The South Korean presidential office says US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un have agreed to arrange a second summit as soon as possible.
The 2 met for 3 and a half hours in Pyongyang on Sunday. Pompeo later traveled to South Korea to brief President Moon Jae-in on the results of his meeting with Kim.
The South Korean presidential office says Secretary Pompeo and the North Korean leader discussed specific denuclearization steps to be taken by North Korea, and measures the US will implement in return.
The 2 are also believed to have talked about a declaration to end the Korean War, which is sought by Pyongyang.
The US State Department says the North Korean leader invited US inspectors to visit the Punggye-ri nuclear test site. The North says it dismantled the test site earlier this year.
US and North Korean negotiators also agreed to form a working group. This indicates that challenges still remain unresolved such as how to proceed with denuclearization.
Pompeo said his visit to Pyongyang was "another step forward" to denuclearization. He added that he had a "good, productive conversation" with the North Korean leader but that more still needed to be done.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says he raised the issue of North Korea's abductions of Japanese nationals when he met the North's leader, Kim Jong Un, on Sunday.
Pompeo spoke with the media in Seoul, South Korea, on Monday.
He said a key pillar of the statement between Kim and US President Donald Trump was that the 2 countries will have better ties and fundamentally change the nature of North Korea's relationship with the world.
Pompeo said many issues, including the abductions, will need to be addressed to achieve the goal. He said he thinks Kim fully understands that.
Pompeo also referred to Kim's invitation for US inspectors to the Punggye-ri nuclear test site.
Pyongyang says it dismantled the site earlier this year.
Pompeo expressed willingness to send experts to the site as soon as they are ready.

The ministerial meeting of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development, or TICAD, has closed, stressing the importance of taking the financial conditions of aid recipient nations into account.
The results of the 2-day gathering in the Japanese capital were announced on Sunday. A TICAD summit-level meeting will take place in Yokohama next August.
The ministers agreed on the importance of ensuring the fiscal health and loan repayment capability of recipient nations as steps toward sustainable development.
Analysts say some countries may have excessive debts due to large loans extended by China for massive infrastructure projects.
The ministers said their nations will accelerate efforts to improve the business environment to attract investment from the public and private sectors.
They also agreed their countries will work harder to enhance agricultural productivity, diversify industries and realize maritime order based on the rule of law.
Japan's Foreign Minister Taro Kono, who chaired the meeting, spoke to reporters. He stressed that Japan will promote quality infrastructure projects with transparency.
Kono said Japan and China are considering economic cooperation in third countries and that the 2 nations may work together if they have projects that meet standards in Africa.

A UN climate panel says the average temperature worldwide is likely to rise 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels by as early as 2030.
On Monday, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, or IPCC, released a report on the impact of 1.5 degrees of global warming.
The report says human activities have pushed up the planet's average temperature by about one degree since the pre-industrial era. It predicts that, at the current pace, the difference will widen to 1.5 degrees between 2030 and 2052.
The report says this is highly likely to result in more scorching days in many areas as well as heavier rain in some places.
The report says the risks of these events will rise further if the temperature difference grows to 2 degrees. To cap warming at 1.5 degrees, it stresses the need for cutting carbon dioxide emissions to "net zero" by around 2050 by using renewable energy as well as mechanisms for capturing the greenhouse gas.
IPCC Chair, Lee Hoe-sung, told reporters that society will be required to make unprecedented changes, but that containing the warming at 1.5 degrees is possible.
