The Japanese government has decided to add more entities to its sanctions list for North Korea, which is continuing its nuclear and missile development.

Cabinet ministers approved the decision to freeze the assets of an additional 19 organizations on Friday.

The new entities include shipping companies, trading firms and banks based in North Korea.

The asset freeze now covers a total of 103 organizations and 108 individuals.

The Foreign Ministry aims to step up the pressure on North Korea ahead of Friday's ministerial meeting of the UN Security Council. Foreign Minister Taro Kono will chair the meeting on North Korean issues.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said North Korea's missile launches indicate the need to increase the pressure on the North to change its policies. He added that the North has shown no intention of resolving the abduction issue, which is a top priority for the Abe administration.

Suga said Japan will continue to urge the North to take action to resolve various issues, including its nuclear and missile development and the abductions.

A US think tank says China has made substantial progress with construction on disputed islands in the South China Sea.

The Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative of the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington issued a report on Thursday.

It says China "completed the dredging and landfill operations for its seven new islands in the Spratlys by early 2016, and seems to have halted such operations to expand islets in the Paracels by mid-2017."

However, it says China is committed to the next phase: building the infrastructure needed for fully-functioning air and naval bases on the larger outposts.

The report says underground storage structures have been identified on Fiery Cross Reef, Subi Reef and Mischief Reef, and that they are likely intended to house ammunition or other important materials.

China has already built runways on these reefs.

The report also referred to what appear to be high-frequency radar systems and "elephant cage" antenna arrays at Fiery Cross Reef and Subi Reef. It says China is poised to substantially boost its radar and signals intelligence capabilities.

China released images of some of its fighters at Woody Island in the Paracel Islands in October, and the Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative spotted transport aircraft in November.

Myanmar's president says the country is making preparations for housing to ensure the return of Rohingya Muslims from neighboring Bangladesh, starting next February.
Htin Kyaw, who is on his first visit to Japan since taking office in March last year, spoke to NHK in Tokyo on Friday. He had never previously spoken directly to foreign media.
He pledged to ensure the safe return of the Rohingya, starting in February. The United Nations estimates that 600,000 people have fled their homes in the state of Rakhine to Bangladesh due to clashes between Myanmar government troops and Rohingya insurgents.
He said the rebuilding of houses is already under way in villages that had been burned down, including temporary housing.
Rohingya Muslims have been denied citizenship in predominantly Buddhist Myanmar.
The president cited regulations and said that whoever wants to become a citizen and whoever is qualified will become citizens.
The Japanese government plans to help build roads, power lines and other infrastructure in Rakhine.
Htin Kyaw said Japanese assistance is important and expressed his gratitude.
He has long served as a close aide to Myanmar's de facto leader, Aung San Suu Kyi.

The Bank of Japan's quarterly Tankan survey shows that companies are more upbeat about business conditions.

The Tankan index represents the difference in the percentage of companies that say business is good and those that say it's bad. A positive reading means more companies are optimistic.

BOJ economists surveyed some 11,000 firms from November to December.

The results show that among large manufacturers, the index stood at plus 25. That's up 3 points from the previous survey and the 5th straight rise, for the highest level in 11 years.

An increase in machinery production backed by growing investment in automobile and IT-related production facilities helped improve the reading. Strong exports also provided a boost.

The figure for major non-manufacturers came in at plus 23, unchanged from the last quarter.

The index for small businesses rose to its highest level in 26 years.

But managers have a dimmer view of the future. Many say rising material prices and a worker shortage will weigh on business conditions.

The president of the World Bank says the global economy will continue to grow steadily.

Jim Yong Kim made the remarks in an interview with NHK during a visit to Tokyo on Friday.

Kim said he anticipates growth of nearly 3 percent next year but he also expressed concern about the possible negative impact of the US and Europe scaling back monetary easing.

He pointed to the potential confusion in emerging economies stemming from capital outflows as US and European interest rates continue to rise.

Kim said that the central banks of Japan and western countries should implement monetary policy carefully, in consideration of the impact on emerging countries.

He also said that it is important for these banks to have good communication with markets.

Kim touched on Japan's economic situation.
He urged the Bank of Japan to carefully review the impact of its monetary policy.

He said that Japan could not see the kind of inflationary increase that was expected when the aggressive strategy was put in place.

Kim stressed that structural reforms should be accelerated to achieve sustainable growth and that leaders should take advantage of a relatively robust global economy.

Dozens of Muslims have protested in Tokyo against US President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Pakistanis and Indonesians were among about 50 people who gathered outside the US Embassy on Friday, raising placards and shouting slogans.

The protest was arranged by a Pakistani resident in Tokyo, Raees Siddiqui. He suggested that Trump's decision poses a threat to peace. He said he called on his friends in Japan to rise up.

Israel maintains that Jerusalem is its permanent and indivisible capital. But the international community does not recognize that position, as Jerusalem is a holy city for Jews, Christians and Muslims alike.

The Palestinian Authority says East Jerusalem is the capital of an independent Palestinian state.

On December 6th, Trump announced that the United States officially recognizes Jerusalem as Israel's capital and will move its embassy there from Tel Aviv.

The decision has drawn global criticism, including from the United Nations, the European Union and the Pope.

Japanese researchers say they have developed a type of glass that can be repaired without heating.

The University of Tokyo group is led by Professor Takuzo Aida.

The researchers had been working on new adhesives. A graduate school student, Yu Yanagisawa, accidentally discovered that a low molecular weight polymer, polyether thiourea, has a self-healing function.

Glass made from the material can be repaired by pressing the broken parts together for dozens of seconds.

The researchers say they confirmed that the glass regained its original strength after several hours.

Self-healing rubber has already been developed, but this is said to be the first hard substance that can be repaired at room temperature.

Yanagisawa says he was uncertain about his discovery at first, and repeatedly conducted experiments after receiving many comments about his work. He says he will be happy if the glass can be used as an eco-friendly material.
