US and North Korean chief negotiators have begun bilateral working-level talks in Sweden. The meeting is the first of its kind in seven months.

The talks began on Saturday morning between US Special Representative for North Korea Stephen Biegun and North Korea's chief nuclear negotiator Kim Myong Gil.

Earlier, vehicles believed to be carrying the negotiators arrived separately at the venue outside Stockholm.

The negotiations have stalled since the second summit between President Donald Trump and leader Kim Jong Un in February in Hanoi, Vietnam where the US demanded that a number of nuclear facilities be scrapped. The North demanded an easing of US sanctions.

The two leaders agreed in their third summit in June that the two countries would resume working-level talks within a few weeks.

But the plan was delayed after the US and South Korea conducted joint military drills and North Korea repeatedly test-launched short-range missiles.

The US has demanded measures for denuclearization by the North as a first step. Pyongyang wants guarantees to safeguard its political system and an easing of sanctions in exchange for steps toward denuclearization.

Trump has expressed hope for the talks despite Pyongyang's test-firing of a submarine-launched ballistic missile on Wednesday.

The death toll in the arson attack on a Kyoto Animation studio in July rose to 36 on Friday.

Police say a woman in her 20s died from her burns in hospital. The victim was a studio employee and had been on the first floor of the building at the time of the attack.

She suffered burns all over her body before escaping the building.

Police say they will decide whether to release her name after consulting with her family and the company.

Thirty-three people suffered injuries in the incident. Five remain in hospital.

The suspect, Shinji Aoba, suffered severe burns. Police plan to arrest him on suspicion of arson and murder when he recovers from his injuries.

Staff at Kyoto Animation held a memorial ceremony in late September for those who died in the incident. About 250 people attended, including bereaved families, company employees and attack survivors.

The company plans to hold a similar event open to the public in Kyoto City on November 3 and 4.

The US government says Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao will visit Japan later this month to attend the enthronement ceremony of Emperor Naruhito.

The White House made the announcement on Friday.

Secretary Chao was born in Taiwan, and moved to the United States with her family at the age of 8. After earning her MBA from the Harvard Business School, she worked for private financial institutions and the federal government.

She served as Secretary of Labor under the administration of President George W. Bush, becoming the first Asian American woman ever appointed to the Cabinet.

Chao assumed the post of transportation secretary in 2017, when President Donald Trump took office.

Her husband is Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

The last time Japan held an enthronement ceremony, in 1990, the United States sent a vice president. Washington had initially made arrangements for Vice President Mike Pence to attend the October 22 event, but the plans did not come to fruition.

A high-ranking Catholic official says Pope Francis's planned visit to Japan in November will be a dream come true for him.

Archbishop Jean-Claude Hollerich spoke to NHK in the Vatican on Friday, one day before his appointment to cardinal.

Last month, the Pope named him one of the new cardinals who are ranked immediately below the pontiff.

Hollerich lived in Japan for more than 20 years in total up until 2011, and served as vice president of Sophia University in Tokyo.

Hollerich said Pope Francis has longed to visit Japan.

He said the Pope understands the suffering of the cities of Nagasaki and Hiroshima, which were devastated by atomic bombs in World War Two, and thinks Japan is the best place to convey his message for peace.

Hollerich expressed hope that the pontiff's message will help improve relations between Japan and its neighboring countries, including China and South Korea.

Pope Francis is scheduled to visit Japan between November 23 and 26. He will deliver a message on nuclear weapons in Nagasaki and give a speech at a meeting for peace in Hiroshima.

In Tokyo, the Pope will meet Emperor Naruhito, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, and survivors of the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami in northeastern Japan. He will also hold a mass at Tokyo Dome.

Japan's Toshikazu Yamanishi has won the men's 20-kilometer racewalking event at the track and field world championships in Qatar. Yamanishi's victory earns him a place in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The race started at 11:30 PM on Friday, in temperatures rising above 30 degrees Celsius and high humidity.

Yamanishi was in a large group at the front from the start.

Around six kilometers into the race, he broke out of the pack in pursuit of a Chinese runner. Yamanishi overtook him after seven kilometers, increased his pace and maintained his lead throughout.

He finished with a time of one hour, 26 minutes and 34 seconds.

Yamanishi is the first Japanese athlete to win a gold medal in the men's 20-kilometer racewalking event at either the world championships or the Olympics.

Yamanishi expressed joy and relief after the race. He said getting the world number one ranking is not his goal right now. He said he still has some way to go first.

Asked about his aspirations for the Tokyo Olympics, Yamanishi said he would be happy if he can inspire people who see his race.

In the men's 50-kilometer racewalking in the Qatar event, his compatriot Yusuke Suzuki won gold.
