinrikyo cult should be held onto indefinitely as valuable reference materials.
The last of the 13 death-row inmates convicted for crimes committed by the cult were executed in July.
The ministry says in normal cases public prosecutors should preserve verdict documents for up to 100 years, while other records of criminal trials may be disposed of up to 50 years after a ruling is finalized.
But the ministry has decided to put no time limit on the Aum-related trial records, so that they may be studied and possibly used in future investigations.
Justice Minister Yoko Kamikawa told reporters on Friday that her ministry believes they can serve as important reference materials in criminal studies.
She said it's the ministry's duty to ensure that the records are preserved and handed down to future generations.

One of Japan's most popular summer festivals is underway in the northern city of Aomori.
The annual Aomori Nebuta Festival features huge paper lantern floats depicting legendary heroes and samurai warriors. It began on Thursday and runs until next Tuesday.
On the first night, 25 lantern floats were paraded along a 3-kilometer route in the city center. Some floats are 5 meters tall and 10 meters wide.
Dancers, called "haneto," wearing identical outfits jumped and shouted to the sound of flutes around the floats.
A large crowd of people from across Japan lined the streets to see the procession.
The 6-day festival is expected to attract 2.8 million people.
