The coronavirus outbreak is now affecting one of Japan's favorite sports, sumo. Officials from the Japan Sumo Association say the spring tournament in Osaka will be held without any spectators. The event is scheduled to start on March 8.
Japan Sumo Association Chairman, Hakkaku, said at a news conference on Sunday, "Based on the government's request, and considering that all of society is fighting the spread of the new coronavirus infection, we have made this decision."
This comes as the government is calling for major sports and cultural events to be canceled, postponed or scaled down. It will be the first time a sumo tournament is held without spectators.
The association chairman added that if any of wrestlers are found to be infected, the tournament will be canceled, even if it has already started.
One of sumo fans said, "I think sumo wrestlers will feel lonely without spectators. But I think the fans will cheer in front of their TVs."
Pre-ordered tickets for the event have been sold out.
The association says it will consider ways to refund the money.

University students in Japan who will graduate in March of next year have started job hunting.
While job fairs are being cancelled due to the outbreak of the new coronavirus, some companies are holding online briefing sessions.
At a venue in Tokyo, recruiters spoke to a camera, explaining the jobs being offered and the schedule for selection process.
Students watching the sessions used online chat to ask questions, such as whether employees may be transferred to other locations, or if it is easy to take vacations.
Makoto Takahashi, editor in chief of Mynavi Corporation, which organized the sessions, says while the information that can be conveyed over the Internet is limited, his company wants to provide students with as much information as possible, frequently and quickly.

At a primary school in Ayase City, near Tokyo, teachers are working over the weekend to prepare assignments for children to complete over the unexpected holidays.
Tendai Elementary School will close from Tuesday until March 13, following the city's decision.
The teachers were printing math worksheets so the children can review what they have learned since the beginning of the school year last April.
The teachers were also preparing checklists for children to keep regular hours, with items such as waking time and bed time.
The school has prepared a holiday schedule for non-Japanese speakers, as about 10 percent of its students are of foreign origin.
A sixth grade teacher said she is still a little confused about the situation, but that she wants to do her best for her children in the little time she can spend with them.
The sixth graders are set to graduate in March.

Political instability continues in Malaysia after the country's king appointed former interior minister Muhyiddin Yassin to replace interim Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, who resigned last week.
Muhyiddin officially became prime minister in a ceremony on Sunday. The palace said the king had determined that Muhyiddin has the most support in parliament, based on lists of recommendations from all the political parties.
Muhyiddin, who is 72, was deputy prime minister under Najib Razak's administration that ended in 2018. He became an executive in Mahathir's governing coalition and was also interior minister.
Mahathir told reporters before the appointment ceremony that Muhyiddin needs to be backed by a majority of lower house lawmakers to legally become prime minister.
He urged him to hold an emergency session of parliament as soon as possible.
Observers speculate that Mahathir will seek a no-confidence motion against Muhyiddin as soon as the parliament is convened.

Former US Vice President Joe Biden has won the Democratic South Carolina primary. It was the party's fourth nomination contest for the US presidential election and the first victory for Biden.
Biden called his supporters in the state "the heart of the Democratic party," adding "we've won big because of you. We are very much alive."
Biden is a moderate Democrat. Even though he was considered a favorite due to name recognition, he came in fourth in Iowa and fifth in New Hampshire.
The former vice president under Barack Obama has strong support among African Americans.
He called South Carolina a "firewall," because African Americans account for 60 percent of Democratic voters. He held rallies every day to solidify his base, and touting his track record as a man who supported the first African-American US president.
With a win in South Carolina, Biden has proven that African Americans support him, which is crucial for the Democratic Party and for his party nomination.
The win has narrowed the gap between Biden and the national frontrunner, Bernie Sanders, ahead of "Super Tuesday" on March 3, when 14 states hold primaries.

Hundreds of young protesters in Hong Kong have rallied in a downtown district on Kowloon Peninsula. Some of them set fires on the street and clashed with police.
The demonstrators gathered near a subway station in the district late on Saturday.
The young people protested the police use of excessive force when they cracked down on demonstrators inside the station in August of last year. Some of them threw petrol bombs and set fires on the surrounding roads and the entrance to the station.
In response, the police fired tear gas, and one officer pointed his gun at media reporters and residents after demonstrators threw something at him. The tense situation continued until late at night.
A large number of people have been protesting against the Hong Kong government and police since June of last year.
Those demonstrations subsided after a large protest march held on New Year's Day, but are now expected to become active again.
Hong Kong residents are increasingly dissatisfied with the government's response to the new coronavirus outbreak.
There is also growing criticism of the government's recent attempts to suppress the protests, including the Friday arrest of pro-democracy activists by police.
