Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has indicated the government will soon designate the torrential rain that hit the west of the country as a severe natural disaster. That means affected municipalities will receive increased financial support from Tokyo.
Abe revealed the plan at the 7th round of emergency task force meetings on Sunday morning.
He said the government plans to provide larger subsidies for repair work on roads, rivers and farmlands, and introduce measures on disaster-related insurance for small businesses.
Abe added that the government will do its utmost so that people in affected areas will be able to live without worries as soon as possible.

North Korea has criticized the United States for pressing it to denuclearize, and has reiterated its call for talks on declaring the end of the Korean War.
The criticism came on Sunday in a state-run website commentary. The article was on high-level talks held earlier this month between US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Vice Chairman of the ruling Workers' Party Kim Yong Chol.
During the meeting in Pyongyang, the US demanded that North Korea first take steps toward denuclearization.
The commentary criticized the US for not referring to establishing peace on the Korean Peninsula, which it said is a basic issue in preventing the situation from worsening and in averting war.
The article also said declaring the end of the Korean War is the first step toward easing tensions. It argued that the US should show its sincerity by taking phased and simultaneous actions based on mutual trust and respect.
The commentary shows gaps between Washington and Pyongyang in their positions on their talks.
The US says it will maintain economic sanctions on the North until complete denuclearization is achieved.
North Korea says measures for confidence-building between them should come first.

Senior military officers from the United States and North Korea have held a meeting on repatriating the remains of American troops killed in the Korean War in the 1950s.
US Defense Department officials say the meeting took place on Sunday in Panmunjom, the village on the military demarcation line that divides the 2 Koreas.
US military vehicles were seen crossing a bridge to the village at around 8 AM, local time.
South Korea's Foreign Ministry says the delegates at the meeting included generals.
Returning the remains of US prisoners of war and those missing in action was one of the agreements signed by US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at their summit last month.
The US side brought wooden boxes to Panmunjom, as North Korea had said it was ready to return the remains of 200 personnel.
The Defense Department described Sunday's meeting as productive.
South Korean media are reporting that the officers may also be discussing a declaration that would officially end the Korean War.

The US Justice Department has charged 12 Russian intelligence officers with meddling in the 2016 presidential election.
The department said on Friday that the Russians were charged with conspiracy to defraud the United States, as well as other criminal counts.
The indictment says the Russian military officers hacked computer networks belonging to the Democratic Party to interfere with the election, stealing emails and other documents.
It also says the suspects released the stolen data online using false identities.
The Russians are also alleged to have hacked the website of a state board of elections and stolen personal data on about 500,000 voters.
Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein told reporters that the hacking did not affect the election results.
Special Counsel Robert Mueller is also probing possible collusion between President Donald Trump's campaign and Russia in the election. But Rosenstein said no US citizens are involved in the charges.
The announcement came just days before Monday's summit between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Trump tweeted that the hacking took place during Barack Obama's administration, not his. He criticized his predecessor for not doing anything, even though Obama was informed by the FBI before the election.

Weather officials in Japan are warning of continued high temperatures on Sunday in western and eastern parts of the country, and are advising people to take the utmost precaution against heatstroke.
On Saturday, daytime temperatures surpassed 38 degrees Celsius in Gifu, Mie and Kyoto Prefectures.
Record highs for this year were observed at around 300 out of 927 locations across the country.
The Meteorological Agency says a strong high-pressure system is expected to cover wide areas on Sunday.
Officials say that risk of heat stroke is increasing, especially in the areas hit by the recent record rain where many residents are still staying at emergency shelters or working to clear debris.
They are advising residents to take periodic breaks, drink water, and get appropriate salt intake.
They are calling for caution against further landslides and flooding in those areas, as the torrential rain has loosened the ground and mud and logs have blocked rivers.
They also warn that unstable atmospheric conditions, mainly in eastern Japan, may bring thunderstorms in the afternoon.
