The Japanese government has formally decided that Emperor Akihito's abdication will take place on April 30th, 2019. Crown Prince Naruhito's accession is set for May 1st.
Ministers approved at a Cabinet meeting on Friday morning an ordinance setting the date for the implementation of one-off legislation on the abdication.
Last week, the Imperial House Council chose the dates. The council members included Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, parliamentary leaders, Supreme Court justices and Imperial family members.
Emperor Akihito will be the first to abdicate in about 200 years, since Emperor Kokaku in the late Edo period.
No emperors have abdicated since the lifelong system was introduced in the Meiji period.
Starting in May 2019, the abdicated Emperor will be called "Joko" and his wife, Empress Michiko, "Jokogo."
The Crown Prince's younger brother, Prince Akishino, will become "Koshi," meaning that he is first in line to the throne.
The government is expected to set up a committee early next year to prepare for the abdication.
The committee is to be led by Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga. It will study how to conduct ceremonies and whether to make May 1st, 2019, a public holiday.
The government will also look into details concerning the name of the new era to replace the current name of "Heisei."

Japan has officially announced that it will equip its fighter aircraft with long-range cruise missiles.
Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera told reporters on Friday that Japan needs to enhance its defense capability in view of the increasingly severe security environment.
He said his ministry is looking at 3 types of missiles that can operate outside the range of enemy defense systems.
The Norwegian-made JSM, or Joint Strike Missile, has a range of 500 kilometers, and would be installed in F35A fighter jets. The US-made LRASM and JASSM have a range of 900 kilometers, and would be used with F15 fighters.
Onodera said the missiles will allow the Self-Defense Forces to effectively counter enemy aggression, while securing the safety of SDF personnel.
He said they will also be essential for protecting Japan's Aegis destroyers. These ships would be used to defend the country in the event of a missile attack by North Korea.
Onodera said the introduction of cruise missiles will not contradict Japan's defense-oriented security policy. He added that Japan will not attack other countries' military bases.
The Defense Ministry plans to request funds for the missiles in the budget for the fiscal year that begins in April.

The rescued crew members of a North Korean fishing boat have reportedly told the Japanese authorities that the Korean People's Army set a quota for their catch.
The wooden boat was spotted on November 28th near an uninhabited island off the town of Matsumae in Hokkaido, northern Japan.
A nameplate says the vessel belongs to the 854th unit of the Korean People's Army.
Sources say some of the 10 crew members told the Japan Coast Guard they belong to a fisheries association operated by the Korean People's Army and had been given a catch quota.
They are suspected of stealing items from buildings on the island. Investigators say that home appliances and a power generator were missing from the building used by a local fishing cooperative.
Police and Coast Guard officials will continue to question the crew to find out why they landed on the island.

Online retail giant Rakuten wants to help drones navigate safely at a low altitude in Japan, with an eye on future autonomous delivery service.
Rakuten officials said on Friday that they're launching an Unmanned Traffic Management platform to direct drone activity. The company has formed a joint venture with a US startup, AirMap.
The system will allow drone operators to confirm where flights are permitted, and communicate and share flight plans.
Rakuten AirMap CEO Hideaki Mukai says traffic control for drones is insufficient in Japan and no one knows where they are flying. He says the platform will become a core system in the future.
