Okayama Prefecture has the largest number of evacuees at 3,050, and Hiroshima Prefecture has 2,996.

Health ministry officials say more than 255,000 households were without water as of 8:00 PM on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has visited areas in Okayama Prefecture hardest hit by record downpours that devastated western Japan.

Abe on Wednesday inspected a collapsed levee in Kurashiki city, and laid flowers for the victims of widespread flooding in the area.

He then met Okayama Governor Ryuta Ibaragi, who requested that the affected areas be designated as severe natural disaster sites, which makes them eligible for government funding. The governor also sought financial support for survivors.

Abe later told reporters his government will provide comprehensive support, from necessary supplies to better shelters and temporary housing.

He said he's working to quickly designate severe natural disaster sites, so municipalities should not be concerned about a lack of funding.

The prime minister pledged to ensure that the survivors will be able to live without worries as soon as possible.

US officials have released an additional list of Chinese goods worth some 200 billion dollars, they say will be subject to a 10 percent tariff.

They include high-tech products along with consumer goods such as clothing, pork, and refrigerators, making up more than 6,000 items.

The latest escalation follows a 25 percent levy the US slapped on Chinese goods last week, worth some 34 billion dollars.

The first round of tariffs applies to about 800 Chinese products, ranging from robots to aircraft parts and vehicles.

Together, these measures will impact about half of all products the US imports from China. Officials say the move is a response to China's retaliatory tariffs on American goods.

US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer says China has not changed its behavior, which puts the future of the US economy at risk. He added that there is no justification for the Chinese retaliation.

His office will hold hearings on the measures in late August, before making a decision.

China's commerce ministry has strongly criticizes the US move to begin procedures for slapping an additional 10 percent tariff on Chinese goods, calling it "completely unacceptable" and vowed to retaliate.

A statement says the action would not only hurt China and the entire world but also hurt the US itself.

It says the Chinese government will be forced to impose necessary countermeasures to protect its core interests.

The announcement also says Beijing will immediately file a complaint with the World Trade Organization.

The US State Department has expressed its view that a working group to achieve North Korea's denuclearization was set up within the department, suggesting that a working group was not established between the 2 countries.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced after meeting with senior North Korean officials in Pyongyang last week that the talks had yielded an agreement to form a working group to achieve denuclearization. He said the United States and North Korea achieved ways to promote negotiations at the working level and this will lead both teams to continue negotiations.

But when NHK asked the State Department about the details of the working group, a spokesperson expressed the view that the working group had been established within the US government office.

The United States is stressing that progress toward denuclearization was achieved in the latest talks, while North Korea is asserting that the US is making unilateral demands.

In a televised speech on Wednesday, a day after the end of the rescue mission, Prayuth said considerable help and cooperation from in and out of the country led to the effort's success.

He expressed appreciation to volunteers, government officials, private firms, media and all others who devotedly joined the mission.

The season's first Pacific saury catch has been auctioned for more than 630 dollars a fish, the highest price on record, at a wholesale market in Hokkaido, northern Japan.

The auction began on Wednesday morning. More than 200 kilograms of Pacific saury was sold at the market in Sapporo City.

One kilogram of large-sized saury fetched over 4,500 dollars, or around 630 dollars a fish.

The season began on Sunday off the east coast of Hokkaido. The first haul on Tuesday, was 700 kilograms, only about a third of last year's size.

A wholesale firm official said the fish have become smaller and that the catches are dwindling.

He said he's happy that the saury fetched such a high price, partly to celebrate the start of the auctions. But he expressed concern that consumers may shun them if they become too expensive.
