The islands of Okinawa in southern Japan are bracing for more winds strong enough to knock down houses from Typhoon Maysak.

In the prefectural capital of Naha, police say the wall of a building was ripped off and carried away. Two cars parked nearby were damaged.

Officials say a total of four people have been slightly injured by the winds.

Residents called Naha's fire department after buildings had their roofs blown off.

Over 30,000 households in Okinawa had no power as of 11 a.m. Tuesday morning.
More than 250 flights have been canceled. Many bus and ferry services are not operating.

Typhoon Maysak is moving away from the main island of the prefecture but weather officials are urging caution for strong winds, high waves and storm surges.
The typhoon is expected to pick up strength and head north over waters west of the Kyushu region through Thursday.

A delegation from Israel has flown to the United Arab Emirates on the first direct commercial flight between the countries for negotiations on normalizing relations.

The plane carrying the Israeli group and US officials, including President Donald Trump's son-in-law and senior advisor Jared Kushner, took off from Tel Aviv on Monday.

The aircraft crossed the airspace of Saudi Arabia -- with which Israel has no diplomatic ties -- on the way to the capital of the UAE, Abu Dhabi. Its fuselage bore the word for "peace" in Hebrew, Arabic, and English.

Upon arrival there, Kushner said, "There are tremendous amount of common opportunities between the countries, and it's within the interest of both countries to move forward."
The Israeli delegates revealed that they started discussions with their counterparts on the opening of embassies and other topics like visas.

Prior to the talks, NHK had an exclusive interview with Jamal Musharakh, director of policy planning at the UAE's foreign ministry.

Musharakh said the negotiations will be very specific, including aviation, culture, economics, and finance. He said, "The discussions are on how to enhance the cooperation and enhance partnership on those issues."

Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh criticized the arrival of the Israeli airplane in the UAE. He said it was a clear violation of a Middle East peace deal that rejects the normalization of ties with Israel unless the Israeli occupation comes to an end.

Shtayyeh said Palestinians were deeply pained to see the violation.

Lebanon's president has appointed the country's ambassador to Germany, Mustapha Adib, as the next prime minister.

The previous government of Prime Minister Hassan Diab resigned last month amid mounting criticism over a devastating explosion in Beirut on August 4 that killed 190 people.

Adib said upon his appointment that "it is time to work with everyone's cooperation" to rebuild the country and have hope for the future.

Observers say the process of forming the new government has been accelerated to tackle the aftermath of the explosion and the country's serious financial problems.
But critics say Lebanon's various religious groups competing for their own interests will make it difficult for the new prime minister to form an effective government.

Adib earlier visited the area damaged by the explosion. He was surrounded by people, one of whom yelled "we don't recognize you."

China's top diplomat will visit Myanmar, Spain and Greece in an apparent bid to ease an increasing wariness toward Beijing over its response to the coronavirus and Hong Kong's pro-democracy protests.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said on Monday that Chinese Communist Party Political Bureau Member Yang Jiechi will visit the countries from Tuesday to Friday.

This follows his visit to Singapore and South Korea in August.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is currently on a European tour that takes him to Italy, France and Germany, among others. This is the foreign minister's first overseas trip since the coronavirus outbreak began.

China is ramping up its diplomatic efforts at a time when its confrontation with the United States is becoming more intense.

The Chinese government representatives' visits to those countries are seen as an attempt by China to shore up ties with them, amid a growing unease toward Beijing worldwide.

China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi has denounced a visit to Taiwan by a Czech delegation, warning they will ''pay a heavy price'' for making themselves enemies of the Chinese people.

Czech Senate President Milos Vystrcil, arrived in Taipei on Sunday at the head of a delegation of about 90 people, including political and business leaders. Under the Czech constitution, the head of the Senate is the second-highest post after the president.

On Monday, Vystrcil attended an economic forum in Taipei and expressed hope that the two sides will deepen economic cooperation.

Speaking in Germany on Monday, Wang said China will "not sit idly by and let go of the open provocation of the Czech Senate speaker against China and anti-China forces behind it," in an apparent reference to the United States.

Wang said Taiwan is an inseparable part of Chinese territory and it is a breach of international trust to attempt to challenge the One China principle.

Earlier this month, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo expressed his support for the planned visit to Taiwan when he delivered a speech in the Czech parliament.

China does not accept countries with which it has diplomatic ties engaging in political exchanges with Taiwan. Beijing repeatedly expressed opposition to the Czech Senate President's plan to visit Taiwan.

Vystrcil is scheduled to give an address in the Taiwanese parliament on Tuesday.

An Australian anchor at China's state-run broadcaster's English channel has been detained in China. This could add more pressure to the already strained relations between Australia and China.

In a statement on Monday, Australia's foreign minister Marise Payne revealed that Cheng Lei had been detained by Chinese authorities.

The Chinese-born woman was reportedly working as an anchor for China Global Television Network, or CGTN, after becoming an Australian citizen. CGTN is the international division of China Central Television.

Payne said the Australian government was notified by Chinese authorities of Cheng's detention on August 14, and that a government official spoke to her via video link last Thursday.

The reasons for Cheng's detention, as well as her health, are still unclear.

Payne said the government will continue to provide assistance and support to her and her family.

Beijing reacted sharply to a call from Australia for an independent inquiry into the origins of the coronavirus. Tensions between the countries are also running high over developments in Hong Kong.

Japan's job market continues to feel the pinch from the coronavirus pandemic.
Data from the Internal Affairs Ministry show the jobless rate in July was 2.9 percent. That's up a bit from 2.8 percent a month earlier.

The ministry says the situation is much worse than it was a year ago because of the pandemic. In the same month last year, the figure was 2.2 percent.

There were also fewer jobs on offer in July, falling for the seventh straight month. The ratio of offers to applicants stood at 1.08, meaning there were 108 openings for every 100 job seekers.

And government officials say the number of job offers is still falling despite the economy picking up since the state of emergency was lifted in May.

A major Japanese mobile-phone carrier has developed a drone that can quickly restore service in areas hit by typhoons and other disasters.

SoftBank officials say their prototype can restore cell-phone connections within one hour of arriving at the scene. About 2,000 people within a 10-kilometer radius would be able to use their mobile devices at the same time. The drone can stay in the air for more than 50 hours.

The officials demonstrated another prototype for use in emergencies. It searches for missing people by tracking location data sent by their mobile phones. The craft can even pinpoint buried handsets. Workers would look at a monitor to verify the locations.

Rival Japanese carriers are also developing technologies that can quickly establish wireless communications at disaster sites.

The Olympic flame for the postponed Tokyo Games will be put on public view in a Tokyo museum, starting on Tuesday.

A ceremony marking the event was held on Monday at the Japan Olympic Museum in Shinjuku Ward.

The flame was brought to Japan from Greece in March. It has been kept in Tokyo after the torch relay in Japan was cancelled following the decision to put off the 2020 Games for one year.

Japanese Olympic Committee head Yamashita Yasuhiro said at the ceremony that athletes aiming to participate in the Olympic and Paralympic Games are training hard while under great stress. He added that he believes the Olympic flame will provide them emotional support.

Minister for Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games Hashimoto Seiko said the flame is a light of hope. She pledged that the government will do all it can to contain the spread of the coronavirus and successfully hold the Tokyo Games.

The flame will be displayed till November 1. Visitors need to make reservations.
