The head of the World Trade Organization has expressed concern regarding US President Donald Trump's plan to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.

WTO Director-General Roberto Azevedo warned in a statement on Friday that a trade war would be in no one's interests.

He said: "The potential for escalation is real, as we have seen from the initial responses of others."

The chairman of the Japan Iron and Steel Federation has asked US President Donald Trump to reconsider his pledge to impose heavy tariffs on steel products.

The industry group sent a letter to Trump on Friday.

The letter calls the proposed increase a "market-distorting measure", which would cause "serious harmful effects not only on steel exports from Japan but also on steel trade worldwide".

It expresses fears the move may spark a "negative chain reaction" among other countries, affecting not only steel but also other products.

The federation asks Trump to exercise "fair and sound judgment".

US President Donald Trump has posted a defiant Twitter message, amid global criticism of his plan to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.

The president tweeted on Friday that "trade wars are good, and easy to win." The Trump administration has argued that steel and aluminum prices have dropped globally, due to overproduction in China, and that the United States has been importing the materials at unfairly low prices.

The administration believes purchasing huge volumes of steel and aluminum from China and other countries, to produce American fighter jets and warships, could threaten national security.

China and other key US trading partners reacted sharply, warning that they would take countermeasures.
US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross told US media on Friday that Trump's announcement "seemed" to apply to all countries.

Trump is expected to make an official decision on the plan as early as next week.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has called for international cooperation on a manned mission to the moon.

Abe made the appeal in a video message to a meeting of the International Space Exploration Forum in Tokyo on Saturday.

Ministers and representatives of space agencies from some 50 countries, including the United States, China and Russia, as well as international organizations, participated in the gathering.

Abe said that space frontiers are now part of the social infrastructure essential to people's daily lives, such as satellite communications and observations of the Earth.

He said that global cooperation should be strengthened based on technical capabilities and a relationship of trust developed through various international joint projects.

Abe stressed that countries should work hand-in-hand to go to the moon and beyond.

He said Japan wants to accelerate discussions with other nations on a new era of international space exploration.

The prime minister called for joint efforts toward plans to build an international space station orbiting the moon and to send an international manned mission to the moon.

Last year, the Japanese government revised its basic space policy so that the country can contribute its technological expertise to a lunar mission.

Sources say Tokyo prosecutors have seized documents that they believe corroborate allegations of bid-rigging by contractors in a maglev train project.

The 4 contractors are Obayashi Corporation, Kajima Corporation, Shimizu Corporation and Taisei Corporation.

Prosecutors suspect representatives from the 4 companies held discussions in 2014 and 2015 to divide up contracts in the massive project.

Sources familiar with the investigation said prosecutors seized documents from some of the firms that provide a breakdown of the orders that each company would win, and indicate that the contractors agreed to the arrangement.

The sources also said that prosecutors obtained a detailed memo written by an executive at one of the contractors that describes the contents of discussions with the other firms.

On Friday, officials from the Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office arrested a Kajima executive and a former Taisei executive.

The 2 are suspected of colluding with officials from Obayashi and Shimizu in advance of the bidding process to decide who would win contracts to build train stations. The act would be a violation of Japan's anti-monopoly law.

The sources said the 2 have denied the charges, but that former executives of Obayashi and Shimizu have admitted involvement in the alleged bid rigging.

The maglev project, ordered by Central Japan Railway Company, will eventually provide an ultra-high speed train link between Tokyo and Osaka.
