With one month to go before the US presidential election, a number of influential supporters of US President Donald Trump have come down with the coronavirus, overshadowing his reelection bid.

Trump was flown to a military hospital in the suburbs of Washington on Friday afternoon after testing positive for the virus. He is expected to carry on with his duties from the hospital.

He tweeted from the hospital, "Going well, I think! Thank you to all. LOVE!!!"

His doctor said the president is doing well and doesn't need supplemental oxygen. He added that Trump has been given the antiviral drug remdesivir and is resting comfortably.

Trump's campaign manager Bill Stepien and Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel have also tested positive for the virus. Furthermore, four attendees at a September 26 news conference where Trump announced his nominee for a Supreme Court Justice were later found to be infected with the virus. The four are Utah Senator Mike Lee, North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis, University of Notre Dame President John I. Jenkins and former presidential adviser Kellyanne Conway.

These developments are fueling concern that infections may be spreading in and around the White House.

Observers say it is inevitable that Trump's reelection bid as well as his administrative capability will be severely affected.

The White House says US President Donald Trump is being treated with an experimental drug after testing positive for the coronavirus.

Trump appeared before journalists at the White House on Friday evening about 17 hours after announcing his diagnosis.

The President was later airlifted to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. He will remain in the hospital for the next few days as a precaution and work from there.

A White House doctor said Trump had received an antibody drug being developed by US pharmaceutical firm Regeneron.

The company reported last month that the drug had proven to be effective in reducing the amount of the virus and improving symptoms during clinical trials.

The White House says Trump is "fatigued but in good spirits", while several media outlets report that he has a cough and fever.

The Korean Central News Agency said on Saturday that Kim offered his best wishes to Trump and first lady Melania Trump for a speedy recovery. The outlet said he expressed confidence that they will overcome the virus.

This is the first time Kim has sent a message to a foreign leader infected with the coronavirus.

News of President Donald Trump's coronavirus infection is already having an effect on the presidential election, which is only a month away.

Trump tested positive and was taken to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Friday. He will stay there for the next few days as a precautionary measure.

A campaign visit to the state of Florida was cancelled. Trump has continued to hold large-scale rallies even amid the pandemic, and was scheduled to visit the battleground states of Wisconsin and Arizona this month, though these trips will now be reviewed.

Democratic candidate Joe Biden announced on Friday that he had tested negative.

He says he plans to continue holding small meetings, while observing preventive measures against the virus.

According to Real Clear Politics, a website that tracks political polling, Biden had an average of 49.9 percent support across national polls as of Friday, while Trump was at 43.1 percent. Biden also leads Trump in many battleground states.

The two candidates faced off in a televised debate on Tuesday. The next one was scheduled for October 15. However, Trump's diagnosis has cast doubt on the practicality of this timeline.

The Trump administration has appealed a court decision to block the government from banning the Chinese-owned social media app WeChat.

The government filed an appeal with a federal appeals court on Friday.

The federal district court in San Francisco issued a preliminary injunction against the ban last month after WeChat users in the US filed a motion with the court.

The Trump administration had announced it would bar US app stores from offering WeChat or another Chinese-owned app, TikTok, for download. It claimed the Chinese government could misuse customer data collected by the apps.

The Trump administration is expected to appeal a similar preliminary injunction against a ban on TikTok downloads issued last month by the federal district court in Washington.

It remains to be seen whether the Trump administration will be able to submit sufficient evidence to the courts to defend its decision.

A UN treaty banning nuclear weapons may have enough ratifications as early as this month for it to go into effect. Delegates to a UN General Assembly meeting have expressed their government's intention or willingness to ratify the treaty.

Forty-six UN members have so far ratified the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. It will take effect 90 days after it gets 50 ratifications.

Leaders and ministers from more than 70 countries addressed a UN gathering on the elimination of nuclear weapons via video on Friday.

The foreign ministers of Algeria and Jamaica said their countries will ratify the treaty soon.

The foreign ministers of Liechtenstein, Indonesia and Peru spoke positively about ratifying the treaty.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed hope that the treaty will enter into force. He said it reflects the desire of a large number of states to get rid of the nuclear threat.

Colombia's Foreign Minister, Claudia Blum, paid tribute to Iwasa Mikiso, the former head of a Japanese association representing atomic bomb survivors, who died last month.

She said Iwasa dedicated his life to the pursuit of nuclear disarmament, and called on the international community to unite behind that idea.

NHK has learned that documents written by about 60,000 Japanese people who were interned in Siberia shortly after World War Two are kept in a state archive in Moscow.

Many praise the former Soviet Union. Experts say the Japanese internees were coerced into writing pro-Soviet comments to spread anti-US sentiment in Japan ahead of the impending Cold War.

The documents are believed to have been written between 1946 and 1950 when the internees were temporarily assembled at a camp in Nakhodka in Russia's Far East, and before their return to Japan.

The internees described their overall impression of life under internment.
Most praised the Soviet socialist system. Many said there was no ethnic discrimination, and that they had valuable experiences they would not forget.

The documents are believed to be part of the Soviet Union's attempt to impose the significance of socialism and anti-American ideology upon the Japanese.

Seikei University Professor Emeritus Tomita Takeshi says the former Soviet Union wanted to bring Japan on side during the Cold War. He says its main aim was to increase the pro-Soviet, pro-communist and anti-US population in Japan.

Armenia says it is ready to work with the United States, Russia and France to reach a resolution in the conflict over the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

The Armenian foreign ministry released a statement on Friday. But Azerbaijan remains adamant that it will reject any negotiations.

Fighting between the neighboring countries over the past week has claimed more than 180 lives.

The US, Russia and France are jointly calling for an immediate ceasefire.

Azerbaijan's presidential aide, Khikmet Gadzhiev, said on Friday that Armenia must withdraw its troops before negotiations can start.

The disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region lies in Azerbaijan. But since a 1994 ceasefire, it has been run by ethnic Armenians, who make up a majority of the territory's population.
