Gunmen killed at least 24 people, including military personnel and civilians, in an attack on a military parade in the southwestern Iranian city of Ahvaz on Saturday. 53 others were injured.

Iran's state media say the gunmen targeted spectators and honored guests at the parade in the capital of Khuzestan Province.

Local media quote provincial government officials as saying the dead include members of the country's elite Revolutionary Guards, as well as civilians.

Security authorities say there were 4 gunmen. 3 were shot dead, and the fourth was detained. Officials are investigating the attack as a possible act of terrorism.

The annual parade commemorates the start of Iran's 1980-88 war with Iraq. Similar parades were held in several cities, including the capital, Tehran.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif wrote on Twitter, "Terrorists recruited, trained, armed and paid by a foreign regime have targeted Ahvaz."

He also pledged that Iran will "respond swiftly and decisively in defense of Iranian lives."

In June of last year, the parliament building in Tehran and the mausoleum of Iranian revolutionary leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini were targeted in terrorist attacks. Members of the Islamic State militant group claimed responsibility.

A US newspaper has reported that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein suggested removing President Donald Trump from office by invoking the 25th Amendment to the Constitution.

The New York Times reported in its Friday online edition that Rosenstein made the suggestion to other Justice Department and FBI officials in the spring of 2017. The paper cited sources close to the matter.

The 25th Amendment stipulates that if the vice president and a majority of cabinet officials declared to Congress that the president is "unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office," the vice president assumes those powers and duties as acting president.

The newspaper reports that Rosenstein also suggested secretly recording Trump in the White House to expose the chaos consuming the administration.

The suggestions came at a time when Trump fired James Comey as FBI director over probes into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election. Rosenstein was reportedly critical of the dismissal.

Rosenstein issued a statement to deny the allegations reported by the Times.

Trump told a campaign rally in Missouri on Friday that the Justice Department has "great people" but also "some real bad ones." He added, "There's a lingering stench and we're going to get rid of that."

The General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency has unanimously adopted a resolution urging North Korea to take substantial actions toward denuclearization.

The IAEA adopted the resolution on Friday, the final day of the conference held in Vienna, Austria with 153 countries attending, including delegates from Japan.

The resolution said it is extremely regrettable that there were signs of North Korea operating part of its nuclear facility at Nyongbyon before and after the North-South summit in April this year.

It strongly urges the North to take tangible actions for a complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization.

The resolution also stresses the active support of all countries for the resumption of IAEA inspections of nuclear facilities in North Korea.

After adopting the resolution, Japanese Ambassador Mitsuru Kitano said verification by the IAEA would be indispensable in achieving the denuclearization of North Korea.

The US representative stressed that progress in the denuclearization of North Korea must be accurately assessed based on verifiable steps.

The South Korean representative expressed hope for more talks between the US and North Korea at an early date. He referred to US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's proposal for US-North Korea talks in Vienna, and voiced hope that it will mark the beginning of serious negotiations for complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

Optimism about the possibility of a second US-North Korea summit has recently grown, but comments from US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo suggest he's keen to temper the mood with a dose of reality.

Speaking to Fox News on Friday, he said there's still much work to be done before we see US President Donald Trump sit down again with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

He also said he hopes to visit Pyongyang again soon to pave the way for a productive summit. But... he didn't forget to reiterate that sanctions remain in place until Pyongyang gives up its nuclear weapons.

At a summit earlier this week, the leaders of North and South Korea signed the Pyongyang Declaration. It says the North agrees to shut down a missile test site in front of international experts, and also dismantle a nuclear facility if the US takes reciprocal steps.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in is set to meet Trump in New York on Monday to brief him on the talks, as well as convey a message from Kim.

The United Nations Secretary-General has stressed the importance of multilateralism as he paid tribute to the late former UN chief, Kofi Annan.

Antonio Guterres spoke at a memorial ceremony for Annan on Friday at the UN General Assembly in New York. Annan died last month.

Guterres' predecessor, Ban Ki-moon, and representatives of most of the UN's 193 member nations also attended.

Guterres described Annan as "uncommonly warm, accessible, and of the people." He said Annan was a committed multilateralist and a believer in a rules-based global order.

Speaking with reporters on Thursday, Gutteres was asked whether he saw US President Donald Trump as a threat to multilateralism.

Without singling out a specific country, he said multilateralism has been under fire.

Delegates from all UN member nations will gather in New York next week to attend the UN General Assembly and other meetings. Leaders of more than 120 countries are expected to join.

Guterres is expected to use the meetings to call for greater understanding of UN activities.

A ceremony was held at Hong Kong's newly-built West Kowloon station on Saturday ahead of the planned opening of a high speed railway linking the city and Guangzhou in southern China.

The 142-kilometer railway will open on Sunday, allowing passengers to travel between West Kowloon station in Hong Kong and Guangzhou South station in 47 minutes. There will be trains that continue on, linking Hong Kong with 44 Chinese cities, including Beijing and Shanghai.

Chief Executive Carrie Lam was among the Hong Kong government officials who attended the ceremony.

Lam said the railway will not only promote economic and cultural cooperation within the region, but will also strengthen ties with Beijing. She said that will create opportunities for cities to cooperate and develop.
Lam then headed to Guangzhou on a special train with Chinese officials.

Immigration control for travelers going to the mainland has been established in Hong Kong, which had not been previously allowed under the "one country, two systems" principle.

Customs officials and police sent from the central government will work there under the jurisdiction of mainland law.

A group opposing the move held a rally near the ceremony, saying Hong Kong's rule of law is being threatened.

A participant said Beijing has quickly increased its influence in Hong Kong over the last few years, and that he worries that in the future its intervention will expand.

A festival of animated films from Japan has opened in the US city of Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles Anime Film Festival is sponsored in part by the Japan External Trade Organization. The organizers say the annual event, launched last year, is North America's biggest film festival featuring Japanese animations.

On Friday, the opening day, voice actors popular in the US appeared on the red carpet, smiling and waving to fans.

The festival will showcase more than 20 titles, including the smash hit Japanese anime "your name.," directed by Makoto Shinkai.

It will also screen some of the works of Oscar-nominated director Isao Takahata, who died in April.
One of them, 1988's "Grave of the Fireflies," won the top prize at the Moscow International Film Festival for Children and Young People.

The organizers are expecting about 1,800 filmgoers to attend the 3-day event.

The co-director of the festival said US fans appreciate Japanese animated films for their refined techniques and skillful plot developments. She also expressed hope that the festival will attract more fans from around the world to Japanese anime.
