US President Donald Trump has said he has determined that it is time to officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
Trump made the announcement in a speech at the White House on Wednesday.
He also disclosed he had ordered the State Department to begin preparations for relocating the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
Israel has long claimed Jerusalem as its capital, but no country has recognized the claim.
Palestinians under Israeli rule also claim East Jerusalem as the capital of their future state.
Trump's decision is in line with his key campaign promise to move the US Embassy to Jerusalem.
But Trump in June signed a six-month waiver maintaining the embassy's current location, taking into consideration the impact the change in policy will have on the Middle East peace process.
Palestinians are calling for protests against Trump's decision, prompting the Israeli government to step up security in Jerusalem and elsewhere.
The US embassies in Israel and neighboring Jordan have called on Americans in the countries to exercise vigilance.
Protest rallies by Muslims are expected in Arab nations following Friday prayers.
Concern is rising that Trump's decision may destabilize the Middle East and trigger acts of terror and violence.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has strongly condemned the announcement by President Donald Trump that the United States recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
In a televised address, Abbas described the declaration as US withdrawal from the role of peace mediator.
He said the decision ignores the consensus of the international community and tramples on peace efforts. He called it an endorsement of Israel's occupation and settlement policy that violates international agreements.
Abbas also called Jerusalem the eternal capital of the State of Palestine.
He said Trump's recognition does not justify Israel's claim to Jerusalem and that Jerusalem is a city for Arabs, Christians, and Muslims.
The Palestine leader added he is considering countermeasures against Trump's decision.

Trump also ordered preparations to begin on relocating the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

US President Donald Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital has drawn criticism and raised concerns around the world.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he cannot understand what Trump is trying to do and that his decision will put the region in a "ring of fire."
Erdogan told a large crowd of supporters in Ankara on Thursday that political leaders should try to make peace rather than stir up conflict. He accused the US and Israel of violating UN Security Council resolutions.
President Joko Widodo of Indonesia, which has the world's largest Muslim population, said the decision can rock global security and stability.
Speaking at a news conference, he said a meeting next week of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation will be very important.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau criticized the decision without naming Trump. At a news conference in Guangzhou, southern China, Trudeau made it clear that Canada will not move its embassy from Tel Aviv.
In Tokyo, Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono said he's concerned that Trump's announcement could make things more difficult for Israeli-Palestinian peace and worsen the situation in the Middle East.
He said there is no change in Japan's position that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict should be settled through negotiations between the parties involved, based on UN Security Council resolutions.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said the international perception is that the issue of Jerusalem's final status will be resolved through dialogue.
He expressed China's support for an independent Palestinian state with its capital in East Jerusalem. Geng also said China calls on all countries to exhaust efforts for an early resumption of Israeli-Palestinian peace talks and to protect peace and stability of the region from a neutral and objective stand.

A senior UN official has met North Korea's foreign minister in Pyongyang, apparently to ease tension over the country's nuclear and missile development.
Jeffrey Feltman, the UN undersecretary-general for political affairs, met Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho on Thursday.
No details of the talks have been made available. But Feltman is believed to have called on the North to abide by UN Security Council resolutions against the North's nuclear and missile tests.
Ri appears to have repeated the country's argument that the missile and nuclear development is an act of self-defense against the US threat.
He is also believed to have criticized international sanctions on the country as unjust.
Earlier on Wednesday, North Korea's Foreign Ministry made clear its confrontational stance against the United States in a statement issued by a spokesperson.
It said that should the US light the fuse for a nuclear war, North Korea will surely make the US pay the consequences dearly through mighty nuclear force.
The Korean Workers' Party newspaper Rodong Sinmun on Thursday criticized the administration of US President Donald Trump, saying the US is instigating nuclear war.
Feltman is the first UN political chief to visit the North in 7 years. But whether his visit will help defuse tensions remains to be seen.

A survivor of the 1945 atomic bombing of Hiroshima has arrived in Oslo to attend the Nobel Peace Prize award ceremony.
This year's Nobel Peace Prize went to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, or ICAN, for its efforts leading to the adoption of a landmark UN treaty to ban nuclear arms.
Setsuko Thurlow, who now lives in Canada, is scheduled to give a speech at the ceremony along with other members of the group. She will be the first atomic bomb survivor to speak at a Nobel Peace Prize ceremony.
Thurlow arrived at the Norwegian capital on Wednesday. The 85-year-old said she will appeal for the abolition of nuclear weapons for the survival of mankind.
Thurlow's activities are widely believed to have contributed to the adoption of the treaty in July.
The world's nuclear powers, and countries like Japan that are under a nuclear umbrella, have not signed the UN treaty.
Thurlow has expressed hope of reaching out to those countries by recounting the devastating consequences of a nuclear attack in which she lost her family members including a young nephew.

Japanese electronics maker Sharp has returned to the First Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange after posting an operating profit.
Sharp's stock was moved to the less prestigious Second Section of the TSE in August last year after the company suffered massive losses.
But with help from one of Taiwan's largest electronics firms, the company has managed to rebuild and turn its business around.
Now the company's stock is listed again in the First Section after a 16-month absence.
President and CEO Tai Jeng-wu celebrated the company's achievement at the TSE.
Sharp's net loss had climbed to about 2.3 billion dollars during the business year through March 2016, falling into negative net worth.
But investment from Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Industry helped restore Sharp's business. The firm achieved an operating profit in the year through March 2017 for the first time in 3 years.
Sharp applied in June to return to the TSE's First Section.
Executives apparently hope that the comeback will make it easier to raise funds and signal that the company is once again on the path to expansion.

The Chief Executive Officer of Apple, Tim Cook, has defended his decision of pulling VPN, or virtual private network, services from its app stores in China.
He made the remarks at the Fortune Global Forum that opened on Wednesday in Guangzhou, southern China.
Cook has been criticized for bowing to pressure from Chinese cyber regulators and removed VPN services which help users subvert regulations on websites.
The CEO told the forum that he believes strongly in freedom as an American but each country has its own laws and regulations. He said he decided to enter the Chinese market as nothing ever changes from the sidelines.
Cook also expressed his hope that some of its apps removed from app stores in China will be reinstated.
Many Chinese business leaders expressed their optimism about the country's economic outlook.
Alibaba Group Chairman Jack Ma said there are people who criticize China for having a single political party.
But he said he is confident about the country's growth prospects because it benefits from political stability.
