Delegates at a G20 finance meeting in Buenos Aires have expressed concern about the effect of recent trade friction on the global economy.
Finance ministers and central bank governors of the 20 leading economies are meeting for 2 days of talks.
On the opening day, delegates focused on risks to the global economy, and most took aim at protectionism. The United States recently imposed stiff tariffs on Chinese products and China responded with retaliatory measures.
Japan's Finance Minister Taro Aso said at a news conference after the meeting that protectionism benefits no one. He said free and fair rule-based trade is the way to grow the world economy.
Delegates also discussed foreign exchange rates. US President Donald Trump has sparked concern this could be a new battleground after claiming on Friday via Twitter that China and the EU have been manipulating their currencies.
A Chinese delegate rejected that claim.
The G20 members will issue a statement at the end of the meeting.

The commander of US Forces Korea has stressed the need to carefully study whether North Korea is sincere about abandoning its nuclear capabilities.
General Vincent Brooks addressed a gathering on national security in the western US state of Colorado on Saturday.
Brooks referred to footage released by Pyongyang in May of the demolition of the Punggye-ri nuclear test site in the country's northeast.
Brooks acknowledged that the test site had been demolished. But he said the US has still not confirmed whether the North has shut down its nuclear weapons manufacturing facilities and abolished its nuclear fuel.
Brooks said North Korea maintains its capability to build nuclear weapons and that its nuclear arms manufacturing process needs to be fully examined.
In a joint statement issued after the first-ever US-North Korea summit in June, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un reaffirmed his commitment to the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
But earlier this month, the country's Foreign Ministry criticized the US for making a "one-sided and gangster-like" demand. This followed talks in Pyongyang between US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and a senior North Korean official.
The rift between the 2 nations has left people in the US increasingly skeptical of whether denuclearization will be achieved.

Sweltering heat continues to shroud most of Japan. Temperatures reached nearly 40 degrees Celsius in some places on Sunday.
The Meteorological Agency says a high-pressure system brought blistering sunshine to western and eastern Japan.

A Japanese paper manufacturer has developed a new type of food packaging with the aim of reducing the amount of plastic waste. The Nippon Paper Group says the material is specially processed to preserve the freshness of items such as potato chips and cereals.
The company says it is receiving a growing number of orders, as the paper can be used as packaging for a variety of foods.
It will set up a new department next month to develop materials that can replace plastic.
The head of sales planning, Tomoaki Cho, says the Nippon Paper Group wants to proactively respond to the needs of customers who are looking for alternatives to plastic.
Multinational consumer goods company Unilever is already using recycled plastic in its product packaging.
Unilever started using recycled plastic bottles to make seals for shampoo containers in February.
Starbucks and American Airlines are among the US companies that plan to stop using disposable plastic straws.

A summer festival featuring traditional Japanese dancing has attracted around 35,000 people in Malaysia.
The Bon Dance Festival has been organized by Japanese residents and other groups every summer for more than 40 years. It's part of an effort to promote bilateral exchange. The festival is said to be one of the largest of its kind held outside Japan.
This year's event took place on Saturday near the capital, Kuala Lumpur.
Participants included Japanese children and hijab-wearing Muslim women, who were clad in yukata, a light kimono worn during the summer.
Dancing to traditional Japanese music, they circled around an elevated platform built for the occasion.
The Bon dance is performed to honor ancestors in Japan.
Even people who took part for the first time appeared to enjoy themselves, as those who were more experienced taught them how to dance.
One of the first-timers said it was nice to see so many people dancing and singing together. She added that it's fun to learn about a different culture.
