Trading resumed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange on Friday after it was halted by a technical glitch for all of Thursday.
Trading kicked off here at the usual time of 9 AM, bringing some relief to market participants who were unable to execute trades on Thursday.
The benchmark Nikkei Average ended the morning session slightly higher compared to Wednesday's close.
TSE officials said Thursday's glitch was triggered by a hardware failure in the system. Switching to a backup device also failed, making it impossible for market information to be relayed.
The TSE replaced the equipment that caused the failure and confirmed that there was no problem with the trading system.
Local exchanges in Nagoya, Fukuoka, and Sapporo also reopened after a hiatus the previous day. They use the same system as Tokyo to execute trades.
Japan is the only major market in Asia open at the beginning of October. Exchanges in mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea are closed for autumn holidays.
Foreign investors account for more than 70 percent of annual turnover in Tokyo.
The disruption is likely to raise concern over the reliability of Asia's largest exchange, when Japan is aiming to become the region's leading financial hub.

The presidents of the United States, Russia and France have called for an immediate ceasefire between Azerbaijan and Armenia in their latest round of deadly fighting over a disputed territory.
US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin and French President Emmanuel Macron issued a joint statement on Thursday. The three countries have served as mediators in the decades-old dispute over the Nagorno-Karabakh region.
The statement says the presidents "condemn in the strongest terms the recent escalation of violence along the line of contact in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone."
It urges Azerbaijan and Armenia to "commit without delay to resuming substantive negotiations, in good faith and without preconditions."
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been clear in his support for Azerbaijan. He said on Thursday that "given that the USA, Russia and France have neglected this problem for nearly 30 years, it is unacceptable that they are involved in a search for a ceasefire."
A fresh round of clashes between the forces of Azerbaijan and neighboring Armenia have continued since Sunday. The death toll now stands at 130.
The dispute between the two former Soviet republics has continued for over 30 years. The Nagorno-Karabakh region lies in Azerbaijan, but it is mainly populated by ethnic Armenians.

Hong Kong police arrested more than 80 people for alleged participation in illegal gatherings and other offenses on Thursday, the 71st anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.
A pro-democracy group organizes a protest march every year to coincide with China's National Day, but police rejected the application for a march this year, citing the risk of coronavirus infection.
Still, many people responded to calls for protests on social media and gathered in the downtown area of Hong Kong Island on Thursday. They called for independence and freedom for Hong Kong.
Authorities deployed about 6,000 police officers, who checked protesters' belongings and credentials of reporters covering the rally.
Police officers repeatedly ordered them to leave immediately, and there were scenes in which officers got into quarrels with some citizens. Police said they arrested 86 people including four district council members.
Earlier in the day, a ceremony to observe the anniversary was held by the Hong Kong government. Chief Executive Carrie Lam noted that three months have passed since the national security law for Hong Kong took effect. She stressed the need for social stability in the development of Hong Kong.
The national security law has led to a sharp drop in the number of large demonstrations and rallies. But public frustration against the governments of mainland China and Hong Kong remains unabated, with sporadic protests continuing.

Hundreds of millions of people are expected to travel within China during the country's National Day holiday that began on Thursday.
Domestic sightseeing spots are popular destinations during the eight-day holiday as the global coronavirus pandemic has made overseas trips difficult.
A major trip reservation website says an estimated 600 million domestic trips will be made during the holiday.
A high-speed rail station in Shanghai was crowded on Thursday with people going on vacation or heading back to their hometowns.
A man on his way to visit his relatives in Anhui Province says he is not worried about the virus as China has contained it.
He says making an overseas trip is difficult, but a domestic one is safer.
Many local governments are offering travel subsidies to help revive demand for domestic tourism.
Train tickets to cities with popular tourist spots are said to be almost fully booked during the period.
The city of Wuhan, the initial epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak, is among popular destinations.
A travel reservation website says its analysis shows Huanghelou, or the Yellow Crane Tower, in Wuhan is the most popular destination during the holiday.
Many tourists visited the tower on Thursday morning and took photos at places that command a good view of the city.
Wuhan was in effective lockdown for two and a half months until April due to the outbreak.
But local authorities are now stressing that they have successfully contained it with measures including virus tests covering about 9.9 million residents.
The city also made entries to tourists spots free of charge after the lockdown was lifted as a step to attract visitors.

