Japanese Defense Minister Takeshi Iwaya and US Defense Secretary James Mattis have agreed that their countries will work with other nations to address China's increasing activities in the East and South China seas.

Iwaya and Mattis held talks on Friday in Singapore on the sidelines of a meeting of the defense ministers of the Asia-Pacific region.

Iwaya said the Self-Defense Force vessels, including a submarine, conducted a drill around the South China Sea as part of Japan's Free and Open Indo-Pacific Strategy.

Mattis appreciated Japan's response and they reaffirmed cooperation with countries in the region to ensure the rule of law and freedom of navigation in the East and South China seas.

The United States and China are increasingly at odds as Beijing is using military force to try to change the status quo in the seas.

Iwaya also referred to relocation of the US Marine Corps Futenma air station to the less populated Henoko district in Okinawa Prefecture. He said that the government has taken a legal action to resume reclamation work which has been suspended due to local challenges.

Iwaya asked the US side to ensure the safe operation of American forces in Japan and try harder to make the case to local authorities and residents.

The defense ministers of Japan, the United States and South Korea have agreed to work closely together to implement the UN sanctions against North Korea.

Japanese Defense Minister Takeshi Iwaya, US Defense Secretary James Mattis and South Korean Defense Minister Jeong Kyeong-doo held trilateral talks in Singapore on Friday. They are in the country to join a meeting of the defense ministers of the Asia-Pacific region.

Iwaya said defense officials of the 3 countries should work closely to support their diplomatic authorities for the full implementation of the UN Security Council sanctions against the North.

Mattis said the US will work for the complete and verifiable denuclearization of the North. He also stressed efforts to prevent the North from evading UN sanctions through illegal ship-to-ship transfers of goods at sea are helping negotiations with the North.

Jeong said that South Korea wants to work with Japan and the US to totally denuclearize the Korean Peninsula and to realize a peaceful North Korea.

Mattis also said the US will not condone China's militarization of the South China Sea.

US Defense Secretary James Mattis says the United States, Japan and South Korea should coordinate policies in dealing with China's ongoing militarization of the South China Sea.

Mattis met his Japanese and South Korean counterparts in Singapore on Friday. He's visiting the country to attend a regional security conference and other meetings.

Quoting from a speech made by US Vice President Mike Pence this month, Mattis said the US will conduct the freedom of navigation mission wherever it is allowed under international law, and the US will never be intimidated or stand down.

He also expressed hope to strengthen the unity of the 3 democratic nations to closely coordinate moves toward achieving the common goal of creating a peaceful, open and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.

Japanese Defense Minister Takeshi Iwaya agreed with Mattis, saying Japan will also work to step up the 3-way cooperation.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has pledged that Japan will play a leading role in strengthening a trade system "based on free and fair rules."

Abe addressed the summit of the Asia-Europe Meeting, at a time when trade tension has been escalating between the US and China.

Leaders from over 50 countries and organizations in both regions gathered for the ASEM summit in Brussels.

Abe said that protectionism is spreading, warning that no country will benefit from unilateral measures to restrict trade. He also called for action to eliminate practices that distort markets.

Abe said Japan will lead efforts to reform the World Trade Organization, including its monitoring and dispute-settlement functions.

He said creating a society that's committed to recycling will be a theme for the G20 summit scheduled for next year in Japan. He called for measures to deal with plastic waste.

President Donald Trump is touting his own success in attracting Japanese investment to the US. His remarks come in a tweet ahead of midterm elections next month.

Trump said that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has been working with him to help balance out what he calls the "one-sided trade with Japan."

He attached a chart showing investment by Japanese carmakers and other manufacturers.

The chart says the companies have announced the creation of 37,000 jobs in the US since Trump took office in January 2017.

Trump called this "just the beginning," indicating his intention to seek more investment as part of efforts to slash America's trade deficit with Japan.

Japan's Ground Self-Defense Force and India's army are set to stage their first joint exercises.

GSDF officials say about 30 personnel from each side will train at a facility in India from October 27th to November 18th.

They are to focus on counterterrorism operations, handling improvised bombs and rescuing hostages.

The drills are based on the outcome of a Japan-India summit held in September last year.

They're apparently aimed at highlighting the 2 countries' cooperation in light of China's aggressive maritime activity.

GSDF units are getting more opportunities to train with troops from countries other than the United States, a longtime security partner.

The force held its first drills with the British army in Japan early this month.

A Japanese firm that has admitted to falsifying data for potentially substandard seismic dampers has identified 70 of the affected buildings.

The KYB group and its subsidiary earlier this week acknowledged that they had manipulated the test results for the earthquake shock absorbers over several years.

Officials revealed on Friday that out of the 70 named buildings, 28 are fitted with shock absorbers that came with falsified data.

Out of those 28, 11 of the structures are fitted with dampers that do not meet the government standard. The structures include local government offices in Aichi and Osaka prefectures, and a central government office in Tokyo.

Dampers installed in the other 17 structures do not meet contractual standards that KYB promised to its clients.

Officials say the remaining 42 structures have dampers whose data may have been falsified, but they do not have enough information to say conclusively.

The organizing committee for the Tokyo Paralympics has announced the outline of event schedules for the 2020 Games.

The Paralympics will open on August 25th, about 2 weeks after the Olympic Games come to a close. They will run for 13 days, finishing on September 6th. Athletes will compete in 540 events in 22 sports.

The events will start on the day after the opening ceremony. Swimming, table tennis and goalball will be held every day until 2 days before the closing ceremony.

Wheelchair rugby matches will start the day after the opening ceremony, and the finals are scheduled for the first Sunday of the Paralympics. Japan won its first-ever gold medal at this year's Wheelchair Rugby World Championship.

Judo will be held in the first half of the Paralympics. Japan is aiming to win gold for the first time in 8 years.

The finals for wheelchair tennis will be held in the latter half of the Paralympics. Shingo Kunieda and Yui Kamiji, who have already qualified for the Games, are aiming to win gold.

The finals for wheelchair basketball, and the men's and women's marathons, are scheduled for the closing day.

In view of the hot weather, the organizing committee has decided to start some events earlier in the day than they took place at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Paralympics. The marathons will start at 7 AM and triathlons at 8 AM. Archery will be held in the evening.

The organizing committee is due to decide further details later this year.
