89 South Koreans have crossed the military demarcation line into North Korea to reunite with family members they have not seen since the Korean War in the early 1950s.
North and South Korean leaders agreed in April to resume the family reunions after a suspension of about 3 years.
The South Koreans left the northeastern city of Sokcho in buses on Monday morning and crossed the demarcation line into the North.
They are scheduled to meet their relatives at the Mount Kumgang resort in the afternoon. They will return to the South on Wednesday.
A group of 83 North Koreans will also be reunited with relatives who live in the South from Friday through Sunday at the same resort.
South Korea's Unification Ministry says that as of July, about 56,000 people in the South were registered as separated family members.
More than 60 percent of them are aged 80 or older.

White House national security advisor John Bolton says North Korean leader Kim Jong Un indicated in April that his country will denuclearize within a year.
In an interview with ABC News on Sunday, Bolton referred to the outcome of the April summit between Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in, which he said was reported by Moon to US officials.
Moon was quoted as telling Kim during the summit that North Korea would be able to receive support and investment from countries, including Japan and South Korea, if it swiftly denuclearizes.
Bolton quoted Moon as telling Kim, "Let's get this done in a year." And Kim reportedly said, "Yes."
A joint statement issued after the US-North Korea summit in June does not refer to a deadline for the North's denuclearization. Subsequent negotiations on the matter have been deadlocked.
Observers say the US apparently is putting pressure on the North by revealing its earlier response.
Bolton also said Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is expected to visit North Korea soon.

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad says he hopes China can understand his country's internal fiscal problems and will help to resolve the situation.
Mahathir made the remarks at a news conference with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang after their meeting in Beijing on Monday.
It's an indication that Mahathir seeks understanding of his government's decision to suspend some of the infrastructure projects involving Chinese firms that are parts of China's Belt and Road initiative. Malaysian officials say the projects are too costly.
The projects were launched under Mahathir's predecessor, Najib Razak.
Since returning to power in May, Mahathir has reviewed all of Malaysia's public works projects involving foreign investment to try to reduce the country's debt. On July 5th, his government disclosed plans to suspend work on high-speed railway and pipeline projects.
The Chinese premier emphasized his country's willingness to deepen economic cooperation in a mutually beneficial manner with Malaysia.
While refraining to react directly to the plan to suspend projects, Chinese officials invited Mahathir to the head office of online retail giant Alibaba in Zhejiang Province ahead of his meeting with Li. The invitation is seen as an indication that China hopes to keep close economic ties with Malaysia.

Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen has visited the US space agency in Texas, becoming Taiwan's first sitting leader to enter an American government facility in the United States.
Tsai stopped over in Houston after wrapping up her Latin American tour. She visited NASA's Johnson Space Center on Sunday, where she was briefed on training facilities for astronauts.
Taiwanese media called the visit a new chapter in Taiwan's relations with the US. Taiwan and the US lack diplomatic ties.
Taiwan's media had unrestricted access in covering Tsai's visit. In the past, Taiwanese authorities prevented the media from reporting widely on presidential stopovers in the US, at Washington's request.
Tsai's visit to NASA and the easing of restrictions on Taiwanese media are believed to be part of President Donald Trump's policy to strengthen ties with Taiwan.
Trump signed the Taiwan Travel Act into law in March. It encourages mutual visits between high-level US and Taiwanese officials.
China has accused the Taiwanese president of not accepting the "one China principle." Tsai's visit is likely to enrage Beijing further.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has called for a ceasefire with Taliban insurgents to mark the Muslim Eid al-Adha holiday.
Ghani on Sunday called for a truce of about 3 months, starting on Monday.
The government previously announced a ceasefire with Taliban insurgents during the Eid al-Fitr holiday in June. The Taliban observed the 3-day truce, but resumed fighting immediately afterward.

The Taliban has yet to respond to Ghani's announcement.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has welcomed a call by Afghan President Ashraf Ghani for a ceasefire with Taliban insurgents.
In a statement released on Sunday, Pompeo said it is the hope of the United States and the international community that the Afghan people can celebrate the holiday of Eid al-Adha in peace, free from fear.
He added that the US remains ready to support, facilitate, and participate in direct negotiations between the Afghan government and the Taliban.

