Authorities in Mauritius said that the Japanese-owned bulk carrier which ran aground has now split in two.
Officials of the Indian Ocean island nation stated that the Wakashio broke apart at around 4:30 p.m. on Saturday local time.
Video footage taken by local media shows turbid and brown water around the split ship, in clear contrast with the surrounding blue water. Leakage of the oil remaining in the ship is feared.
Officials say they have sent the coast guard to the area and are preparing to tow the ship with the advice of maritime experts.
The Wakashio struck a reef in late July on its way from China to Brazil.
The Mauritian government said in a statement on Friday that it seeks compensation from the vessel's owner and an insurance company. It also calls for individuals and organizations to submit documents to show the extent of the damage.

The operator of the Japanese-owned bulk carrier that ran aground off Mauritius in late July has confirmed that the vessel has split in two.
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines said it confirmed at 2 p.m. on Saturday, local time, that the Wakashio had broken apart.
The firm said nearly all the 3,000 tons of bunker oil remaining onboard had already been recovered. It also said most of the estimated 100 tons of lubricant oil and residual oil onboard had been collected by Friday, but some oil is believed to have leaked out as the vessel split.
It explained that an oil fence has been installed around the ship to prevent the oil from reaching the shore, and the spilled oil is being collected.
The firm also said it believes about 1,000 tons of oil leaked into the sea, and only around half of it has been recovered so far.
The operator said it will continue to work with the authorities of Mauritius and Japan to resolve the situation together with the owner of the ship.
The owner, Nagashiki Shipping, said it will interview the crew after the authorities question them, to help determine the cause of the incident.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that coronavirus infections have reached their peak in his country and he is removing almost all restrictions on economic activities.
He said in a speech on Saturday that over the last three weeks, the number of new confirmed cases has dropped from over 12,000 a day to an average of around 5,000 a day.
He said that there are signs of hope and that South Africa has moved beyond the peak of the curve.
Ramaphosa said that the ban on travel between provinces will be lifted and that the ban on sales of tobacco and alcohol will also be lifted.
But he said restrictions on international travel remain in place.
Despite the easing of restrictions, Ramaphosa urged greater vigilance as the risk of infection remains.
He called on people to continue to wear face masks and to practice social distancing.
The overall number of infection cases in South Africa is above 570,000, which is more than half of the total cases on the African continent. It is the fifth highest number in the world, but the rate of increase has slowed recently.

The South Korean government says the daily number of new cases of the coronavirus in the country soared to 279 on Saturday, the highest in about five months.
Health officials announced the tally on Sunday morning.
The tally topped 100 for the third straight day. It was the first time since early March that the figure surpassed 250.
Officials say the capital Seoul and the surrounding province of Gyeonggi accounted for more than 80 percent of the new infections. Clusters linked to churches were reported in the capital.
President Moon Jae-in wrote on his Facebook page that the government will do its utmost to overcome the difficulties. He indicated that the country is at another crucial stage, after the spread of the virus peaked at the end of February.
The government is urging people in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province not to hold indoor gatherings of 50 or more people.

South Korean military sources say the country and the United States will launch a joint exercise on Tuesday, two days behind schedule due to the coronavirus.
The drill, which is expected to focus on computer-simulated command post training, was originally scheduled to start on Sunday and last until August 28.
South Korea's Yonhap News Agency says the adjustment came as a South Korean Army officer who was supposed to take part in the exercise tested positive for the virus on Friday.
The agency also reports that about 70 military members who were found to have come into close contact with the officer have tested negative.
Five-hundred other officials are also undergoing tests. Yonhap says the starting date may be pushed back further.
The US and South Korea normally hold joint military exercises in spring and summer based on a scenario of an emergency breaking out on the Korean Peninsula. This year, the springtime exercise was called off due to the virus.
The two countries decided to go ahead with the summertime exercise on a greatly scaled-back manner, as the pandemic has made it difficult for US troops based on the US mainland and in Japan to participate.
The upcoming exercise is likely to draw protests from North Korea, which has repeatedly criticized the drills.

The US Postal Service is warning that millions of voters could be disenfranchised, as their mail-in ballots might not be delivered in time for the presidential election in November.
The postal service included the warning in letters it sent to election officials in many states in late July.
The warnings come as a surge in the number of mail-in ballots for the election is expected due to the continued spread of the coronavirus.
The letters say that certain deadlines for requesting and sending mail-in ballots set by states' election laws are incongruous with the postal service's delivery standard.
They say this mismatch creates a risk that ballots sent by mail will not arrive in time to be counted.
The postal service has been reducing overtime work hours and the number of mail sorting machines as part of measures to cut its huge financial deficit.
US media say vote-counting in the election could be delayed, causing confusion.
The Democrats are calling for an emergency budget of 25 billion dollars to support the postal service and promote mail-in voting.
But US President Donald Trump opposes such funding, arguing that an increase in mail-in ballots could lead to more fraudulent votes.

China's annual ban on fishing in parts of the East China Sea, including waters off the Senkaku Islands, is set to be lifted on Sunday.
China prohibits fishing in parts of the East and South China seas from May to protect marine resources.
On Saturday, fishermen at a port in the southern province of Fujian were preparing to head out to sea. Some told NHK they've been instructed by the authorities to stay away from the Senkaku Islands.
Attention is focused on whether the Chinese government might keep the fishing boats under control this time to avoid friction with Japan.
Four years ago, about 200 to 300 Chinese fishing boats navigated in waters near the islands. Tension rose when some of the boats entered Japanese territorial waters, along with Chinese government ships.
Japan controls the islands. China and Taiwan claim them. The Japanese government maintains that the islands are an inherent part of Japan's territory, in terms of history and international law. It says there is no issue of sovereignty to be resolved over them.

Japanese astronaut Noguchi Soichi is among the four-member crew that will travel to the International Space Station for a six-month science mission.
The Crew Dragon was developed by the US firm SpaceX. Once certified, it will regularly shuttle astronauts to and from the space station. The project has become a symbol of the commercial foray into space.
NASA says it's now reviewing data following a test flight that was completed early this month.
The flight of the second Crew Dragon is scheduled for next spring. Another Japanese astronaut, Hoshide Akihiko, is due to join that mission.

Many summer vacationers in Japan are enjoying "glamping," as luxurious camping experiences allow them to maintain social distancing from others.
"Glamping," which combines the words "glamorous" and "camping," involves comfortable stays in facilities furnished with beds and other amenities, while being surrounded by a rich natural environment.
A glamping site in the city of Miyazu in northern Kyoto has been attracting many campers recently. The site offers large tents and private open-air baths.
On Sunday, one family was seen playing in a pool reserved for their private use. Other campers were catching insects.
The operator of the site says its eight glamping sites in Kyoto and neighboring Shiga Prefecture are fully booked this month. It says its earnings have gone up compared with previous years.
A company official says they have been receiving more inquires than earlier this year, as more families are visiting their glamping sites amid the coronavirus outbreak.
She says she thinks glamping is gaining popularity as it allows people to rent space for private use and not come into contact with other campers.
