US President Donald Trump has admitted downplaying the threat of the coronavirus, saying he did not want to create a panic.

US media reported extracts from Trump's interviews with renowned journalist Bob Woodward and content from his book, soon to be published based on their conversations.

The report says Trump's aides briefed him in detail about the risks of the coronavirus in late January. In a telephone interview with Woodward on February 7, Trump was seemingly aware that the new virus was a greater threat to life than influenza.

But in news conferences the President continued to say the risks were low.

In an interview on March 19, Trump told Woodward that he deliberately played it down because he didn't want to create a panic.

Following media reports about his remarks, Trump reiterated on Wednesday that he did not want people to be frightened.

His administration is facing growing public criticism over its initial handling of the outbreak.

The Democratic challenger in November's presidential election, Joe Biden, lashed out at Trump for lying to the American people.

Biden said, "He knowingly and willingly lied about the true threat it posed to the country for months."

The US military says it will reduce US troop levels in Iraq from 5,200 to 3,000 this month.

Central Command, which oversees the US military in the Middle East, announced the reduction on Wednesday.

White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany told reporters the drawdown was possible because US troops had done a "magnificent job" training Iraqi security forces to keep the country stable.

There have been growing calls in Iraq for the withdrawal of US troops ever since a US drone strike killed an Iranian Revolutionary Guards general and an Iraqi militia commander in Baghdad in early January.

The Iraqi government has been in talks with US officials to reduce their military presence in the country.

US President Donald Trump, known for his "America First" policy, has pledged to bring home US forces stationed abroad. He is expected also to announce a reduction of US troops in Afghanistan.

Observers say Trump aims to underscore his achievements ahead of November's presidential election. But there are concerns that lowering US troop numbers could destabilize the Middle East.

Russia's presidential office spokesperson has expressed hope that the successor of Japan's Prime Minister Abe Shinzo will remain committed to boosting ties with Moscow to resolve the issue involving Russian-controlled islands claimed by Japan.

Dmitry Peskov spoke to the state-run Tass news agency about peace treaty negotiations that will continue under a new Japanese leader. Abe has announced his intention to step down to deal with health issues.

Peskov said Abe had focused on the goal of resolving the issue of the islands and signing a peace treaty. He noted the prime minister tried to settle the complicated issue through continued dialogue.

Russia controls the islands. Japan claims them. The Japanese government maintains the islands are an inherent part of Japan's territory. It says the islands were illegally occupied after World War Two.

Tokyo and Moscow have yet to sign a peace treaty 75 years after the end of the war with the territorial issue left unresolved.

Peskov said it is not yet clear how negotiations on a peace treaty will proceed under a new Japanese prime minister, but expressed hope that Japan will keep following the direction of developing relations with Russia to resolve disagreements over the islands.

Observers believe the Kremlin referred to the territorial issue to stress its stance on continued talks with Japan amid souring ties with Western countries.

Russia has been at odds with the West since it annexed Crimea in 2014. Recently, relations took a hit after the suspected poisoning of a Russian opposition activist.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has accused the United States of becoming the most dangerous factor damaging peace in the South China Sea.

The Foreign Ministry on Wednesday disclosed Wang's comments at the East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers' meeting, held online.

The United States has repeatedly conducted drills in the South China Sea involving two US aircraft carriers.

Wang said the United States has interfered with the efforts of China and Association of Southeast Asian Nations member states to resolve disputes through consultation, as well as provoking confrontation between countries in the region.

He reiterated China's claims that territorial disputes in the region can be resolved only by the countries involved.

He said China hopes countries outside the region, including the United States, will fully respect the wishes and expectations of countries in the region instead of creating tension and seeking to profit from it.

Japan's Foreign Minister has expressed concern over China's advances in the South China Sea at the East Asia Summit with his counterparts.

Motegi Toshimitsu took part in the online meeting held late Wednesday, Japan time. The event was attended by foreign ministers of the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations, as well as Japan, China, the United States, Russia and others.

Motegi said he is concerned that unilateral efforts to change the status quo have continued. He urged concerned nations, including China and the United States, to take constructive action to address the situation.

Regarding China's proposal that a Code of Conduct in the South China Sea be drawn up, Motegi said the code must not infringe on the interests of third countries.

He added it must be consistent with the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

Foreign ministers of the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations will have a meeting via a video link on Wednesday. They are expected to issue a statement aimed at addressing escalating tensions in the South China Sea.

Their key topics will include the disputed sea, which is claimed by China, Taiwan and some ASEAN members.

The United States has expressed a view that that Beijing's maritime claims across most of the South China Sea are "completely unlawful."

The two countries have been trading accusations over each other's actions in the region.

In July, the US Navy deployed aircraft carriers to the sea. In the following month, the Chinese military test-fired ballistic missiles toward the sea.

A draft joint statement obtained by NHK expresses the member states' concerns over the land reclamations, activities and serious incidents in the area, which have eroded trust and confidence, and increased tensions.

Later this week, the East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers' meeting and the ASEAN Regional Forum will be held. The US and China are expected to take part in the two events.

The Chinese government has disclosed that Australian intelligence officers searched the residences of state media reporters from China in late June.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian told reporters on Wednesday the four journalists represented state-run outlets including Xinhua News Agency and China Central Television.

He said they were questioned by the Australian Security Intelligence Organization, and that their laptops and cell phones were seized.

The spokesperson said the Australian government has not provided a reasonable explanation for the move, and that China asks Australia "to immediately stop such blatant irrational behaviors" and "stop harassing and oppressing Chinese personnel in Australia."

He also said China has repeatedly lodged stern protests with Canberra.

Relations between the two countries soured after an Australian journalist for CCTV was detained in China last month.

Also, two Australian reporters were temporarily barred from leaving China this month.

Britain says it has held its first talks with all the countries of the Trans-Pacific Partnership to explore joining the free-trade group.

The UK government called its participation in the meeting a "major step toward membership". It added it would enter into a formal accession negotiation with the 11 member states if it decides to apply.

International Trade Secretary Elizabeth Truss said in a statement that membership would "bring new opportunities for our go-getting businesses." She added it would also produce more choice for British consumers and provide "greater economic security."

The UK has been trying to build strong economic ties with countries outside the European Union since it left the bloc in January.

Britain is also looking to seal a new economic partnership agreement with Japan, a leading member of the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

French firm LVMH says it is scrapping plans to buy US jeweler Tiffany for $16 billion. The deal was set to be the biggest-ever in the global luxury industry.

LVMH said on Wednesday that France's government asked it to hold off on the deal after Washington threatened to slap taxes on French goods.

Headquartered in Paris, LVMH owns designer fashion brands such as Louis Vuitton and Bulgari.

It agreed to buy iconic jeweler Tiffany late last year to get a bigger foothold in the US. The deal was due to complete this November.

But coronavirus lockdowns hit demand for luxury goods, and, in June, LVMH said it was reviewing the deal.

A legal battle looks like the next step. Tiffany has already filed a lawsuit in the US to try to force the deal to go ahead.
