Republican Vice President Mike Pence and Democratic vice-presidential candidate Kamala Harris have squared off in a televised debate.
The coronavirus pandemic dominated the discussion. Harris condemned the Trump administration's response to the public health crisis by calling it "the greatest failure of any presidential administration." She said "on January 28, the vice president and the president were informed about the nature of this pandemic." She added "And they knew what was happening, and they didn't tell you."
In response, Pence pointed to the president's decision to ban most travel from China. He said the decision bought invaluable time. He also said "And I believe it saved hundreds of thousands of American lives."
The 90-minute event took place in the western state of Utah, where coronavirus cases are on the rise. Organizers took additional precautions, after President Donald Trump and several of his top advisors were infected.
The two also discussed the economy, climate change and the Black Lives Matter movement.
With less than a month to go until the November 3rd vote, opinion polls suggest that Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden has a significant lead.

US President Donald Trump has said he would push for distribution of the antibody medication that he claims made him feel better during his hospitalization for COVID-19.
Trump on Wednesday posted a video message on Twitter for the first time since he left hospital on Monday.
He noted that he felt he was ill when he entered hospital, but claims his condition improved as soon as he received the antibody cocktail. He said, "I feel great, like, perfect."
The medication being developed by the US pharmaceutical firm Regeneron is still in clinical trials, and has yet to be authorized by the Food and Drug Administration.
Trump said, "I want to get for you what I got. And I'm going to make it free."
He also described his coronavirus infection as a "blessing from God" as it shed light on the antibody cocktail.
He suggested that he will make the best of his experience, apparently aiming to dodge criticism over his handling of the outbreak.
Trump had earlier said a coronavirus vaccine would be available as early as this month. But he now says vaccine distribution would be after the November presidential election.

US President Donald Trump has returned to the Oval Office for the first time after his hospitalization for COVID-19, and was recovering steadily according to his doctor.
Trump's physician wrote in a memo on Wednesday that the president said he felt great.
It said that Trump's oxygen saturation and respiratory rate remain in normal range, and he hasn't had a fever for more than four days and was symptom-free for over 24 hours.
The memo also said the president's labs demonstrated detectable levels of antibodies in his blood on Monday, while antibodies were undetectable last Thursday.
White House officials said Trump was back working in the Oval Office on Wednesday.
Trump tweeted that he was just briefed on Hurricane Delta, and spoke with governors of Texas and Louisiana.
Local media are criticizing the president for leaving the living quarters and breaking isolation, saying that could put White House staff at a greater risk of infection.

Two Islamic State militants have appeared via video link in a US court to face charges for their alleged involvement in the killing of four Americans in Syria.
On Wednesday, Alexanda Kotey and El Shafee Elsheikh were indicted in connection with the hostage-taking and deaths of four Americans from 2012 to 2015. The two militants have been stripped of their British nationality.
The indictment was read out after the two men appeared on video at the hearing in a federal court in the state of Virginia.
It accuses the two of being "leading participants in the brutal hostage-taking scheme targeting American and European citizens."
It also alleges that the men were involved in ransom negotiations with the families of the hostages and posting videos of their captives.
The two are also accused of involvement in the killing of Japanese nationals. Goto Kenji and Yukawa Haruna were killed in 2015.
People around the world were shocked by the hostage-taking and killings by Islamic State militants and the videos of their activities.

Russia says it has successfully test-fired a hypersonic cruise missile that can travel at more than eight times the speed of sound.
The Russian Defense Ministry on Wednesday released footage of the Tsirkon missile launched from a naval vessel in the country's northwest toward a target in the Barents Sea. It shows the missile spewing flames and becoming invisible immediately after changing its direction.
The Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, General Valery Gerasimov, reported the test-launch to President Vladimir Putin by video link.
Gerasimov said the missile flew at an altitude of 28 kilometers, reaching hypersonic speeds of more than Mach 8.
He said it successfully hit the target about 450 kilometers away in about four-and-a-half minutes.
Putin praised the success of the test, saying it is a big event not only for the Russian armed forces, but also for the whole country.
The United States and China are also developing hypersonic weapons, which are said to be capable of penetrating existing missile defense systems.
Moscow apparently aimed to keep the US in check with the test, as Washington has been building a missile defense network on a global scale.

The Japanese government says it expects the country's crude steel output this year to be the lowest in about half a century, as the economy continues to feel the effects of the coronavirus.
The industry ministry says crude steel production in 2020 will be about 82 million tons, down 17.2 percent from last year.
The estimate is based on figures from January through September, plus projected demand for the remaining three months.
The total would be the lowest since 1969.
Japanese steelmakers shut down blast furnaces in the spring as the pandemic drove down demand.
But orders are slowly picking up, and Nippon Steel plans to restart one site near Tokyo next month.
JFE Steel also resumed operations at a furnace in western Japan last month, as demand from the auto industry rebounded.
But industry ministry officials warn it is too early to call it a recovery, and say demand will remain unstable for the duration of the pandemic.