Authorities in Indonesia say at least 10 people have died in the latest major earthquake on the island of Lombok.
The US Geological Survey said the magnitude 6.9 quake hit the island late on Sunday.
Officials with Indonesia's national disaster agency said collapsed buildings in Lombok and neighboring Sumbawa island were the main cause of death.
Two more people died in the 6.3 magnitude jolt on Lombok earlier in the day.
Many buildings are already damaged from the series of tremors that ravaged Lombok earlier this month.
Telephone and other communications remain difficult.
Officials are still trying to determine the extent of the damage from the latest quake.
Lombok was first hit on August 5th by a 6.9 magnitude quake. Officials have confirmed 460 deaths so far, and more than 400 thousand people remain evacuated from their homes.

Japan's Foreign Minister Taro Kono says parties to a treaty regulating the trade of conventional arms should work together to encourage more countries to join it.
Kono was speaking at the opening session of a conference of states parties to the Arms Trade Treaty in Tokyo on Monday.
The treaty bans the export and import of tanks, guns and other conventional weapons that may be used to terrorize people or kill civilians.
Japan and other countries led efforts to adopt the treaty at the UN General Assembly in 2013. The treaty went into force the following year.
97 countries and regions have joined the treaty. But they do not include major arms exporters, such as the United States, Russia and China.
Kono said the illicit trade of conventional weapons has caused devastating human suffering and regional instability.
He said the treaty aims to enhance regional and international peace and security, and expressed hope for productive discussions.
During the 5-day conference, participants will hold separate discussions on various topics and adopt a final report.

Japan's delegation to the Asian Games in Indonesia has removed 4 players from the men's basketball team for breaching the code of conduct for Japanese athletes.
The 4 players left Indonesia for home early on Monday morning.
The head of the Japanese delegation, Yasuhiro Yamashita, announced the expulsion at a news conference in Jakarta on Monday. Yamashita won a gold medal for judo in the men's open-weight category at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
Yamashita said the 4 players are Takuya Hashimoto, Keita Imamura, Takuma Sato, and Yuya Nagayoshi.
Yamashita said the 4 players were wearing their team uniforms when they took women to a hotel and behaved inappropriately after visiting an entertainment district last Thursday.
Yamashita said they have been disqualified for breaching the code of conduct for athletes who represent Japan.
The code says athletes should never forget the pride of being national representatives before, during and after the Asian Games and they should set a good example at all times.
Yamashita apologized to the people of Japan for causing trouble and betraying their expectations.
The Japanese men's basketball team got one win and one loss in the preliminary round before the Asian Games opened on Saturday.

Japanese police plan to adopt a new emergency call system across the country to allow anyone to request help by just touching the screen of their smartphone.
The National Police Agency says it will launch a smartphone application with this aim in the fiscal year that starts next April.
Agency officials say people will be connected to local police headquarters and will communicate with dispatchers through text messages.
The officials say people will be able to send pictures from accident or crime scenes to show the damage there. They also say dispatchers will be able to immediately find out where calls are made from if global positioning systems are used.
The agency has been working to develop the system based on a request from a group of people with hearing disabilities.
Tokyo police have already introduced a similar app.
Agency officials say the new system is designed for people with hearing and speaking disabilities as well as stalking and domestic violence victims who have difficulties talking aloud because their tormentors are nearby.

A Japanese research firm says working women who quit their jobs to give birth led to financial losses of about 1.2 trillion yen, or nearly 11 billion dollars, last year.
The finding is in a report by the Dai-ichi Life Research Institute and based on the welfare ministry's surveys on childbirth trends.
The report estimates that about 200,000 women in Japan left their regular or part-time jobs last year to have babies.
The paper calculates that their absence from the workplace during 2017 resulted in a total loss of income of about 5.4 billion dollars. Another 5.4 billion dollars were lost through lower corporate productivity.
The report also says when women return to the job market after raising children, they often cannot earn as much as before. It says this trend is putting a drag on Japan's economic growth.
The economists at the Dai-ichi Life Research Institute recommend that employers expand childcare facilities and leave programs to make it easier for women to return to work after giving birth.
