A heat wave continues across western and eastern Japan on Wednesday, sending the mercury to the past record high in a city in Gifu Prefecture, central Japan.
The Meteorological Agency said a strong high pressure system is covering a vast area.
The highest temperature of 40 degrees Celsius, was recorded in Tajimi City, Gifu Prefecture, on Wednesday afternoon.
The highest measure in Japan was last recorded in Shimanto City, Kochi Prefecture, 5 years ago.
On Wednesday, the mercury hit 39.2 degrees in Gifu City, 38.9 degrees in Nagoya City in central Japan.
Authorities say the extreme temperatures are life-threatening, and warn people to take precautionary measures against heatstroke.
Experts advise people to refrain from doing exercise during the day, use air-conditioners when indoors, and keep well hydrated and take salt.
They also warn that the survivors in areas hit hard by the recent rain-triggered disasters and those engaged in recovery work should take particular care, as they are in severe circumstances.

The Fire and Disaster Management Agency says the soaring temperatures currently hitting Japan sent 9,956 people to hospital with heat stroke in the week ending last Sunday. Of them, 12 died.
The total number of victims was 3.7 times the number logged in the previous week, and 1.3 times that of a year earlier. Nearly half were aged 65 or older, while 3,310 were required to stay in hospitals.
By region, Osaka Prefecture in western Japan had the highest number, at 752. That was followed by Tokyo in eastern Japan, at 704; Aichi Prefecture in central Japan, at 687; and Hyogo Prefecture in western Japan, at 576.
In the areas of western Japan recently hit hard by catastrophic rainfall, the number of heat stroke victims doubled from a year earlier in Okayama Prefecture, at 353, and Hiroshima Prefecture, at 315. In Ehime Prefecture, there were 145 victims, or a 1.5-fold increase.
Authorities say the extremely high temperatures are behind the sharp rise.
As the heat wave continues, authorities are urging people to use air conditioners appropriately and stay well hydrated. They are also asking people to call for an ambulance quickly if they see someone having a seizure or drifting out of consciousness.

More than 10 days after the catastrophic rain that hit mainly western Japan, NHK has learned that the death toll rose to 216 people, with 15 remaining missing, as of Wednesday.
NHK reporters say that 4,669 people are still taking shelter at facilities in 15 prefectures.
The health ministry says around 55,500 households in Hiroshima, Ehime and Okayama Prefectures were still without running water. Municipality staff and Self-Defense Force personnel are delivering water to communities.
The authorities are starting to understand the damage to agriculture and forestry. The agriculture ministry officials say the financial cost to the industries has climbed to about 500 million dollars.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told reporters on Wednesday that Japan has received about 220,000 dollars in donations of from China, 180,000 dollars from Taiwan and 150,000 dollars from Thailand. He added other countries, regions and organizations have also expressed sympathy and offered support.

Japan's lawmakers have enacted a bill to strengthen measures for preventing health hazards caused by passive smoking.
The Upper House of the Diet approved the bill by a majority vote at a plenary session on Wednesday to amend the health promotion law.
The new legislation will ban smoking inside buildings of schools, hospitals and administrative organizations. But it will allow such entities to set up outdoor smoking areas on their premises.
Existing restaurants with a customer floor area of 100 square meters or under will be able to allow guests to smoke, if they put up a sign outside saying so.
But existing establishments with a larger customer floor area and those of any size to open from now on will be required to prohibit smoking except inside designated smoking rooms.
With the enactment of the revised law, smoking restrictions will come into force in about one year at schools, hospitals and administrative bodies, and from April 2020 at restaurants.

Indonesia's President Joko Widodo says he's hoping the leaders of North and South Korea will both attend the Asian Games to be held in Jakarta in August. He made the remarks in an exclusive interview with NHK.
The President is actively promoting next month's Asian Games. He said he hopes North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in will come to watch some of the competition.
He said, "We have not received an answer yet from either leader. But I believe their visit could reveal the potential for peace and friendship to be fostered through sport. We hope this year's Asian Games will be successful."
The 2 Koreas have already agreed to compete together in some sports and will march together at the opening and closing ceremonies.
Joko's invitations to the leaders could be a sign that he's trying to boost his diplomatic accomplishments before he finishes his first term as president.
The leader of South East Asia's most populous country also touched on issues in the South China Sea.
Joko reiterated the importance of dialogue when it comes to resolving issues in the South China Sea.
Still, last year, Jakarta decided to use the term 'North Natuna Sea' on domestic maps in an area that overlaps with China's claims.
Japan recently offered to help with development projects in that region. Some will take place on the Natuna Islands. Joko welcomed Japan's efforts.
The President said, "If people's livelihoods improve on the islands, we believe that will serve to strengthen our borders."
Joko also mentioned next year's presidential election as his first term is nearly up.
Candidates will be able to register in the next few weeks.
And Joko said he's seriously considering running again.
He said, "It's up to the people. If they want me to run for a second term, I'm ready to work hard with them to improve this country."
He still has a support rate of around 60 percent in Indonesia, so many are expecting Joko will formally announce his intention to run after he selects a vice presidential candidate.

US President Donald Trump says there is no rush in negotiations to denuclearize North Korea.
Trump made the remark while meeting members of Congress at the White House on Tuesday.
He said discussions with North Korea are going very well, and that the country has halted its nuclear tests and missile launches.
Trump said the United States and the North have good relations, so he will see how the negotiations go. He added that no time limit is set for them.
Trump held a historic summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in June. Kim pledged to work toward denuclearization, but the 2 sides' joint statement did not include any specific timetable for the process.
Differences between the 2 sides were apparent when US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met North Korea's vice chairman of the ruling Workers' Party Kim Yong Chol this month.
After the meeting, Pyongyang accused the United States of making "one-sided, robber-like" demands for denuclearization.
Given the circumstances, Trump may be trying to play down expectations from home and abroad for North Korea's early denuclearization.

Former US president Barack Obama has praised former South African president Nelson Mandela's policies of negotiation and reconciliation, and called on people around the world to perpetuate his legacy.
Obama was speaking in front of about 15,000 people in Johannesburg on Tuesday, one day before the 100th anniversary of Mandela's birth.
Mandela led a campaign against South Africa's apartheid policies and was imprisoned for 27 years. He became the country's first black president in 1994 after winning the country's first democratic election open to all races. He died in 2013 at the age of 95.
Obama praised Mandela for trying to end apartheid through negotiation and to realize reconciliation among races.
He said that much of the world is now threatening to return to an older, more dangerous and more brutal way and reminded people of Mandela's legacy.
Referring to South Africa's domestic issues, Obama called for greater efforts to address economic disparities.
A man in the audience said he wanted to take action along with the people of his community and workplace to make his country and the rest of the world a better place.

Japanese theater director Keita Asari has died. He was 85.
He died of malignant lymphoma at a hospital in Tokyo last Friday.
Asari was born in Tokyo in 1933. He founded the Shiki Theatre Company in 1953 and created numerous plays while studying at Keio University.
Asari went on to create Japanese-language versions of popular overseas musicals, including Jesus Christ Superstar, Cats and The Lion King.
He also devised unique ways to train actors, such as a vocalization method to help articulate lines. The Shiki acting troupe became the largest in Japan, with its own theaters nationwide.
Asari was devoted to exchanges with other Asian countries, and used actors and actresses from China and South Korea. In 2006, he put on a performance of The Lion King in Seoul.
Asari was also engaged in a wide range of other fields. In 1998, he produced the opening and closing ceremonies for the Nagano Winter Olympics.
The company says he became ill last September and had since been hospitalized.