North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un and his sister Kim Yo Jong have inspected sites that were rebuilt after being damaged by heavy rain and typhoons in August.
The ruling Workers' Party newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, reported on Friday that Kim visited the sites in the eastern province of Kangwon accompanied by aides and his younger sister. The area was hit hard by a typhoon in August, with more than 1,000 houses destroyed.
The report says Kim praised the army and its soldiers who took part in the reconstruction work. He is quoted as saying, "This year has been one of unprecedented hardships , but it will be a year with particularly great worth of struggle."
His show of appreciation comes after people in North Korea took a heavy hit from three typhoons that made landfall in August and September.
Photos carried on the front page of the newspaper showed Kim Yo Jong standing and walking a few steps behind her brother.
It was her first public appearance since July.

The European Union has launched legal action against the United Kingdom over the country's plan to override part of their Brexit withdrawal agreement.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Thursday that the UK plan "by its very nature is a breach of the obligation of good faith laid down in the Withdrawal Agreement."
She said the commission decided to send a letter of formal notice to the UK government. If it doesn't receive a satisfactory response within a month, it may refer the matter to the bloc's top court.
The UK left the EU in January. The withdrawal agreement ensures that EU rules will apply to trade between Northern Ireland, which is part of the UK, and the Republic of Ireland, an EU member.
But the UK bill would grant the government the power to set regulations if it and the EU fail to reach an agreement in their free trade talks.
The EU says the legislation violates international law. The bloc demanded that the UK government retract the contentious sections of the bill by Wednesday.
But London refused, and the country's lower house of parliament passed the bill on Tuesday. The legislation is now up for debate in the upper chamber.
Negotiators from the UK and the EU held their final round of talks this week over post-Brexit relations in free trade and other areas.

Le Drian said that he wants to promote bilateral cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.
The ministers agreed that the two countries will work together in the response to the coronavirus and will prepare for the world after the crisis.
They agreed that their nations will play a key role as Group of Seven members in restoring the world economy and forming a new international order in the post-coronavirus world.
They also agreed to further promote security cooperation, such as joint exercises between Japan's Self-Defense Forces and the French military, and to cooperate on issues regarding North Korea.

Japan's Defense Ministry plans to enhance its electronic warfare capability by creating six specialized units across the country.
Electronic warfare involves monitoring and jamming enemy radio communications and radars.
The Ground Self-Defense Force will build the new units during the next fiscal year, which ends in March 2022. An electronic warfare unit has already been established in Hokkaido and another one will be set up this fiscal year in Kumamoto Prefecture with about 80 personnel.
A headquarters unit will be placed at Camp Asaka, which straddles Tokyo and Saitama prefectures. The new units will be located across the country in areas such as the northern prefecture of Hokkaido and southwestern prefecture of Okinawa.
The units will monitor electromagnetic waves emitted by foreign aircraft and vessels around Japan. This information will be systematically analyzed.
The units will also be equipped with jamming capability to respond in the event of a contingency.

Data compiled by Japanese police show the number of suicides among young women has been increasing sharply.
The National Police Agency says 1,854 people committed suicide across the country in August. This was a rise by 251, or 16 percent, from the same month last year.
The number of female suicides soared 40 percent, compared with a 6 percent rise in men.
The figure was especially high among women in their 30s or younger, with 193 taking their lives. This was an increase of 74 percent.
A 25-year-old welfare worker who attempted suicide in the past wrote in a social media post in July that she wants to die.
The woman says the coronavirus pandemic has disrupted her lifestyle and those of people around her, leaving them feeling depressed.
She says she wants people to stay connected to their friends and family members and try to look out for signs that may indicate that they are considering suicide.
Takahashi Satomi, a visiting fellow at Chuo University's Institute of Cultural Sciences, is an expert on the issue who says the overall rise in the number of suicides may be partly due to job losses and other effects of the pandemic.
Takahashi says young women may have relatively few opportunities to seek advice from someone outside of their families because they tend to stay at home to raise children and do household chores, which cause stress. She also notes that women tend to be more sensitive about diseases and other issues.
Takahashi says the government needs to identify the cause of the increase in female suicides as soon as possible and improve consultation and other systems.
