Ministers from 16 Asia-Pacific countries met in Singapore on Saturday for a new round of talks on the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership free trade pact.

The parties to the potential deal, including Japan, China, India and the members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, have been in negotiations for 5 years.

The latest discussions are focused on 18 topics, which include reducing and removing tariffs, protecting intellectual property rights, and loosening rules on investment.

The countries agreed at a meeting in August to aim for a "substantial conclusion" on the pact by the end of the year.
But some of them, notably Japan, China and India, remain at odds on tariffs, investment rules, and other matters.

The deal would take in half of the world's population and account for 30 percent of global gross domestic product and trade volume.

The accelerating talks are taking place against a backdrop of protectionist policymaking in the United States.

Tokyo's new wholesale market has opened its doors to the public for the first time. Visitors to Toyosu market can now see the fishmongers and auctioneers in action.

The public is allowed to walk through paned walkways in the building that replaced the famous Tsukiji market.

People posed for photos on Saturday with the small forklift trucks used in the market.

Visitors formed long lines for shops offering sushi and Japanese-style omelets called tamagoyaki.

One elementary school girl said she came because she was studying fish and the fish industry in school. She said that the new place is bigger and cleaner than Tsukiji market was.

A 20-year-old man who lives nearby said he wanted to see the market and hopes it will help the area attract more people.

The Toyosu market is open to public from 5 AM to 5 PM from Monday to Saturday except for national holidays and occasional closed days.

The tuna auctions that were a big attraction at Tsukiji can be viewed from the walkways. Visitors will be allowed to watch on the auction floor from January 15th next year.

Japanese Finance Minister Taro Aso says Japan will offer support to rebuild the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, which was hit hard by a powerful earthquake and tsunami last month.

Indonesian officials say 2,090 people have been confirmed dead following the September 28th quake. They say more than 80,000 people remain displaced.

The earthquake triggered a tsunami, liquefaction and landslides, resulting in widespread damage.

Aso spoke to reporters on Friday after a meeting of the finance ministers and central bank governors of the Group of 20 nations in Bali, Indonesia.

Aso said the Japanese government is ready to dispatch a team to help rebuild affected areas in Sulawesi. He said the mission will be organized by the Japan International Cooperation Agency, or JICA.

Aso also said he hopes to utilize Japan's knowledge and technologies to develop Indonesia's disaster management measures.

Business leaders in the United States and Europe are reassessing their relations with Saudi Arabia in the wake of the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

A harsh critic of the Saudi government, Khashoggi went missing after entering the Saudi consulate in the Turkish city of Istanbul earlier this month.

It's strongly suspected he was killed inside the building.

Turkey and Saudi Arabia have formed a joint working group to investigate the case. But the consulate's compound enjoys diplomatic immunity and has yet to be searched.

Britain-based Virgin Group announced on Thursday that it will suspend discussions on proposed Saudi investments in its space businesses.

Media companies, including CNN and The New York Times in the United States, have cancelled their partnerships with an economic forum led by Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Saudi Arabia has called for support from Japan and Western nations for its economic reforms. But analysts say that the handling of the case could dampen foreign investment into the kingdom.

A Turkish court ruling on Friday secured the release of a US pastor under house arrest on accusations of being involved in an attempted military coup.

Andrew Brunson was arrested and charged over alleged links to the Turkish military's failed coup in 2016.

A court in the western Turkish city of Izmir on Friday sentenced Brunson up to 3 years and one month in prison.

But the court said the pastor need not serve any further time as he has already spent 2 years in detention.

Hours after the ruling, Brunson left his house and boarded a plane for his return home to the US.

Brunson's arrest has been at the center of strained relations between Ankara and Washington.

In August, US President Donald Trump's administration doubled steel and aluminum tariffs on Turkish imports. Turkey retaliated with its own tariffs on US products.

The US move led to the nosedive of the Turkish lira and caused the decline of other currencies in emerging economies, as well as a fall of global stocks.

Trump had said he would impose additional sanctions against Turkey unless the pastor is released.

Trump tweeted on Friday following the Turkish court's ruling that his administration is "working very hard" on the Brunson case.

Facebook says a recent security breach affected about 29 million user accounts, fewer than the 50 million it initially reported.

The company announced on Friday that hackers stole names, phone numbers and other data. In the case of 14 million users, the hackers also accessed details about their employment and hometown. The company said it will notify everyone who was affected.

A senior Facebook official said in a conference call with reporters that the Federal Bureau of Investigation is looking into the issue. The official said the hackers' motivations remain unknown.

Facebook said last month that the attackers stole digital keys that allow users to access their accounts without re-entering their password. It said it had fixed the vulnerability.

Facebook has 2.2 billion users worldwide. It did not say which countries were affected in the latest incident.

French novelist Maryse Conde has been awarded a prize that's been described as an alternative Nobel Prize.

The New Academy Prize in Literature was created by Swedish journalists and authors as a one-time-only prize after this year's Nobel literature prize was postponed due to a sexual harassment scandal.

Four writers were named on a shortlist, including Japan's Haruki Murakami. But Murakami withdrew last month, saying he wants to concentrate on his writing.

Conde, from the French Caribbean territory of Guadeloupe, was named the winner on Friday.

Her works include historical fiction set in Africa.

Conde said that she is very happy and proud to win the prize.

She also said she wants to share it with people in Guadeloupe, which is only mentioned when it is hit by hurricanes or earthquakes.

The Swedish Academy, which awards the Nobel Prize in Literature, has not said whether it will issue the honor next year.
