Japan's Prime Minister has pledged greater cooperation with Washington on denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula in a meeting with US Vice President.
16 Asia-Pacific nations have given up on efforts to reach a deal, by the end of this year, on a free trade pact that would cover half of the world's population.
Tokyo stocks plunged on Tuesday, following sharp declines on Wall Street. The benchmark Nikkei Average briefly dropped nearly 3.5 percent.

Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has pledged greater cooperation with the United States on denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula. Abe met US Vice President Mike Pence in Tokyo on Tuesday.
Abe said, "Today, Vice President Pence and I had an in-depth discussion on North Korea. And we have agreed on the need for complete compliance with the UN Security Council's resolutions to achieve a complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula."
Pence said, "The pressure campaign will continue, the sanctions will remain in full force, until we achieve the final, fully verified denuclearization of North Korea. The United States, Japan and the world will accept nothing less."
North Korea has been hit with a number of UN sanctions over its nuclear and missile programs.
They target in part exports of coal and oil.
The country has been accused of trying to evade the sanctions through illicit maritime trade -- something Abe addressed. He said, "We have also reaffirmed that Japan and the United States should continue to cooperate to respond to ship-to-ship cargo transfers banned by the UN Security Council resolution."
Pence and Abe also touched on trade.
Earlier this year, Abe and the US President agreed to enter into negotiations on a trade agreement.
The US is looking to lower its trade deficit with the country -- a statement Pence echoed.
He said, "The United States has had a trade imbalance with Japan for too long, and American products and services too often face barriers to compete fairly in Japanese markets. It's for that reason that we welcome steps that have been taken to address these issues over the past two years, beginning with the US-Japan Economic Dialogue.
But the best opportunity of free, fair and reciprocal trade will come in a bilateral trade agreement.
As for China, Pence said the difficulties the US faces with Beijing have been well documented. The two countries are in the middle of a trade war threatening the global economy.
The US also routinely conducts freedom of navigation drills in the disputed South China Sea.
China has militarized a number of islands in the waters.
Together, Pence and Abe called for a free and open Indo-Pacific, and Abe urged other countries in the region to do the same. He said, "Large and small, every country should participate regardless of the size of the nation. We have to achieve a free and open Indo-Pacific. To achieve this vision, we welcome the fact that cooperation between the US and Japan in the area of infrastructure, energy and digital technology is making steady progress."
The initiative is seen as part of efforts to counter China's growing influence.
Pence is visiting Singapore next for a series of regional meetings where he is being joined by Abe.

16 Asia-Pacific nations have given up on efforts to reach a deal, by the end of this year, on a free trade pact that would cover half of the world's population.
Ministers from countries such as Japan, China, and India met in Singapore on Monday to discuss the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, or RCEP.
They were aiming to reach what they called a "substantial conclusion" by the end of 2018.
But the ministers failed to narrow their differences over issues such as tariffs.
India remains cautious about raising the percentage of tariff-free items, due to concerns about a possible increase in Chinese imports.
A senior Japanese trade ministry official says the countries have confirmed that they will try to conclude the pact by the end of next year.
The countries' leaders are expected to discuss the issue at their meeting on Wednesday.
In light of US President Donald Trump's protectionist moves, the leaders are said to be eager to reach a deal.

Tokyo stocks plunged on Tuesday, following sharp declines on Wall Street. The benchmark Nikkei Average briefly dropped nearly 800 points, or 3.5 percent.
The Nikkei closed Tuesday's session at 21,810. That was 459 points, or 2.06 percent, lower from Monday's close.
Japanese suppliers to Apple were big losers. That was after Apple shares tumbled in New York on reports a component supplier for the company cut its outlook.
Analysts say concerns about the US-China trade dispute and Italy's budget controversy also weighed on sentiment.

New York stocks plunged by more than 600 points on Monday, dragged down by a drop in technology company shares and a stronger dollar.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average sank by 2.3 percent from Friday's close, ending the day at 25,387.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq fell 2.7 percent. Apple shares tumbled on reports that a parts supplier to the tech giant has seen a drop in orders. That triggered selling that pulled down other IT firms as well.
Analysts say high-tech stocks led a recent rise in share prices so their decline has had a knock-on effect across the whole market.
They say the impact of the stronger dollar is also casting a shadow over the earnings of exporters.

Amnesty International says Myanmar's de facto leader is no longer a symbol of hope and courage.
It's taking back its most prestigious human rights prize from Aung San Suu Kyi.
She received the group's Ambassador of Conscience Award almost a decade ago for her fight against the country's military junta.
She was under house arrest at the time.
But now, Amnesty International says Suu Kyi has not done enough to confront violence against the Rohingya Muslims or a clamp down on freedom of expression.
Amnesty says that inaction is a 'shameful betrayal' of the values she once stood for.
Suu Kyi has also had a prize revoked from the US Holocaust Memorial Museum as well as freedom of the city recognitions in Ireland and Britain.
About 720,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled to neighboring Bangladesh since last year.
That's when Myanmar's security forces cracked down on the minority group in the western state of Rakhine.
UN investigators have said Myanmar's top military brass should be tried for genocide.
The government has rejected those accusations.

