Japan's Defense Minister has met with the governor of Okinawa to seek his understanding for the resumption of reclamation work for the relocation of a US air base in the prefecture.
Takeshi Iwaya visited Okinawa on Saturday for the first time since the defense ministry resumed the work on November 1st, after the land minister issued an injunction that allowed it to go ahead. The land ministry has jurisdiction over the related laws.
Governor Denny Tamaki, who was elected in September, opposes the central government's plan to move the US Marine Corps' Futenma Air Station from the densely populated Ginowan City to the less populated coastal district of Henoko in Nago City.
Iwaya said in a meeting with Tamaki that he believes the government and Okinawa share the view that removing the dangers posed by the base at its current site and returning that land to Japan is the core of the issue.
He said he will do whatever he can to gain the understanding of the governor and residents.
Tamaki said the people of Okinawa made it clear in the gubernatorial election that they oppose the relocation plan.
He said that efforts to achieve peace are helping to transform the security environment in East Asia, as shown by the US-North Korea summit in June.
Tamaki said he hopes that the government will abandon the relocation plan.

The US and China held ministerial-level diplomatic and security talks in Washington on Friday, amid tensions over trade.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Defense Secretary James Mattis hosted Chinese Communist Party Political Bureau member Yang Jiechi and Chinese Defense Minister Wei Fenghe.
As the trade dispute between the US and China escalates, the two countries are also in confrontation over national security issues.
China is increasing its military presence in the South China Sea, where recently military vessels of the two nations nearly collided.
In Friday's talks, the US hosts conveyed their concerns about China's buildup of a military stronghold in the South China Sea, and about the Beijing's policy on Taiwan.
In response, the Chinese guests only repeated past claims, laying bare the differences in positions of the 2 countries.
However, the US and Chinese officials have planned a bilateral leadership summit, on the sidelines of the meeting of G20 leaders to be held later this month in Argentina. The 2 countries also agreed to sustain cooperation in the future.
US Secretary of State Pompeo told a joint news conference that even as the US and China confront difficult challenges in their relationship, cooperation remains essential on many issues.
Pompeo added that the US doesn't plan to pursue a cold war-style containment strategy against China. The US Secretary of State stressed the desire to build a constructive relationship.
Yang agreed that cooperation is the only good option for the US and China. He said China is ready to proceed with negotiations over the trade dispute.
Yang expressed his hope that the 2 countries can reach an agreement that is acceptable to both sides.

White House adviser Peter Navarro has expressed skepticism about whether it's possible for the US and China to end their trade dispute.
In a speech in Washington on Friday, Navarro said the negotiations with China are different from those with Japan or Europe because of trust issues.
He said China failed to keep promises it made the Obama administration relating to the militarization of the South China Sea and cyber-attacks on US businesses.
Navarro criticized current and former Wall Street executives for trying to pressure President Donald Trump to end the trade dispute.
He said "globalist billionaires" influenced by China are weakening the president's position.
He did not call out any individuals by name but mentioned Goldman Sachs several times.
Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping plan to meet later this month in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on the sidelines of a G-20 Summit.

The Financial Times newspaper reports that its senior editor has been refused entry into Hong Kong as a tourist after the local authorities declined to extend his work visa.
The report says Victor Mallet, the FT's Asia news editor, tried to enter Hong Kong as a British visitor but was turned away on Thursday.
British citizens are usually allowed to stay in the territory for up to 180 days without a visa.
The Hong Kong government refused to extend Mallet's work visa in October, giving no reason.
In August, Mallet hosted a talk by the founder of a group advocating the territory's independence from China.
The local authorities are thought to have refused his visa renewal in line with Beijing's tough stance against pro-independence activities in the territory.
The Hong Kong Journalists Association issued a statement saying that barring Mallet's entry undermines freedom of speech.
It said the international community will harbor more doubts about Hong Kong on whether it is still a free and open society, and that the city's international image and status will be seriously harmed.

An exhibition on the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki is being held in a city in western Belgium where chemical weapons were used during World War One.
The exhibition began on Friday at a museum in Ypres, which is known as a place that experienced the first massive chemical weapons attack. The city has been deepening ties with Hiroshima.
The exhibition is aimed at letting people know about the horror of war and weapons ahead of the centenary of the end of World War One.
Hajime Hayashi, the Japanese ambassador to Belgium, said at a ceremony to mark the opening of the exhibition that atomic bombs were used for attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki 27 years after the use of chemical weapons in Ypres. He said the memories of these events should be shared.
Items displayed at the exhibition include pictures showing the landscapes of the 2 Japanese cities after the atomic bombings, and personal belongings of victims.
Origami cranes folded by elementary school children in Ypres were also displayed with notes written in Dutch.
