The United Nation's human rights body has urged Myanmar's government to cooperate in an investigation into the suspected persecution of Rohingya Muslims.

The UN Human Rights Council made the call in a resolution adopted at a meeting on Thursday in Geneva.

The council previously set up a fact-finding mission to probe the alleged persecution of the ethnic minority but Myanmar's government refused to allow the mission to enter the country.

The latest resolution calls on Myanmar to accept the mission without any restrictions and cooperate with its investigation. It says a new independent body will be created to help find the truth.

The resolution points out the urgent need to hold responsible all those involved in what could amount to genocide, and to try them at the International Criminal Court. The court has already begun a preliminary investigation.

Japan abstained from the vote on the resolution, saying that Myanmar itself should conduct a reliable probe and take necessary measures, in cooperation with the international community.

Japan and China have agreed to increase efforts toward a productive visit to China in October by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono and his counterpart, Wang Yi, met at the UN headquarters in New York on Thursday. It was their 4th meeting this year.

Wang said relations need be handled with a steady and long-term vision.

Kono told Wang that Prime Minister Abe wants to discuss further steps to promote relations.

They agreed to coordinate efforts for tangible results during Abe's visit, including private sector cooperation in third-party countries. The topic is already being discussed.

North Korea was also on the agenda. The ministers agreed that full implementation of sanctions based on UN Security Council resolutions is needed to achieve the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

Kono called for China's cooperation to prevent the North from receiving goods via ship-to-ship transfer in waters near China.

Wang said that his country will crack down on such conduct.

Japan's Defense Ministry says the Air Self-Defense Force carried out a joint training exercise with the US Air Force on Thursday over the East China Sea and the Sea of Japan.

According to the announcement made on Friday, 16 Japanese fighter planes, mostly F-15s, joined a US B-52 bomber in the drill.

Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera told reporters the exercise was aimed at boosting the deterrence and response capacity of the Japan-US alliance.

He added that strengthening Japan-US cooperation is an effective way to demonstrate Japan's resolve and high capabilities to stabilize the region at a time when the security environment is becoming increasingly severe.

Similar joint air drills over the East China Sea have been held before, but this is the first time the Defense Ministry has made an announcement about them.

Observers say the move is apparently aimed at China, which has increased its activities in the region.

Typhoon Trami is expected to approach Japan's southwestern islands on Saturday without losing strength. Please click on the image to watch our meteorologist explain more.

The Meteorological Agency says the very strong storm was 230 kilometers southeast of Miyako Island in Okinawa Prefecture at 7 PM on Friday. Trami is slowly moving northwest.

It has a central atmospheric pressure of 950 hectopascals and is packing winds of up to 162 kilometers per hour near its center.

It's forecast to approach Okinawa and the Amami Islands in Kagoshima Prefecture on Saturday.

People in Okinawa and Amami can expect heavy rain, violent winds, rough seas and high waves.

Weather officials say that through Saturday the maximum instantaneous wind speed in Okinawa and Amami could reach up to 250 kilometers per hour. That's equivalent to the speed of a Shinkansen bullet train.

Experts at the Japan Association for Wind Engineering say in that wind speed, outdoor activities are extremely dangerous. Old buildings could collapse, and even steel-framed structures could warp. Electrical utility poles and concrete walls could fall, and a truck driving down the road could overturn.

Trami is predicted to change course to the northeast and get very close to western parts of Japan's main islands around Sunday and eastern and northern Japan later.

Weather officials are calling on people across Japan to stay alert for heavy rain, strong winds and rough seas through Monday.

As of 5:30 PM on Friday, airlines had canceled 266 domestic flights for Friday, mainly to and from Okinawa's Naha Airport, and 382 flights for Saturday.

Japan's transport ministry has instructed airport operators across the country to ensure safety in light of the approaching typhoon.

Measures for this include flood prevention for power-supply systems and stockpiling of food and blankets in the case an airport becomes isolated. The ministry says the operators should also be prepared to offer mobile phone charging services.

Earlier this month, Kansai International Airport was forced to close after a runway and a terminal building were flooded when Typhoon Jebi ripped through western Japan.

Traffic to the airport was paralyzed after a tanker crashed into the bridge linking the airport to the mainland in Osaka and damaged it.

A Japanese district court has rejected a residents' request to stop the restart of a nuclear reactor in the country's west.

Residents who filed for an injunction to block the restart of the Number 3 reactor at Ikata nuclear power plant expressed disappointment to Friday's court decision.

The residents' lawer, Hiroyuki Kawai said, "This is a particularly bad decision. The worst of its kind. The court is just doing what the nuclear power supporters say."

The reactor in Ehime Prefecture shut down last October for regular inspections and was being kept offline by another injunction issued by a separate court. But that injunction was lifted on Tuesday.

Opponents to the restart cited the risk of a serious accident, pointing to a nearby volcano and the possibility of a major earthquake.

The judge on Friday said the reactor meets nuclear regulations and poses no life-threatening dangers.

The two court decisions this week paved the way for Shikoku Electric Power Company to bring the reactor back online next month.

Japan's cargo spacecraft Kounotori 7 has docked with the International Space Station.

The unmanned spacecraft was captured by a robotic arm of the ISS, which is orbiting 400 kilometers above Earth, around 11:35 Thursday UTC.

The craft had been launched on an H2B rocket from the Tanegashima Space Center in Kagoshima Prefecture, southwestern Japan, on Sunday local time.

The docking was completed at 18:08 Thursday UTC, about 2 hours ahead of schedule.

The craft was loaded with about 6.2 tons of cargo, including experimental equipment, Japanese lithium-ion cells for the station's main batteries, and daily supplies for astronauts.

The cargo also contains a Japanese-made reentry capsule that's about 80 centimeters in diameter. Japan's space agency JAXA plans to demonstrate the capsule's reentry capability in November by having it bring back samples from tests conducted at the ISS.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government will begin using paper straws on a trial basis from October to help reduce the amount of plastic waste.

The paper straws will be provided at 3 cafeterias at the Tokyo government building in the capital's Shinjuku district.

Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike visited one of the cafeterias on Friday. She says she hopes the use of paper straws will encourage people to think about environmental issues.

The Tokyo government will purchase 20,000 paper straws, which are several times more expensive than plastic ones.

Officials will conduct a survey on paper straw usage and will also draw up measures to cut plastic waste.

Some city councils in the United States have banned plastic straws. A number of Japanese restaurant chains are planning to phase them out.
