The US government's special representative for North Korea policy has arrived in Japan for talks with officials about Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programs.
Joseph Yun from the US State Department gave an interview to NHK on Monday after arriving at Narita Airport outside Tokyo.
Yun said he will stay in Japan for a couple of days to meet with his local counterparts. He added he's looking forward to a good visit.
He made no mention of a US media report about the possibility of talks between the United States and the North.
The Washington Post reported last month that Yun had said if North Korea halts its nuclear and missile tests for 60 days, the US will resume direct dialogue with it.
Yun is scheduled to leave Japan on Wednesday for Thailand.
The US State Department said in a statement last week that the US looks forward to continuing its partnership with Japan and Thailand, so that North Korea will resume sincere discussions on denuclearization.

A Swedish research institute says that sales of South Korean-made arms in 2016 increased by 20 percent from the previous year.
The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute included the statistic in its annual report on the global arms trade, released Monday.
The report notes that sales by the world's 100 largest arms-producing and military services companies amounted to nearly 375 billion dollars. That's up 1.9 percent from a year earlier. The data excludes figures from China, which does not disclose such details.
The report says total sales for 7 South Korean companies on the list came to 8.4 billion dollars, up 20.6 percent.
Referring to the situation in North Korea, the report says the perception that Pyongyang poses a growing threat is driving South Korea's acquisitions of military equipment. It quotes an analyst as saying that South Korea is also aiming to become a major arms exporter.
The report says sales of arms made by US companies, including Lockheed Martin and Boeing, made up about 60 percent of the global total.
Five Japanese firms were on the list, but their combined sales fell by 6.4 percent.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called Israel a "terrorist state" that continues to occupy Palestinian territories.
Erdogan made the remark in an address on Sunday.
He also criticized US President Donald Trump's recent decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he is not used to receiving lectures about morality from a leader who helps Islamic fundamentalists in Palestine.
Shortly afterward, Turkey said in a statement that Israel should be held responsible for its occupation of Palestinian territories.
Observers say Turkey is apparently trying to lead discussions on how to deal with Trump's decision at an emergency meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, or OIC, on Wednesday. The country now chairs the 57-member organization.

The World Trade Organization opened a 4-day ministerial meeting in Buenos Aires on Sunday.
The focus is on whether the world trade body can achieve progress in setting rules for multilateral trade.
The United States is trying to place priority on bilateral deals under the "America first policy."
In an opening speech, WTO Director-General Roberto Azevedo called for a stronger multilateral trade system amid the rising threat of protectionism.
During the meeting, Japan is expected to lobby for new rules on e-commerce. Under trade and industry minister Hiroshige Seko, Japan also plans to meet US and EU officials to seek a breakthrough in the trade talks.
The WTO launched the Doha Round of trade liberalization talks in 2001, but negotiations have stalled due to divisions between rich and poor nations.
The United States is led by Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer. He will call for WTO institutional reform and market-based, fair trade policies.

Analysts are predicting that business sentiment at large Japanese manufacturing firms will show a 5th straight quarterly improvement in a forthcoming Bank of Japan report.
Fifteen private-sector institutions have come up with their projections for the BOJ Tankan report to be issued on Friday, covering about 11,000 businesses in Japan.
The quarterly survey measures how executives feel about the economy. The Tankan index represents the difference in the percentage of companies that say business is good and those that say it's bad. A positive reading means more companies are optimistic.
Analysts at all but one of the institutions predict a reading of positive 22 to 26 points for large manufacturers.
Twenty-two points were registered in the previous survey, the highest level in 10 years.
This time, analysts cited an increase in exports of parts for automobiles and smartphones due to the weaker yen amid the continuing recovery of the global economy.
Analysts also predict that the Tankan index for large non-manufacturers will either remain flat or show a minor improvement, within a range of 23 to 25 points.
All 15 institutions project that business sentiment at both large manufacturers and non-manufacturers will worsen. They cite concerns over North Korea and the handling of government affairs by US President Donald Trump.

The Japanese government has adopted counter-terrorism guidelines ahead of the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo.
A government task force adopted the guidelines on Monday.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga, who heads the task force, said the current situation surrounding international terrorism is extremely grave.
Suga said it's expected that many people will come to see the 2020 Games, and the government needs to do all it can to ensure their safety.
The guidelines call for establishing a center for sharing intelligence on international terrorism in mid-2018 to bolster intelligence gathering and analyses.
Eleven offices, including the National Police Agency and the Foreign Ministry, will share their intelligence at the center to be set up within the Cabinet Secretariat.
The government will help train surgeons to treat wounds caused by explosions or gunshots. They will set up a system to ensure that a large number of injured people receive medical treatment.
The government will also work with the private sector to conduct drills to prevent attacks against soft targets. This will include sports venues where many people gather but security is less stringent.
