The prime ministers of Japan and Australia have agreed to deepen cooperation to realize a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

Shinzo Abe and Scott Morrison held their first meeting in Darwin, northern Australia, on Friday.

At a joint news conference after the talks, Morrison said Australia opposes protectionism. He spoke of the importance of being open to trade and investment for nations to succeed and the region to prosper.

Abe said he and Morrison confirmed that they will deepen their countries' special, strategic partnership to realize their shared vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific.

Touching on North Korea, Abe said the 2 leaders affirmed their continued cooperation to monitor the North's offshore transfer of goods in violation of United Nations' sanctions. Abe thanked Australia for sending aircraft and vessels to monitor ship-to-ship transfers.

On trade, Abe and Morrison welcomed recent developments that will enable the 11-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership to take effect this year. Both nations are members of the free trade pact.

They also agreed to work together to uphold and strengthen rules-based multilateral trade, and to seek an early conclusion of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership that involves 16 Asia-Pacific nations.

Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has visited a war memorial in Australia to pay his respects to the victims of Japanese bombing there during World War Two.

Abe arrived in the northern city of Darwin on Friday. He and Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison together laid wreaths and prayed silently at the Darwin Cenotaph.

The city suffered air bombings by the now-defunct Imperial Japanese military during the war.

Abe later held his first summit with Morrison, who assumed his post in August. Abe likely enlisted Australia's cooperation to achieve the vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

The Japanese prime minister earlier visited Singapore, where he attended a series of meetings with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN.

He is due to leave Australia on Saturday for the last stop of his regional tour, Papua New Guinea, for a summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum.

The leaders of Japan and Russia have reached an agreement that could be a breakthrough in the decades-long dispute between the 2 countries.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe says he and President Vladimir Putin will accelerate negotiations on a peace treaty based on a 1956 joint declaration.

It states that 2 of 4 disputed islands would be handed over to Japan on the conclusion of a bilateral peace treaty.

Prime Minister Abe said he reaffirmed with President Putin that they will not pass on to the next generation the issue. Sovereignty over the islands has been disputed for more than 70 years since World War Two.

Abe said President Putin and he were equally determined to put an end to the issue, and they've reaffirmed their commitment.

The prime minister also said the 2 leaders agreed that they will expedite peace treaty negotiations based on the 1956 joint declaration between the 2 countries.

Abe said President Putin will visit Japan for the G20 summit next year, and before that, he will travel to Russia, possibly early next year, to further discuss the issue with the Russian president.

Abe added that the agreement demonstrates the leadership of President Putin and himself in the determination to conclude negotiations on a peace treaty. He said this has been a challenge for the 2 countries all through the postwar era.

The stumbling block on a peace treaty has been the territorial issue concerning 4 Russian-controlled islands. Japan claims them. The government maintains they are an inherent part of Japan's territory. It says they were illegally occupied after the war.

In September, Putin proposed signing a peace treaty without any preconditions by the end of the year. Abe later said Japan couldn't do that until the territorial dispute is resolved.

Japan has lodged a protest with South Korea over a research ship's entry into Japanese territorial waters without consent.

The Foreign Ministry said on Friday a Japan Coast Guard patrol ship spotted the vessel entering territorial waters near the Takeshima Islands in the Sea of Japan after 9 AM on the previous day.

Japan claims the islands, which are controlled by South Korea.

The ministry said the Coast Guard warned the research vessel, and it left the territorial waters shortly after noon.

Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told reporters that it is unacceptable for South Korea to conduct an unauthorized scientific marine survey in Japan's territorial waters and exclusive economic zone.

He said that the Foreign Ministry lodged a protest with the South Korean embassy in Tokyo the same day as the incursion and that the Japanese embassy in Seoul also protested to the country's Foreign Ministry.

The Japanese government also protested after a similar incident in August.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has indicated he is willing to discuss nuclear disarmament with US President Donald Trump. The 2 leaders will likely meet in Argentina on the sidelines of a G20 summit that opens later this month.

