In Italy, the number of people infected with the new coronavirus has topped 5,000 with more than 1,000 fresh cases being reported. The death toll has exceeded 200.

The Italian government reported on Saturday that the number of confirmed infections in the country increased by 1,247 to 5,883 as the virus spreads mainly in the northern region of Lombardy. The number of new cases marked the largest single-day increase.

The government also said the death toll rose by 36 to 233, which is the second highest number of fatalities after China.

Among those confirmed to be infected is the leader of the governing coalition's Democratic Party, Nicola Zingaretti.

The government has closed all schools across the country until March 15 and plans to spend 7.5 billion euros on additional medical workers and providing financial support for companies hit hard by the outbreak.

More than 50,000 residents in 11 northern towns have been trapped in their communities for nearly two weeks in a virtual lockdown.

The government is reportedly considering implementing the same measure in other regions as well.

Cases of infection are also rising in other European countries. France has reported 949 and Germany 795.

US Vice President Mike Pence says authorities will work with the cruise industry to strengthen the screening of passengers for the novel coronavirus.

Pence met industry officials in Florida on Saturday after 21 of the dozens of people tested onboard the Grand Princess cruise ship were found to have the virus. The vessel, now moored off California, is carrying about 3,500 people.

After the meeting, Pence said the government and industry agreed to further enhance entry and exit screening and establish shipboard testing. He said they will also set up standards to quarantine ships and transport sick passengers to land.

Pence added officials are tracking another ship that may have shared crew members with the Grand Princess or the Diamond Princess.

The virus caused a mass infection on the Diamond Princess cruise ship, which was quarantined near Tokyo.

A person who attended an annual gathering of conservatives near Washington DC has tested positive for the new coronavirus. US President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence were among those at the conference.

The Conservative Political Action Conference, or CPAC, was held late last month in Maryland. Every year, CPAC brings together conservatives from around the US, including many Republican politicians.

The organizer says the participant was tested in New Jersey and was confirmed to have the virus on Saturday.

The organizer says the person had no interaction with Trump or Pence and did not attend events in the conference's main hall.

Just recently, two people who attended a pro-Israel lobbying group's conference held in Washington late last month tested positive for the virus. Vice President Pence was there as well.

Rescue work is underway in the southern Chinese province of Fujian after a hotel used to quarantine people from coronavirus-hit areas collapsed.

Local media say on Saturday evening the building in Quanzhou City came down trapping about 70 people.

It was being used to quarantine people who had traveled from Hubei province and other areas. Medical workers were also staying at the hotel when the incident occurred.

Forty-three people had been rescued by early Sunday. Footage from the site shows the entire building flattened and rescue workers using heavy machinery to save survivors.

Local media quoted an eyewitness as saying there was a loud noise just before the building collapsed.

Media report the hotel with 80 rooms opened two years ago after being renovated.

Chinese health authorities say 44 more cases of the new coronavirus were confirmed in mainland China on Saturday. It is the second straight day the number of new cases has been under 100.

China's National Health Commission says the death toll from the virus in mainland China has risen to 3,097, with 27 new deaths on Saturday in hardest-hit Hubei Province.

It also says the total number of infections in mainland China rose by 44 on Saturday to 80,695.

Of the 44 new cases, 41 cases were confirmed in Wuhan. The other three were international travelers who were confirmed to have the virus after arriving in China.

The authorities say two of them traveled from Italy and Spain and are being treated in hospital.

An increasing number of new cases involve people from other countries who enter China. Authorities in Beijing and Shanghai are more closely monitoring arrivals from Japan, South Korea, Italy and Iran.

Lebanon has announced it will suspend a foreign debt payment due on Monday, fueling fears that the move will further dent the value of the country's currency and accelerate inflation.

Prime Minister Hassan Diab said on Saturday that Lebanon has to halt the bond payment of 1.2 billion dollars to maintain foreign currency reserves.

Lebanon's current public debt is equivalent to nearly 170 percent of its gross domestic product.

The government plans to conduct fiscal reforms and restructure debt through such measures as deferring payments. But analysts say the road ahead will be bumpy.

Lebanon's economic crisis has worsened since mass protests against the government's plans to impose new taxes began to spread nationwide in October. The government said the levies were needed to ease fiscal strains.

Then-Prime Minister Saad Hariri resigned in late October to take responsibility for the protests.

Western media say Saudi Arabian authorities have detained senior members of the royal family in connection with an alleged attempted coup.

The move is believed to be part of efforts by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to further consolidate power and remove potential rivals to the throne.

The Wall Street Journal and other media outlets reported on Friday the detention of former Crown Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, known as MBN, and Prince Ahmed bin Abdulaziz al Saud.

MBN is a nephew of King Salman and had his crown prince title removed three years ago. Prince Ahmed is a younger brother of King Salman.

The two princes are reportedly accused of plotting to oust the king and the crown prince.

They were potentially in line for the throne, but have kept a distance from the 34-year-old crown prince, who is trying, as the de facto ruler of Saudi Arabia, to reform the kingdom's economy so that it is less dependent on oil production.

In 2017, Saudi authorities detained a number of businessmen and royal family members, who dissented from the crown prince, on corruption charges and confiscated their assets worth about tens of billions dollars.

Nine years after the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident, more than half of the waste created by decontamination work is still kept near residents' homes.

About 14 million cubic meters of soil and vegetation has been collected in clean-up operations in areas affected by the nuclear accident in Fukushima Prefecture, except for heavily contaminated off-limit areas.

The environment ministry plans to transfer all such waste to intermediate storage facilities near the crippled nuclear power plant by March 2022.

As of the end of February, only about 6.3 million cubic meters, or around 45 percent of the total waste, had been transferred to the facilities.

The rest was stored at school compounds, parks, and temporary storage sites.

Environment Minister Shinjiro Koizumi told reporters on Friday that the waste needs to be removed from the locations as quickly as possible so that local residents can feel secure.
