Some US media outlets are reporting skeptical views about North Korea's commitment to dismantling its nuclear and missile programs. The reports are mainly based on analysis of recent satellite images.

President Donald Trump's administration is pushing for the North's denuclearization. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is expected to visit Pyongyang shortly to discuss the issue.

The Wall Street Journal reported in its online edition on Sunday that the latest satellite photos show a major expansion at a missile-manufacturing plant in Hamhung in the country's east.

The report says the work was being completed around the time North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met with Trump in Singapore last month.
In the summit, Kim made clear his commitment to denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.

The plant is reportedly producing solid fuel for ballistic missiles. A researcher who analyzed the images says the expansion probably suggests that Kim does not intend to abandon his nuclear and missile programs.

The Washington Post also reported on Sunday that information obtained after the summit indicates the North may be working to conceal part of its nuclear stockpile.

Earlier, NBC television quoted US intelligence officials as saying that North Korea has been increasing production of enriched uranium for nuclear weapons at secret sites.

The Bank of Japan's quarterly Tankan survey shows that business sentiment among large Japanese manufacturers worsened in June from 3 months earlier.

BOJ officials reach out to about 10,000 companies across Japan and ask what they think about business conditions.

The officials say the sentiment for large manufacturers stands at plus 21. That's down 3 points from the previous survey, and the 2nd drop in a row.

But the sentiment for major non-manufacturers shows plus 24...up 1 point from the last quarter.

The latest survey shows that confidence is mixed among large manufacturers and non-manufacturers.

The Tankan index represents the difference in the percentage of companies that say business is good and those that say it is bad. A positive reading means more companies are optimistic.

Leftist former Mexico City Mayor Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has declared victory in Mexico's presidential election held on Sunday.

Lopez Obrador held a news conference after election officials announced that he is projected to win more than half of the votes. He described the election night as historic and unforgettable.

Lopez Obrador ran from the National Regeneration Movement, a new left-wing party. His main rivals were Ricardo Anaya, from the largest opposition National Action Party, and former finance minister Jose Antonio Meade, who was backed by the ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party.

Meade conceded defeated while addressing his supporters. Anaya said he had called Lopez Obrador to congratulate him.

Lopez Obrador will be the first Mexican president in almost 90 years who does not belong to one of the country's 2 mainstream parties.

His victory appears to reflect a loss of trust in those parties among voters, amid rampant drug-related violence and corruption in Mexico.

Lopez Obrador, often referred to as leftist populist, upholds anti-establishment and Mexico First policies.
He says there will be consequences for US President Donald Trump unless he stops being rude to Mexico. His tough stance on Washington is expected to affect discussions on the North American Free Trade Agreement and illegal Mexican immigrants in the US.

Several deaths and injuries have been reported in a car bomb attack on a military patrol in northern Mali.

A French counter-terrorism force and Malian government troops were conducting a joint patrol in the city of Gao on Sunday at the time of the blast.

Local media say a bomb-laden vehicle drove into the patrol convoy. It is believed to be a suicide attack.

France sent troops to its former West African colony in 2013 to drive out Islamic extremist groups with links to Al-Qaeda. The militant rebels had put vast areas of northern Mali under their control.

French troops have since taken back major cities from the insurgents.

But the security situation in Mali remains fragile, as the extremists are hiding in the Sahara and continuing their offensive.

On Friday, an attack on the headquarters of a joint force of Mali and neighboring countries killed 2 soldiers.

Rescuers in Thailand are making progress in their search for 12 boys and their soccer coach, who could be trapped in a cave in the northern province of Chiang Rai.

They went missing on June 23rd and are believed to have become trapped after floods blocked their way out.

The governor of the province told reporters on Monday that divers had progressed 3 kilometers inside the cave and were moving farther inside.

The heavy rainfall that hampered earlier search and rescue operations subsided over the weekend, allowing officials to pump more water out of the cave.

Rescuers are aiming to reach an elevated spot 5 kilometers from the cave's entrance, where they hope the missing people escaped to.

The Thai Navy has stocked food and diving tanks at a base it set up 1.5 kilometers from the cave entrance.

Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan, who also serves as defense minister, said on Monday that he hopes the divers will reach the boys by the end of the day.

Two-time Olympic figure skating champion Yuzuru Hanyu has received Japan's People's Honor Award.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe presented the award to Hanyu at a ceremony at the prime minister's office on Monday.

Hanyu won his first Olympic gold medal in the men's singles at the 2014 Sochi Winter Games, and successfully defended his title at this year's PyeongChang Games.

Hanyu is the first male figure skater in 66 years to win gold at 2 successive Olympics. He has also won 4 consecutive Grand Prix finals and gold at 2 world championships.

Abe said Hanyu overcame personal plight resulting from the massive earthquake of 2011, and later an ankle injury ahead of the PyeongChang Games, to achieve the feat.

He also said Hanyu has deeply moved and encouraged many people, given hope to society, and sent a strong message about the effort to recover from the 2011 disaster.

Hanyu attended the ceremony wearing a traditional Japanese outfit made of silk from Sendai, the city he is from.

Abe wished him further success. In response, Hanyu said he will work hard to prepare for his next event.

Hanyu is the 26th individual to receive the award. At 23, he is also the youngest.

After the ceremony, he told reporters he is determined to live up to the award both as a skater and a person.