Putin said on Thursday in Singapore that one of the key issues on the agenda of the talks with Trump will be strategic stability. He said Russia and the United States should understand the future of the 2011 New START nuclear disarmament treaty and the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, or INF Treaty, which took effect in 1988.

Trump has declared he is scrapping the landmark INF Treaty with Russia, while the New START treaty will expire in 2021.

North Korea's state-run media has reported the country decided to deport a US citizen who it says has been detained since he entered the North illegally.

The Korean Central News Agency said on Friday that authorities had detained an American who crossed the border with China into the country on October 16th.

The detainee is identified as Bruce Byron Lowrance, but the media did not mention the person's occupation and age.

The media said the detainee confessed to have entered the country at the direction of the US Central Intelligence Agency.

Lowrance is the first American that North Korea has said it detained since it freed 3 Americans ahead of the summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump in June.

The UN General Assembly's human rights committee has adopted a resolution criticizing North Korea's human rights climate.
It also calls for the repatriation of abducted foreigners.

The resolution criticizes a lack of freedom of movement and expression in North Korea... and notes that its human rights situation does not appear to be improving.
It also condemns systematic abductions by Pyongyang.
Japan maintains North Korean agents abducted at least 17 of its nationals in the 70s and 80s.
Japanese Ambassador to UN Koro Bessho said, "Considering the long years of enormous sadness and sufferings experienced by the abductees and their families, I would like to emphasize the urgency of this issue and call for the immediate return of all the victims of abduction."
Bessho also said Tokyo is ready to engage directly with Pyongyang over the abduction issue.

But the North's ambassador rejected the resolution.
Kim Song expressed deep concern, saying that the European Union and Japan instigated confrontation by tabling a draft resolution which is "full of political criticism and fabrication."

US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross has brushed aside speculation that a summit between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping will help ease trade tensions between the 2 countries.

Ross was speaking to US media company Bloomberg on Thursday about the summit to be held on the sidelines of a Group of 20 meeting in Argentina this month.

He said the leaders are at best likely to agree to a framework for further talks to resolve the tensions, and that achieving a full formal deal by January is impossible.

Ross said the US is sticking to its plan to raise tariffs on 200 billion dollars' worth of Chinese goods from the current 10 percent to 25 percent in January.

The president of Japan Airlines has apologized for the recent arrest of a copilot at London's Heathrow Airport for exceeding the legal limit for alcohol.

Yuji Akasaka spoke to reporters on Friday after submitting a report to the transport ministry about the details of the incident and preventive measures.

He said something like this should never happen and pledged his company will carry out steps to prevent a recurrence and regain trust.

The president disclosed that the 2 other pilots did not confirm the results of the copilot's preflight breath tests at the London airport.

Japan Airlines concluded that the copilot cheated on breaths tests in a way that his drinking would not be detected.

The company plans to punish those involved, saying that the 2 other pilots also had a responsibility to supervise the copilot.

A Japanese-style izakaya pub themed around a popular animation has opened in central Tokyo. It's the result of a collaboration between the show's producers and online eating-out guide Gurunavi.

In the animation, "Isekai Izakaya Nobu," the restaurant mysteriously opens onto an imaginary country in medieval Europe. Customers from all walks of life drop in and experience Japanese pub food for the first time.

The show has been available online since April in various languages, including Japanese, English and Chinese.

Back in Tokyo, visitors can try Japanese food featured in the series, such as hot pot and tofu dishes.

The pub also serves vegetarian versions using soybeans instead of meat.

An Indonesian woman said, "As a Muslim, I'm really happy to be able to eat in an izakaya like this with no concerns."

Executive Officer of Gurunavi, Emi Tsubakiyama said, "I hope that visitors to Japan, as well as people overseas, can get to know Japanese food through the show."

Gurunavi says the new restaurant is part of its tourist outreach ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
