Japanese weather officials say a typhoon now situated over the Pacific just south of Japan will likely approach the country's western and eastern regions.
Meteorological Agency officials say that as of 5 a.m. on Friday, Typhoon Chan-hom was at sea some 270 kilometers south of Kochi Prefecture.
They estimate the storm is moving north at about 10 kilometers per hour, packing maximum winds of 126 kilometers per hour near its center.
The officials expect Chan-hom will approach western Japan on Saturday before nearing eastern Japan later in the day and into Sunday.
The officials are calling on people to stay vigilant for strong winds and high waves as well as mudslides, floods in low-lying areas, and swollen rivers.

US authorities say 13 people have been charged with conspiring to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer.
FBI and state officials said on Thursday that the 13 are members of two armed extremist groups that oppose the Democratic governor.
The criminal complaints alleges that one group aimed to carry out its plans before next month's presidential election, and the other wanted to attack law enforcement officers and instigate a civil war.
Whitmer said at a news conference that the groups are white supremacists.
She referred to remarks by President Donald Trump during last month's presidential debate in which he told a far-right group to "stand back and stand by."
She said hate groups heard Trump's words not as a rebuke, but as a call to action.
In April, demonstrators took to the streets in Michigan after Whitmer introduced severe restrictions to halt the spread of the coronavirus. Some armed protesters entered the statehouse.
Trump had shown his support for the protests several days earlier, tweeting "Liberate Michigan," and continued to criticize Whitmer.

US President Donald Trump says he wants to expedite authorization for the emergency use of the antibody medication that he took to treat his coronavirus infection.
Trump hailed the new drug on Thursday in a video message on Twitter, saying "We are making tremendous progress."
The medication, which is a cocktail of antibodies being developed by the US pharmaceutical firm Regeneron, is still in clinical trials, and has yet to be authorized by the Food and Drug Administration.
He called the coronavirus a "horrible disease that was sent over by China," and that "China will pay a big price."
He said he was very sick when he went into the hospital a week ago, but that he could have walked out the day after he took the medicine, saying it had an incredible impact.
He said he is ready to make the drug and other similar ones available immediately and will make them free of charge for seniors.
Regeneron said on Wednesday that it submitted a request to US authorities for an emergency use authorization.
Trump's move is seen as an attempt to show leadership amid criticism over the spread of the virus in the administration ahead of the presidential election in early November.
Meanwhile, the White House has released a memo from Trump's physician, who said the president had completed his course of therapy for the coronavirus.
The doctor said Trump remained stable and could return to public engagements on Saturday, the tenth day since he was diagnosed. He said Trump had responded extremely well to treatment.

A credit research firm says nearly 4,000 companies in Japan went bankrupt between April and September. It says the number was actually down from the same period last year as some firms were able to secure government aid amid the pandemic.
Teikoku Databank says a total of 3,956 companies with debts of at least 10-million yen began legal liquidation procedures in the first half of the fiscal year.
That's a drop of 5.2 percent from the same period in 2019.
The researchers say the bankruptcy figure fell below 4,000 for the first time since the second half of fiscal year of 2004.
They say government support packages to deal with the coronavirus, such as interest-free and unsecured loans, helped prevent bankruptcies.
Looking at bankruptcies directly linked to the impact of the coronavirus, the research firm says 598 firms went under between February and October 8.
The researchers warn there is still a risk that bankruptcies will rise if the firms that sought financial assistance cannot recover their profitability.

Tens of thousands of people across Indonesia have taken to the streets to protest a new law they say threatens labor rights. Some demonstrators in the capital clashed with police.
Protesters, including labor organization members and students, gathered near the presidential palace and other important facilities in Jakarta on Thursday.
Police fired tear gas to disperse the crowds. Some demonstrators became violent, hurling stones and setting fire to police posts and other facilities.
A police spokesperson says about 1,000 protesters were detained in Jakarta.
The protests erupted after parliament enacted the controversial law on Monday. The government of President Joko Widodo says the legislation will help attract foreign investment to the country through a review of labor standards.
But labor groups are demanding the law be repealed. They say it undermines workers' rights by cutting severance pay and shifting wage calculation from monthly to hourly.

The head of the international governing body for track and field sports has inspected the main stadium for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, in his first visit to Japan since the Games were postponed to next year.
World Athletics President Sebastian Coe visited the National Stadium in Tokyo on Thursday, escorted by members of the Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Coe commented that the stadium is sustainable and beautifully designed, and it will encourage athletes to perform at their highest level.
He said, "While we do not know for sure what will happen in the next few months, we are absolutely committed to working with the Organising Committee for the delivery of a fantastic Games."
He went on to say that there may have to be some adaptations, and there may need to be some changes. He said, "We will adapt, and we will also be supportive of the Organising Committee in anything that we need to do to make sure that athletics is the center stage in the Olympic Games."
Later in the day, Coe met with the president of the Tokyo Organising Committee, Mori Yoshiro. Coe proposed that the National Stadium should be used as the venue for the world track and field championships. He expressed hope that this will happen during his 10-year tenure as the president of World Athletics.
Coe won Olympic gold medals in the men's 1,500 meters in 1980 and 1984. He was the president of the Organizing Committee for the 2012 London Olympics and Paralympics. Coe has been a member of the International Olympic Committee since July.
