Japan's defense minister says the F-35B fighter jet is covered by a study on enhancing the capabilities of the Maritime Self-Defense Force flat-decked vessel Izumo.
Itsunori Onodera was answering a question from an opposition lawmaker on Friday at the Upper House.
The legislator had asked whether the study covers the jet, which is capable of short takeoffs and vertical landings.
Onodera said nothing has been decided on how to operate the Izumo or whether to introduce the jet. But he said that as the vessel will be in service for the next 40 years, the government is gathering information for various options.
Onodera disclosed that the study also covers 2 types of unmanned aircraft.
He added that they are being studied with no assumption of their introduction.
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the government has not looked at any concrete plan to convert the helicopter-carrying Izumo into an aircraft carrier. But he added that it's natural to study extending the usage of SDF equipment.

US President Donald Trump says he will impose heavy tariffs on imports of steel and aluminum. Trump said on Thursday that he will sign an executive order next week to impose tariffs of 25 percent on steel imports and 10 percent on aluminum imports. He said the levies will remain for a long period of time.
Trump has yet to disclose which country he will target. But the measure's main target will be China, raising concern the 2 nations will have fierce trade friction.
The concern hammered share prices on the New York Stock Exchange later in the day. The Dow Jones Industrial Average briefly lost more than 500 points.
Market players say Trump's comment sent steel and aluminum-related issues sharply up, but other shares declined across the board. They add that investor sentiment also took a hit as the Dow slid below the 25,000 mark.

Japan's trade minister, Hiroshige Seko, says the big picture of Trump's plan is not yet clear, such as which countries will be affected.
At a news conference on Friday, Seko said he believes that steel and aluminum imports from Japan, a US ally, would never pose a threat to US security. He added that he hopes to convey that message to the US.
Seko indicated that he plans to ask the US to exclude Japan from the proposed tariffs.

Tokyo stocks plunged on Friday after US President Donald Trump vowed to impose heavy tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.
The benchmark Nikkei average of 225 selected issues briefly lost more than 630 points due to concerns that the tariffs could lead to trade friction and hurt the global economy.
The Nikkei index closed at 21,181, down 542 points from Thursday's close. The one-day decline was the 3rd largest this year.
The broader-based TOPIX index finished at 1,708, down 31 points.
Market players say fears that Trump's protectionist policies may put a brake on global growth triggered heavy selling.
Investors are watching whether Japanese exports will be subject to the planned tariffs.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in has told US President Donald Trump that he plans to send a special envoy to the North in the near future to maintain the recent engagement between the 2 Koreas.
The 2 leaders talked over the phone on Thursday.
The South Korean presidential office says Moon told Trump that the envoy's planned visit is in reciprocation for the dispatch of Kim Yo Jong, the younger sister of leader Kim Jong Un.
Kim Yo Jong was among the high-level North Korean delegates dispatched to the South for the PyeongChang Olympics.
The office says Moon and Trump discussed the results of meetings between the South Korean government and the North Korean delegates.
The office adds the 2 presidents agreed to continue to work for the Korean Peninsula's denuclearization by maintaining the momentum of the South-North dialogue.
The White House says Trump and Moon noted their firm position that any dialogue with the North must be conducted with the goal of complete and verifiable denuclearization, adding they remain committed to maintaining close cooperation.
During her stay in the South, Kim Yo Jong invited Moon to visit the North for a summit. Moon responded that such a meeting will only come after Pyongyang and Washington resume their talks. North Korea said it is ready to talk with the US.
Analysts believe the special envoy will call on North Korea to show its willingness to denuclearize itself in order to bring about dialogue with the US.

North Korea is denying a UN report that says Pyongyang is helping Syria's government to make chemical weapons.
The North's state-run broadcaster says the United States fabricated the claim to keep up pressure on the country.
The broadcaster cited the North's foreign ministry institute for American studies. It says North Korea has never developed chemical weapons and the country opposes them.
US media say a yet-to-be released UN report alleges the North has been supplying Syria with equipment to make chemical weapons.
Two North Korean shipments to Syria have been intercepted in the past 6 months. North Koreans were reportedly spotted at chemical weapons facilities in the country.
Syria's government has been accused of using chemical weapons during the civil war, including in Ghouta.
The US State Department says the North may be working with Syria to help fund Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programs.

Japan's space agency says Japanese astronaut Akihiko Hoshide will be the commander of the International Space Station during his 6-month mission in 2020.
The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, or JAXA, made the announcement on Friday.
The 49-year-old astronaut will be the second Japanese to take command of the ISS. Koichi Wakata became the first Japanese to assume the role in 2014.
Hoshide installed a Japanese laboratory in the ISS by operating robotic arms in 2008. He also stayed at the outpost for 4 months in 2012.
The ISS commander is responsible for the safety of the crew members and completing missions.
Hoshide says he wants to take on the challenge of infinite space as the leader of the ISS in cooperation with crew members and others involved worldwide.

Japan's northeastern prefecture of Fukushima hopes to end a blanket radiation test for locally grown rice in 2020 at the earliest.
Governor Masao Uchibori told the prefectural assembly on Friday that officials want to change to sample testing when no rice is found with higher-than-permitted radiation levels for 5 consecutive years.
The checks started after the 2011 nuclear accident at the Fukushima Daiichi plant. Officials have not found any rice that exceeds the permitted levels for the past 3 years.
But Uchibori indicated that the full-scale tests will continue in 12 municipalities near the plant.
The checks are a burden for farmers who have to bring their harvested rice to the test sites. The cost of maintaining the test equipment is another problem.
A panel of experts began reviewing the testing system last year.
Prefectural officials say they will give briefings to consumers, farmers and people from the retail industry before they shift to sample testing.

Japan's global positioning system is set to become fully operational on November 1st, 7 months later than planned.
Science and Technology Policy Minister Masaji Matsuyama announced the delay on Friday.
He said the system is the world's first to achieve a margin of error of just a few centimeters. But he said technical adjustments are needed to stably maintain the level of precision.
The system is designed to offer positioning data 24 hours a day using 4 Michibiki satellites. The 4th went into orbit last October.
The system is expected to be used for automatic operation of agricultural and construction equipment, and new services including delivery by drones.
