One of the most powerful storms of the year is on track to hit wide areas of eastern Japan this weekend, including Tokyo. Japan's Meteorological Agency says Typhoon Hagibis may bring record rainfall. Authorities are urging people to prepare in advance and protect their lives.

Agency official Yasushi Kajihara said, "The Typhoon may make landfall in the Tokai or Kanto region on Saturday, and to remain extremely strong. In addition to storm winds and high waves, we're looking at the possibility of record rainfall around the Kanto region."

Meteorological officials have classified Typhoon Hagibis as "very strong". The storm is moving northwards over the Pacific towards Japan's main island of Honshu.

Hagibis could be on par with a typhoon that killed more than 1,200 people in the Kanto region and Izu archipelago in 1958.

The Meteorological Agency is preparing to issue emergency warnings for heavy rain.

Storm surges are expected along the Pacific coast of eastern Honshu from Saturday through Sunday. Torrential rain is forecast from Friday through Sunday, with a severe risk of floods and landslides.

Key words : transportation companies

Transportation companies in Japan are preparing for the approaching typhoon.

Train operators say they will cancel Shinkansen bullet train services between Tokyo and Nagoya from tomorrow morning. They will also suspend most trains between Nagoya and Shin-Osaka and between Shin-Osaka and Okayama.

Bullet train services on the Tohoku, Yamagata, Akita, Hokuriku and Joetsu lines will be reduced or suspended from late Saturday morning.

The East Japan Railway company announced that it will also begin suspensions from 9 a.m. on Saturday on its local lines in the Tokyo metropolitan area and in Shizuoka prefecture.

JR East says the suspensions will continue until at least noon on Sunday.
The company is advising people to check their official websites and social media accounts for updates.

All Nippon Airways is cancelling all domestic flights on Saturday to and from Tokyo's Haneda and Narita airports.

Japan Airlines is also cancelling most of its domestic flights.

The government is expanding its information services in other languages as record numbers of tourists are visiting Japan.

The Japan National Tourism Organization has information by phone available 24 hours a day in English, Chinese and Korean at: 050-3816-2787.

The government is urging people to download an app for visitors called "Safety Tips."

It also suggests following Japan's tourism organization official twitter account to stay informed.

Japan's government is boosting information services in foreign languages about the approaching typhoon Hagibis and possible disruptions to transportation.

The move comes as Japan is attracting record numbers of tourists from overseas.

Telephone consultations in English, Chinese and Korean will be available at the Japan National Tourism Organization. The number is: 050-3816-2787.

Information on evacuation areas will be provided on mobile phone apps and social media.

Additional staff with foreign language abilities have been deployed at major airports.

Emergency power sources and mobile phone chargers are being set up at tourist information centers across the country.

When typhoons and earthquakes hit Japan last year, many foreign tourists were stranded at airports and resorts and complained about a lack of information.

The government hopes the measures taken this year will help ease those concerns.

Japan's industry minister Isshu Sugawara is calling on people to prepare for possible power blackouts as Typhoon Hagibis approaches the Japanese mainland.

Sugawara was speaking to reporters after a Cabinet meeting on Friday. He said his ministry is taking every possible measure to deal with damage and blackouts expected to be caused by the typhoon.

Sugawara said that in case of blackouts, the ministry will do its best to quickly assess damage, inform the public when power will be restored, and put workers on standby for quick restoration of power.

He noted that Typhoon Faxai hit Chiba Prefecture near Tokyo last month, leaving wide areas without power for days or even weeks.

The minister asked managers of hospitals and waterworks to ensure that emergency power generators are functioning and to secure fuel. He also recommended that people to fill their cars with gas before the typhoon hits.

Home centers and DIY facilities in Tokyo have been crowded with people shopping for emergency items including batteries and portable gas stoves.

At one such store in Nakano Ward, about 50 people waited in line before it opened on Friday morning. Some items there have already sold out.

A woman in her 20s said she came to buy a stove and a mobile phone battery charger, and that she's worried the typhoon will damage her wooden house.

The powerful Typhoon Hagibis is on track to hit wide areas of eastern Japan this weekend. And it's having a big effect on businesses and consumers throughout the region.

Major supermarket chain Ito-Yokado will close 124 stores in Tokyo and seven other prefectures on Saturday. The company says it's taking the measure to ensure the safety of its customers and employees.

And beer maker Sapporo says it will halt operations at four factories in eastern Japan on Saturday.

Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea will be closed from Saturday until at least noon on Sunday. It's the first whole-day weather-related closure in 35 years.

People in Tokyo have been flocking to home improvement stores to stock up ahead of the storm.

At one outlet, consumers were buying tape to reinforce windows, and plastic sheets to cover damaged roofs. Batteries and emergency food items were also in hot demand.

The store says sales of some items are four times greater than normal.

South Korea's government has pledged to do all it can to make the country's industries more competitive and reduce their dependence on imported parts and materials.

The government on Friday launched a panel to discuss ways to achieve the goals. Friday marks 100 days since Japan tightened controls on exports of three high-tech materials to South Korea.

The panel is headed by Deputy Prime Minister Hong Nam-ki, who also serves as economy minister. Members include government officials and business people.

Hong told the participants that the export controls have so far had no impact on production of high-tech products.
But he warned that both countries will inevitably suffer damage if the trade friction lingers, and urged Japan to retract the measure.

The government said it will select more than 100 items it wants to make more competitive and earmark more than 2 trillion won, or roughly 1.6 billion dollars, for that purpose each year.

Iran's state-run news agency says there was an explosion on an Iranian tanker in the Red Sea. The blast was allegedly caused by a missile attack.

The news agency says the explosion occurred on Friday morning off Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. It quotes a state-run oil company that owns the tanker as saying that the ship was apparently hit by two missiles.

The report says the ship's storage tanks suffered damage, and oil spilled into the sea. But it says the ship itself is in stable condition and none of the crew were injured.

Key words : Trump told reporters

US President Donald Trump told reporters he hopes he can mediate between Turkey and Kurdish forces to resolve the conflict between the two sides in northern Syria.

Trump made the remarks on Thursday at the White House.

Earlier in the day, Trump tweeted that "We have one of three choices: Send in thousands of troops and win Militarily, hit Turkey very hard Financially and with Sanctions, or mediate a deal between Turkey and the Kurds!"

Trump told reporters that he does not think American people want to see US military go back into the region again.

He added that the US has very good relationship with the Kurds.

Turkey has been intensifying military operations launched against Kurdish forces in northern Syria on Wednesday. The Turkish defense ministry said more than 200 Kurdish fighters have been killed so far.

But the number of reported civilian casualties are on the rise. The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 10 civilians have been killed in Syria. Turkey's state-run media say six civilians have been killed and 70 others wounded in shelling by Kurdish fighters.

The Turkish operation came on the heels of the US withdrawal from northern Syria. Analysts say Trump remarks are intended to curb criticism from those who point out that the president tacitly accepted Turkey's offensive.

Key words : UN disarmament

The UN disarmament committee has begun discussions after a three-day delay due to a spat between the United States and Russia.

The meeting of the General Assembly's First Committee opened on Thursday in New York.

The UN members discuss the reduction and management of nuclear and non-nuclear weapons in October and November every year.

This year's debate had originally been scheduled for Monday. But the United States refused to issue visas for the Russian representatives, citing security reasons.

The Russian side reacted sharply, forcing the committee to postpone the meeting.

Izumi Nakamitsu, the UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, said she is hopeful that member states will encourage the parties to the New START Treaty to extend that important constraint on strategic nuclear weapons.

Toshiki Fujimori, an assistant secretary general of Nihon Hidankyo, or the Japan Confederation of A- and H- Bomb Sufferers Organization, is observing the debate.

He will also submit signatures of hibakusha, or atomic bomb survivors, to the committee.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali won the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for his peacemaking efforts with Eritrea.

Abiy is being recognized for his efforts to bring an end to a decades-long conflict with neighboring Eritrea.

He began working to improve relations when he became prime minister in April last year.

The two nations reached a historic peace agreement three months later, in July.

Ethiopia and Eritrea had been embroiled in conflict triggered by an armed clash since 1998.

The committee says the breakthrough was Abiy's willingness to accept an arbitration ruling by an international boundary commission in 2002.

It says Ethiopia still faces many challenges, such as ethnic rivalries and millions of refugees from neighboring countries, in addition to up to 3 million internally displaced Ethiopians.

The committee's citation also says it hopes the prize will encourage efforts to promote reconciliation, solidarity and social justice.

Abiy has engaged in other peace and reconciliation processes in East and Northeast Africa.

The Nobel committee says the prize is intended to recognize all stakeholders working for peace and reconciliation in the regions. He is the 100th recipient of the award.