Japan's government has projected up to 47,000 foreign workers could come to the country in fiscal 2019 under proposed revisions to the immigration law.
Debate began in the Lower House plenary session on Tuesday on a bill to amend the Immigration Control law that would allow the entry of more foreign workers from April of next year.
Government officials said a labor shortfall of more than 600,000 people is expected in fiscal 2019. They said if the bill is passed, about 33,000 to 47,000 workers from other countries could be accepted during the period.
In the 5 years from fiscal 2019, officials have projected a labor shortage of between 1.3 and 1.35 million people and the arrival of about 260,000 to 340,000 foreign workers.
Opposition parties had been demanding that the number of workers accepted under the revised immigration bill be quickly quantified.

Health officials in Japan say nearly 2,000 people have contracted rubella, or German measles, this year.
The infections are spreading from the Tokyo metropolitan area to other parts of the country.
The National Institute of Infectious Diseases in Tokyo announced on Tuesday that 154 new cases were reported in the week up to November 4th, bringing the total to 1,884.
Most of those infected are in the Tokyo metropolitan area, but cases were also found in central, western, and south-western parts of the country.
The number of men infected is 4.5 times greater than that for cases among women. Over 80 percent of the men are aged in their 30s to 50s.
Health regulations in place from 1977 to 1995 required only that junior high school girls be vaccinated for rubella, making men who are now between the ages of 30 and 60 vulnerable to infection.
Among infected women, those in their 20s form the largest proportion.
Rubella is a viral infection that causes fever and rashes. Doctors say an infection during pregnancy could result in the baby suffering visual, hearing or heart disorders.
The authorities are calling on women to have been vaccinated twice before becoming pregnant.
They say it's also important for family members of pregnant women or anyone in frequent contact with them to get vaccinated.

Los Angeles Angels 2-way player Shohei Ohtani has been named Major League Baseball Rookie of the Year.
Ohtani was announced the winner on Tuesday after a vote by members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America. He earned 4 wins as a pitcher and hit 22 homeruns in his first season in the United States.
The other finalists were both New York Yankees infielders. Miguel Andujar's batting average is .297, and he hit 27 home runs. Gleyber Torres notched 24 homers.
Ohtani is the fourth Japanese-born player to win the award. Hideo Nomo was named Rookie of the Year in 1995, Kazuhiro Sasaki in 2000 and Ichiro Suzuki in 2001.
Ohtani said he is delighted to win the award. He said, "If you look at the numbers, I have contributed as a batter to the team. I regret not being able to pitch during an important part of the season."
A torn ligament in Otani's pitching elbow prevented the Japanese sensation from throwing for the full season.
Ohtani is the first 2-way player to receive the award since it began in 1947. He is often compared to baseball legend Babe Ruth who was known for his prowess as a pitcher and a slugger a century ago.

Japan's space agency is to analyze the contents of a recovery capsule brought back from the International Space Station by a Japanese cargo spacecraft.
The recovery capsule was detached from Kounotori 7 and reentered the Earth's atmosphere on Sunday Japan time.
It landed in the Pacific Ocean near the Ogasawara Islands and was recovered by a ship.
On Tuesday, the contents of the recovery capsule -- protein for medical research and ceramics for material development, both produced in zero gravity -- arrived at a Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency facility north of Tokyo in a cooler box.
The container that protected the protein and ceramics from the roughly 2,000-degreee Celsius heat upon reentry was also shown to the media.
The container that features thermos bottle technology is designed to retain inside temperature of 4 degrees Celsius using coolant.
The space agency will verify whether the recovery capsule successfully brought back the delicate material from space.
The capsule itself is scheduled to arrive at the facility this weekend.
JAXA project leader Kota Tanabe said they will assess everything carefully because it will be of great advantage to Japan's space development to have its own recovery technology.

Canned mackerel developed by high school students in central Japan has been officially certified as space food by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, or JAXA.
Wakasa Senior High School in Fukui Prefecture has been studying the development of space food for 12 years. JAXA recently added the canned mackerel to its list of 33 items of Japanese space food.
A ceremony was held at the school on Monday to commemorate the certification.
After a representative of the students received a certificate from a JAXA official, Japanese astronaut Koichi Wakata gave a talk.
Wakata said communicating with each other is important on the International Space Station, and that eating is one factor. He also said he is looking forward to seeing the canned mackerel travel to space in the future.
The students say locally cultivated fish is heavily seasoned to make up for astronauts' diminished sense of taste. They also made the canned dish sticky with kudzu starch to prevent liquid from floating away.
JAXA officials say the new space food may possibly be delivered to the space station as early as next year.
It is the first time that a food item developed by high school students has been certified by JAXA as space food.
