Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe says the government will expand the scope of people who can be assigned to temporary housing after being affected by the recent floods and landslides.
Abe was speaking on Tuesday at a meeting of the government's emergency task force on the rain-triggered disasters that affected mainly western Japan.
He said he hopes relevant municipalities will provide temporary housing to people whose housing is not designated as totally destroyed.
A similar measure was taken following major earthquakes that hit southwestern Japan in 2016, but this would be the first case for a flooding disaster.
Abe stressed that debris left behind by the disasters needs to be cleared soon. He said to that end, the government will send an additional 1,000 Self-Defense Forces personnel and 70 dump trucks to the city of Kurashiki in Okayama Prefecture.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told reporters that about 55,000 people have been deployed to disaster-hit areas from police, fire departments, Self-Defense Forces and the Coast Guard.
Suga said they are engaged in rescue and relief efforts, as well as waste disposal and logistics activities.

US President Donald Trump is facing criticism at home for backing Russia's claim that it did not interfere in the 2016 presidential election.
Trump said after meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki on Monday that although he has great confidence in US intelligence, Putin was extremely strong and powerful in his denial.
Trump said he didn't "see any reason why it would be" that Russia was involved.
House Speaker Paul Ryan, a Republican, said in a statement that there is no question that Russia continues attempts to undermine democracy in the United States and around the world.
Veteran Republican Senator John McCain called Trump's news conference with Putin "one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory."
ABC News reported that Trump declined the opportunity to hold Russia accountable for crimes that took place in a country where he presides.
Trump has defended the summit as a success. He told Fox News that the US and Russia were doing horribly before now, but that he thinks he and Putin "really came to a lot of good conclusions."

The US Justice Department says it has arrested a Russian woman on suspicion of conspiracy.
In a statement released on Monday, the department said Maria Butina, a 29-year-old Russian citizen residing in Washington, was arrested on Sunday.
Butina allegedly developed relationships with individuals and infiltrated organizations in the United States that have influence in American politics from early 2015 through at least February 2017.
She is suspected of operating at the direction of a senior Russian government official, who was designated as a target of US sanctions last April.
The Justice Department suspects that her activities were aimed at advancing Russian interests.
The move follows the US indictments of 12 Russian intelligence officers last week over meddling in the 2016 US presidential election.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump accepted Russian President Vladimir Putin's denial of Russian interference in the election when the 2 met in Helsinki, Finland, on Monday.

An international news magazine says it has located a North Korean covert uranium enrichment site in the suburbs of the capital Pyongyang.
The Diplomat says the facility is known by US intelligence authorities as the Kangson enrichment site where material is produced for nuclear weapons. Its specific location had never been identified.
The magazine, which specializes in diplomacy and security, analyzed satellite imagery based on US intelligence information. It teamed up with researchers led by Jeffrey Lewis at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey in the US state of California.
The team says the Kangson facility, only a few kilometers from Pyongyang, may have been in operation since as early as 2003.
It says the compound is surrounded by a one-kilometer-long perimeter wall, and has a main hall 50 meters long and 110 meters wide. The building is said to be generating heat year-round, with its roof free of snow even during winter.
North Korea is known to have a uranium enrichment facility at its main nuclear compound in Nyongbyon. The Diplomat says Kangson is the first confirmed covert uranium enrichment facility other than Nyongbyon.
The magazine quotes a US intelligence source as saying that Kangson's output is estimated to be twice that of Nyongbyon.
Lewis told NHK that North Korea is continuing its nuclear and missile development at the same pace as before the US-North Korea summit in June.
At the summit, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un signed a statement reaffirming his commitment to the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. But the document fell short of providing specifics.

Japan and the European Union have signed a free trade deal in Tokyo after years of negotiations. The economic partnership agreement covers about 40 percent of the world's trade and 30 percent of its gross domestic product. The EPA calls for Japan and the EU to remove tariffs on most of each other's goods in phases.
Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe attended a signing ceremony on Tuesday afternoon with visiting European Council President Donald Tusk and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.
The deal requires Japan to remove tariffs on 94 percent of products imported from the EU, while the bloc must end levies on 99 percent of Japanese goods.
The 2 sides are aiming for early implementation of the pact once they obtain parliamentary approval.
At a joint news conference after the signing ceremony, Abe stressed the deal's significance.
He said the signing clearly shows their unwavering political will to lead the world in free trade amid the spread of protectionism.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government invited the media to observe the construction sites for the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics venues on Tuesday, 2 years ahead of the games' opening.
The sites for 4 new venues and the athletes' village were included in the tour.
One of them, the canoe slalom course in Tokyo's Edogawa Ward, is the first man-made canoeing course in Japan. It is 200 meters long and 10 meters wide and is expected to be completed in May of next year.
At the construction site for the Olympic Aquatic Center in Koto Ward, work is underway to lift a 6,000-ton roof to a height of 37 meters.
Work to build 3 swimming pools, including a 50-meter main pool and a diving pool, will start next month or later.
The Olympic Aquatic Center is expected to be completed in February of 2020.
The athletes' village in Chuo Ward will be capable of accommodating 18,000 people in 21 buildings and will be completed in December of next year. The Tokyo organizing committee plans to build by early 2020 a temporary commercial building to house restaurants and other facilities.
Officials say the 4 venues shown to the media on Tuesday are 20 to 40 percent completed.

Tokyo police have sent prosecutors files on Kobe Steel and its former factory officials in connection with data tampering of the company's products.
Authorities launched a probe last October after the firm admitted shipping aluminum and steel products with altered data to hundreds of firms at home and abroad.
The company and 4 former factory executives are suspected of involvement in the scheme and violating the fair-competition law.
Observers say prosecutors are likely to indict the firm as the misconduct took place repeatedly over years.
Kobe Steel's president and CEO have already stepped down over the scandal.
The firm's customers include foreign manufacturers of airplanes and autos. The US Justice Department is also investigating and has asked Kobe Steel for documents.
