US authorities have boosted their measures to curb the spread of the new coronavirus, with the governor of New York ordering strict restrictions on people's movements.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the directive at a news conference on Friday. It requires workers in non-essential businesses to stay home, effective from 8 p.m. Sunday. The measure excludes police, healthcare providers, and other types of workers.

Cuomo warned that if infections continue to rise at the present rate, the state will likely need twice the current capacity of hospital beds within the next 45 days.

Additional beds may come from the US military, which is preparing to send a hospital ship to New York Harbor. The Army Corps of Engineers is considering converting hotel rooms and college dormitories in the state into makeshift medical care units.

Meanwhile the government has ruled to limit non-essential travel over the borders with Canada and Mexico.

The US confirmed its first infection with the virus in the western state of Washington in January. The nationwide tally of cases stood at 15,219, as of Friday.

Worst-hit areas include the eastern state of New York, which has seen 7,102 cases in less than three weeks since reporting its first infection earlier this month.

US Defense Department says it is planning to create more than 10,000 rooms for coronavirus patients in the state of New York, where the largest outbreak of infections in the country is taking place.

Commander of the Army Corps of Engineers Todd Semonite told reporters on Friday that his troops plan to renovate hotel rooms and college dormitories for virus-infected patients.

To keep tight quarantine, the engineers will make the atmospheric pressure inside those rooms lower than the outside, so air will not leak out to the environment.

The defense department has already decided to dispatch a hospital ship to New York Harbor to address the possible scarcity in hospital beds in the area.

The Army Corps of Engineers say it is currently talking with New York and 12 other states over what assistance to provide to enhance medical systems in the states as the viral infections grow rapidly.

Students at a university in the US state of New York have been told to vacate their dormitories so that they can be converted into makeshift medical care units for people infected with the coronavirus.

The state government on Friday announced it had confirmed 7,102 infections. It is the highest figure in the country, accounting for about 40 percent of the total number of cases.

Authorities say the state has only 53,000 hospital beds which will not be enough as the infections in New York are expected to peak in the coming weeks. A plan is underway to convert hotel rooms and college dormitories into rooms for infected people.

Students at New York University living in the school's dormitories have been given 48 hours to clear out their rooms.

A 22-year-old Japanese student, Risa Kimura, who is a junior at the university, says she was shocked to hear the news all of a sudden. She says she has decided to return to Japan after she failed to find alternative accommodation.

Kimura says she understands the conversion plan, but that they should have notified the dorm residents much earlier.

She says there is a lack of information about when classes will resume and whether she can live in the dorms again.

Italy has reported its highest day-to-day increase in deaths from the new coronavirus, bringing the total to more than 4,000 in the country.

The Civil Protection Agency said on Friday that there were 627 new deaths, bringing the total to 4,032.

Italy's death toll exceeded China's the previous day.

The total number of cases in Italy rose to 47,021.

The virus is putting pressure on the medical system in the north, where infections are concentrated.

In a video statement, the country's nurses' federation said there is no more time, adding that beds, equipment and personnel are in short supply.

Civil Protection Chief Angelo Borrelli said there were now 8,000 intensive care beds, up from 5,400 before the outbreak, stressing efforts to increase the number.

Iran's president has urged the United States to lift its sanctions against Tehran, saying the measures are hampering his country's efforts to contain the new coronavirus.

Hassan Rouhani released his message to the American people on the Persian New Year, which began on Friday.

Rouhani said, "Today, the Iranian people are harmed by both the deadly coronavirus and the callous US government policy of economic terrorism inflicted on them."

He said, "The sanctions imposed by the US Government have resulted in many ordinary Iranians losing their jobs and incomes."

The president said, "The sanctions have drastically undermined the ability of the Iranian people to fight the coronavirus."

Rouhani warned that "any hostile actor seeking to undermine Iran's health system and restricting the needed financial resources to tackle the crisis, will undermine the fight against the pandemic all over the world."

The president called on Washington to remove its sanctions against Tehran immediately. He said, "The time has come for the American people to speak loudly and hold their government accountable."

Iran has confirmed more than 19,000 coronavirus infections. Fatalities stand at 1,433.

USA Swimming has called for a one-year postponement of the Tokyo Olympic Games as the coronavirus pandemic continues worldwide.

The governing body for the sport of swimming in the United States made the request in a letter to the US Olympic & Paralympic Committee on Friday, asking the committee to advocate for the postponement.

It said that US "athletes are under tremendous pressure, stress and anxiety, and their mental health and wellness should be among the highest priorities."

The swimming organization argued that the postponement is "a solution that provides a concrete path forward and allows all athletes to prepare for a safe and successful Olympic Games in 2021."

The US Olympic & Paralympic Committee responded to the letter, saying that it is premature to insist that a decision be made on this summer's Tokyo Games.

Norway's Olympic and Paralympic Committee on Friday asked the head of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, not to hold the Tokyo Games until the coronavirus pandemic is under control.

Japan's Defense Minister Taro Kono says North Korea fired at least two short-range ballistic missiles from around 6:45 to 6:50 a.m. on Saturday.

Kono told reporters that the missiles were launched from North Phyongan Province in the country's northwest and flew eastward.

He said they flew at lower trajectories than the Scud missiles that the North possesses, and their flight distance is believed to have been from about 300 to 400 kilometers.

Kono also said Pyongyang is obviously aiming to acquire new missile technology, and that poses a clear threat and challenge to the international community.

He suggested that the North's leadership may be trying to tighten its grip on power as there are reports that the new coronavirus is spreading in the country.

Kono vowed efforts to strengthen vigilance, surveillance and missile defense.

A new train station building at Harajuku on Tokyo's Yamanote loop line has replaced the 96-year-old adjacent structure, which was famous for being the oldest wooden station building in the capital.

The last train rolled out from the old platforms in the early hours of Saturday. East Japan Railway will demolish the wooden edifice, which it says is not sufficiently fire resistant.

The new building is a two-story steel structure that has four times the floor space of its predecessor.

There are separate platforms for trains going in opposite directions, which is expected to ease congestion.

JR East says it will use materials that comply with fire resistance standards to re-create the old building.
