A man was removed from a domestic flight in Japan after refusing to wear a mask on the plane.

Carrier Hokkaido Air System says the crew spotted the man without a mask before takeoff on the flight from Okushiri Airport to Hakodate Airport in Hokkaido, northern Japan, at around noon on Saturday.

Airline officials say the crew asked him to wear a mask, but he refused. He gave no explanation for his refusal.

The captain decided to have the man removed from the plane after judging his behavior disruptive to order on the flight. Officials said it was not because the man refused to wear a mask, but due to the possibility he would hinder a safe flight based on his interaction with the cabin crew.

NHK interviewed the man and asked why he didn't wear a mask. He said that he felt sick and had rashes when he previously wore a mask. The man added that he refused to explain because he didn't want to talk about his health condition in front of other passengers.

The officials said the plane departed about half an hour behind schedule with 21 other passengers.

Airlines are asking passengers to wear masks as a preventive measure against the coronavirus.

On Monday, another domestic flight made an unscheduled landing in Niigata Airport on the Sea of Japan coast to remove a passenger who refused to wear a mask and threatened the cabin crew. The plane was heading from Kushiro in Hokkaido to Kansai Airport in western Japan.

British-based drug firm AstraZeneca says it has resumed clinical trials of a coronavirus vaccine following confirmation by British health authorities that it was safe to do so.

AstraZeneca released a statement on Saturday about the restart of its trials of the COVID-19 vaccine developed with Oxford University.

On September 6, the drug maker paused the vaccine trials around the world to allow an independent committee and UK regulators to conduct a review of safety data.

The firm said in the statement that the committee had concluded its investigations and informed the British health authorities that it is safe to resume trials in the UK.
AstraZeneca declined to disclose further details. But the company said it will continue to work with health authorities across the world so that other clinical trials can resume.

Following the announcement, AstraZeneca Japan is considering resuming vaccine trials in Japan. It says it will consult with relevant organizations as to when to restart the trials.

In August, the company and the Japanese government made a plan for the company to supply doses for at least 60 million people in Japan. It aims to make 15 million doses available by next March.

Voters in Russia are heading to the polls on Sunday to elect new regional leadership, including 18 governors and members of local parliaments and city councils.

The vote is set to be a key test for the country's ruling party following the suspected poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny. He had been calling on voters to rally behind most viable opposition candidates. Navalny had also been investigating alleged government corruption in the Siberian cities of Novosibirsk and Tomsk, where council elections are taking place.

Dissatisfaction is growing in Russia over the prolonged economic slowdown and the Putin administration's governing style. Anti-government protests are continuing in its Far Eastern region.

There are reports that Kremlin-backed candidates and ruling party candidates are facing an uphill battle in some regions.

Election results are expected by Monday night.

US President Donald Trump plans to visit the state of California, where wildfires continue on an unprecedented scale.

The White House announced the visit on Saturday, saying Trump will go to California on Monday and meet with emergency officials to get an idea of the extent of the fires.

Major wildfires have burned 1.25 million hectares of California's mountains, making them the worst fires in US history.

Similar fires have also occurred in the states of Oregon and Washington. Those fires have killed at least 22 people along the West coast.

Scientists say the main cause is ongoing climate change. There are growing calls in the region for stepping up measures to address the environmental problem.

With the US presidential election just two months away, Democratic candidate Joe Biden issued a statement on Saturday. He noted that Trump's denial of climate change "poses an imminent existential threat to our way of life."

Relatives of 12 Hong Kong pro-democracy activists detained at sea by Chinese authorities have called for their family members to be returned. The activists have been unaccounted for since their detention in late August.

Media in Hong Kong report that the activists aged between 16 and 33 were detained by China's Coast Guard officials on August 23 on suspicion of illegally entering Chinese waters while trying to head for Taiwan by boat from the territory.

The media report that those people had been out on bail after being arrested or charged with involvement in protests in the territory.

Media also report that one of the detainees, a 29-year-old man, was arrested last month, along with activist Agnes Chow, on suspicion of violating China's new national security law for Hong Kong.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, family members said Chinese authorities haven't allowed lawyers appointed by them to meet the detained people.

The families called on the international community to keep a watch on how the detainees will be treated.

The Hong Kong government says it will deal with the matter in cooperation with Chinese authorities.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo issued a statement, saying the US is deeply concerned that the Hong Kong activists have been denied access to lawyers of their choice.
